I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

I know this is a bit late in the review category, but I thought it was worth saying that this was a fun and sometimes monster-movie scary. It's not jump out of your seat scary, but I felt monster-movie dread anticipating what's to come as monster(s) begin wreaking havoc. I thought Jack Brooks was hilarious, understandable, and real. He is someone I would like to know and the hilarity comes from his Happy Gilmore reactions to every day annoyances from unresolved issues. His character is believable in crazy, surreal circumstances and it was entertaining throughout. My favorite movies are those with characters for whom I am rooting whatever the story or how it's told, no matter their flaws or good-guy, bad-guy personas as developed(much like Ash's), and the character's humor when well written/played. I felt Jack Brooks fit this bill to a T. Loved him!Don't look for an Evil Dead comparable; let go of pretense and limited expectations and just enjoy. This was, in my opinion, how we all first came to know and love Evil Dead movies to begin with, and how Ash and his exploits continue to entertain to this day...

How difficult can it really be to make a horror movie? "Ah, but that is why so many bad horror movies are made", you say, "because everyone thinks it will be easy." Well plot-wise, it has to be easy. Where most horror fails is not in the plot, the make-up, or even the casting because you can get away with inexperienced actors if you give them something to do. You cannot scare or horrify people with mountains of dialog. Don't tell me the history of the evil, show me. Don't explain the nature of the evil in tedious detail, show me. Or better yet, don't explain anything and just keep horrible things happening. Don't give inexperienced actors pages and pages of dialog, just keep them moving, running, screaming, chopping, crying, dying; anything except talking. JBMS spends far too much of the movie developing a complicated back story about rage and shame that has squat to do with the ending. Oh but the ending was good, if only it had started earlier in the movie.

After witnessing the brutal murder of his family as a child, Jack Brooks has grown up to be one messed up cat. Jack has some anger issues and the therapy sessions don't help at all. When Jack's Night School Professor unleashes an ancient curse, he is forced to confront some old demons and save the day.The films greatest strength are those fabulous, rubber suited monsters. Their faces were grotesquely comical. Each unique monster was lovingly created with creepy, campy perfection. There is a healthy helping of bloodshed and gore too. Trevor Matthews is quite good as Jack Brooks and Robert England gives a hilariously memorable performance as Professor Crowley. The film does suffer some pacing issues. There was more build up than necessary, and the action takes a little too long in coming. But when the action starts, the film goes full throttle. It is one high energy, entertaining scene after another. This is an action-packed, funny, and gory monsterfest, only slightly marred by a slow start. Highly recommended!

OK, obviously taking a gander at the title of this movie it didn't seem like much, in fact, it seemed like a terrible sounding movie. However, once we looked up a trailer for it, we decided we had to see it. Jack Brooks monster Slayer was easily one of the best new cult films I have seen in a long time. Make up effects were amazing, especially considering not a single bit of CG was used. The gags in the movie (supported by the strong acting talent aboard) always served to make me laugh. The Action sequences were very well done, as well as character development. The characters in this movie, especially Jack, are easily likable. All in all I loved this movie, it was fun to watch and a staple in the modern cult horror genre. Go See it! I promise it's worth your time.
