It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
Visually f*gly mediocrity that makes a crucial mistake of lying to the viewer. It's one thing to intelligently (and fairly) manipulate the viewer into throwing suspicion on the wrong characters, but it's an entirely different matter when deceptive plot-devices are used which in hindsight make zero sense. The guy we're supposed to think is possessed (but isn't) behaves in a way that eludes all logic: he kills a cop for no reason, and then goes into a store as if to rob it and kill everyone in it. That's just DUMB. Just because he's an a-hole and because his tongue is cut out we're supposed to accept his totally irrational behaviour - which fits like a glove to what one would expect a demon? This is the sort of nonsense that clueless, non-talent writers come up with. The cast is weak too, a bunch of boring and bland mediocrities.
I expected this movie to be a stereotypical jump scare movie, however I was pleasantly surprised with the character development and the twist at the end. Overall very entertaining
Out of sheer boredom I started watching this movie with little expectations and had no idea what to expect. Personally I find the critiques on this movie to be a little harsh. After viewing it I was pleasantly surprised and wanted to watch more movies and even investigated the main character's actor to find out more. The premise of the movie, once you get into it, is simple enough to understand. A murder in a house has taken place several years ago and some ghost hunters want to investigate. The main character, John, has visions of his mother in the house and his girlfriend invites him to join her crew to go to the haunted house to find answers. The movie changes between a police investigate, one that takes place several hours after John and his friends go into the house as well as the events that happened while him and the others were in there. One of those "a few hours before" type of movies.I was actually very convinced by Dustin Milligan's (John's) acting in this movie. As someone very familiar with haunted houses, ghost investigates and similar paranormal experiences I thought his acting was believable and scary enough and certainly carried my interest in the film. As far as the movie goes he was the star I can assure you.The rest of the movie I have to say was simply 'okay'. Toss in some weird history, strange symbols, a random bird dying to make it all spooky. Then of course the obligatory "everyone goes crazy and someone kills everyone else". The ending of the movie was definitely lackluster, it gives the viewers a plot twist we've seen a million times now and likely already anticipated and, if like me you liked the main character, probably didn't want. As a result the movie was simply 'okay' when compared to others but given the premise of the movie I didn't anticipate to enjoy it as much as I did. It failed at every opportunity to actually scare me BUT I found myself wanting to see more movies with similar main characters and simply for Milligan's performance, compared to all the other actors, I'd say the movie is worth watching. It's certainly not the most fancy, nail biting, gut-wrenching movie I've ever seen but it was worth the watch.
This is exactly the kind of film where most of the time they really don't pull it off very well. There are literally a MILLION ways to screw up a movie like this (and they usually do...) But with this film, I can say quite honestly, especially towards the end, that I was really caught up in it and found it very gripping and entertaining.I don't know WHAT the hell is up with the reviews here for this movie being wildly all over the place, from gushing '10's to 1 star 'This is typical crap found footage stuff' Well, in my lowly and wretched opinion, I truly felt that this film was very good. I think what really made this movie is how effective the ending was. To me, the strongest element of this film was the editing and the excellent way they went back and forth between when the group was in the house and during the police investigation right afterward. It nicely built up a very real tension and suspense as the story was entering it's final act.Seriously, this kind of film USUALLY is a low budget affair that has really poor acting and isn't put together very well. But, this one, although starting off rather slowly and in a somewhat average way, builds to what I feel is a very strong and effective finish. Just before watching this movie, I tried to watch another Supernatural Thriller called 'A HAUNTING AT SILVER FALLS' (2013) and was it ever BAD! Amateur all the way. Many usually are. This one was quite a bit better than most others of it's type. The acting wasn't anything stellar, but it was solid and THANKFULLY not overdone and mind-numbingly STUPID like it usually is with films like this. And, NO... this is most definitely NOT just another boring 'Found Footage' film. I don't even like most of those and I am NOT a fan of them per se. YES, there are BRIEF elements where the footage is shown concerning some of the things that happened while the group was in the house, but OVERALL it plays like a straight forward Supernatural Thriller. And, although James Wan did not direct this film, I think that you could definitely feel his fingerprints all over it. Especially in the 3rd act of the movie. Not giving anything away of course, but the way the momentum builds towards the end while the final Mystery is being revealed was somewhat similar to the way 'DEAD SILENCE' was done. In my opinion, very dramatic and effective. With Supernatural Thrillers particularly, I feel that it is EXTREMELY vital to put them together in such a way where they somehow suspend your disbelief and REALLY put you right there in the middle of what is happening. And, in order to do that, you REALLY have to know what you are doing to be able to craft the story in a way that will actually be effective. This one is not amazingly groundbreaking or anything, but if you do like these types of Supernatural Thrillers (it seems like there are THOUSANDS of them out there!) this movie is better than most because it is put together in a way that makes it more entertaining and effective than most...
