Simply A Masterpiece
Let's be realistic.
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
The visuals and the feel of the setting was pleasing, but i wasn't taken at all with the acting and some aspects of the story were too heavy-handed. it is compulsively entertaining and fun to watch, but nothing more than that: no complex dialogues, no layered characters, no subtexts. it shoots for an epics but ultimately succeeds only in being a mediocre adaptation of a mediocre hist-fic novel, which i do recommend for a bit of mindless fun; just make sure to turn your critic button off in advance.
What was that? This story must have been written by a 10 year old. Or worse. A 10 year old would know how to write a better script than this rambling nonsense. It started mediocre but three quarters through it i was praying for it to end hastily, it was so excruciatingly painful to watch this mind-numbing farce. I pity the few good actors who willingly defecated on their career by being accepting the roles. The voice-over was horrible. as was everything else.
My wife and I watched this movie at home on DVD from our public library. Even though it was made in 2014 its release was delayed a few years because of marketing and tax issues. In the 17th century in the Netherlands was a real tulip mania, where artificially inflated sums were being paid for this exotic new flower, the the white ones with red stripes were particularly coveted, said to be the work of God.Born into all this was Alicia Vikander as Sophia Sandvoort. She and her siblings ended up in an orphanage and at 17 she was selected to be the bride of an older man, a merchant, who needed a male heir. There was no real attraction between them and things changed when he hired a young painter to do their portrait. And they began to speculate in the tulip market. (Reminds me of Bitcoin today.)The story gets very complicated but for me held my interest the whole way. It has a sort of "Shakespeare in Love" sensibility to it, a drama with frequent comedy thrown in, often just the way characters react to certain situations. For realism the film is often rather darkly lit, which I understand, they had no electricity back then, but still I would have enjoyed it more had it been a bit more brightly lit.
(Flash Review)Would you rather invest in Bitcoins or Tulips? Well in In 17th Century Amsterdam, Tulips were as profitable and erratic as the stock market. That fascinating story is the backbone for a complicated love story. An older and wealthy merchant forcibly marries or buys a beautiful and youthful orphaned girl with the main goal of birthing a child for him. Later, he hires a youthful painter chap to paint their portrait. Of course a romance ensues between the two youths, yet the painter needs more money for his plan to secretly start a new life with the girl so his invests in tulips. A convoluted plan is hatched to earn money fast to start their life. How will things shake out? With many dramatic story lines, surprisingly the film felt flat. The characters weren't likable, no surprise from their actions, thus were unengaging. The various plans seemed partially unbelievable and there was of course a double cross mixed in. It had nice production quality and great cinematography. Overall, it's a fairly unique story, has great actors yet failed to enthrall.
