A Masterpiece!
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
The effects were fairly decent. The vampires were alright. The acting and situations were pretty atrocious and cringe worthy. I'm not surprised at all that the main character (the old man) was also one of the writers. His character was so unbelievable (in the bad way) and I'm quite sure he wrote that character to make himself look good and made it extra super duper bada**/cool on purpose. This movie really tried to get me to take it seriously but it fell so short.
People are turning into grotesque vamps. The remaining humanity survive in isolated communities or even as rumored cannibals. Mister (Nick Damici) is able to save young Martin (Connor Paolo) when his family is attacked by vamps. They are driving north. On the way, they rescue a nun Sister (Kelly McGillis) being hunted by two rapists. They are then captured by a dangerous religious cult leader Jebedia Loven. Mister and Martin escape leaving Sister behind. They continue north and take on pregnant Belle (Danielle Harris) and former marine Willie. This is well-made considering its low budget. Director Jim Mickle concentrates on a dirty ugly dystopia. The characters are simple and well-drawn. It's not breaking new grounds but it's got good grit. There are also some good actors and familiar faces. It's dirty and harsh. The long rambling road trip may actually fit better as a TV show.
Very Low Budget and Surprisingly Atmospheric and Poetic, this is a Somewhat Different Take on the Vampire-Zombie-Post Apocalyptic Genre that has Seen its Share and it is Refreshing that this is Not More of the Same. Sure it is the Same in Parts but is Crafted in a Stylish New Way with its Gloom and Doom Rendered with a Soft Musical Score and Beautiful Cinematography. The Movie has a Soft Bite but is Hardly Soft. There is A Lot of Expected Kills and Bloodletting but these are Punctuations Solidifying the Heartfelt Story of Survival, Bonding, Family and Terror. Religious Undertones are Present but Not Driven by Any Hammering. Just, Once Again, a Soft Sell. This is One of the Better Entries in the Overloaded Genre and Manages to be Apart from the Saturated Gore of Most. It Doesn't Put these Creatures In Your Face at Every Turn but are a Menacing Threat Throughout. It is Director Jim Mickle's Steady and Symphonic Hand Here that Makes this an Underrated and Overlooked Horror that has been Drowned in the Deluge of Vampires, Zombies, and Post Apocalyptic Movies. This is Simply...One that's Worth a Watch for Fans of the Genre and those that are Usually Not Willing to Take a Chance Among So Many of These Types that are Out There.
I want to say upfront that I'm not a great fan of the latest post-apocalyptic movies, 'cause they all are so much the same and therefore, just boring. And movies about zombies and vampires are definitely off my list, for the same reason (although I'm a big fan of Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Walking Dead). This movie was recommended to me by a friend of mine, and almost reluctantly, I started watching it about two hours ago. And it is just great. I mean, really. I don't know why it got only 6,6 points on IMDb, because it's definitely worth watching. Of course, if you are looking for some hot looking main characters slaughtering hundreds of vampires - forget it, wrong address. But if you are into a post-apocalyptic movie with supernatural monsters which gives you a sense of reality, twisted, but still reality - go for it. And I found the acting brilliant.
