It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

"Blood Work" came as a complete surprise to me. I'd never heard of the film and the ratings on IMDb are mediocre. Yet, I thought it was a terrific film. When I talk about the movie, it is VERY important to point out that I cannot talk about the plot too much as it would be bound to reveal too much about the story. After all, it's a mystery/suspense film and where would the suspense be if I talked about the serial killer or their motives? Suffice to say that it is pretty original...and pretty weird (but in a good way). This is what I feel I can say about the plot. An FBI profiler (Clint Eastwood) is great at his job but he has a huge problem...his heart. It's so bad that he's forced to retire and get a transplant...and the film is about him being pulled back into profiling in order to solve the murder...the murder of the person whose heart he now has inside! There is so much more to it than that....trust me.Overall, this is a super-original story, filled with excitement and suspense. The only thing I didn't like was how angry some of the cops were when Eastwood's character tried to help them with a case which was completely stalled. You'd THINK they'd welcome some expert help!! Still, despite this cliché, it's an amazingly good picture.

Blood Work (2002)Plot In A Paragraph: Still recovering from a heart transplant, a retired FBI profiler (Eastwood) returns to service when his own blood analysis offers clues to the identity of a serial killer. There had been a serious change of pace with Eastwood during the last decade, (both in terms of the number of movies he was releasing and the type of roles he played) This was the first time in 9 years he had played an officer of the law, and it was the first time an Eastwood character had killed someone on screen since Unforgiven nine years earlier. This is a very different Clint cop, as he is very vulnerable quite a bit. He is not the ass kicking, name taking cop he played in the early 90's. The movie is watchable, but it's instantly forgettable, it's predictable and they telegraph who the killer is to the audience from very early on. Blood Work only grossed $26 million at the domestic Box Office to end 2002 as the 94th highest grossing movie of the year. A sad end to Eastwood's work in the detective genre

When I watched this when it first came out back in 2002, I remember thinking that it was pretty good. Upon further review of a more recent viewing, I am sad to report that "Blood Work" does not nearly hold up to the test of time. For a basic plot summary, the movie follows former police detective Terry McCaleb (Clint Eastwood), whose new heart happens to belong to a murder victim, a woman he vows (on the plea of her sister and orphaned son) to avenge by catching her killer. If you watched this movie in the theater back in 2002 without being spoiled by the "twist ending", you probably enjoyed it more than I will describe in this review. At that point in Eastwood's career, it was a nice vehicle in transferring him strictly to "old-timer" roles instead of always trying to "turn back the clock" on his age-appropriateness.In retrospect, though, "Blood Work" has two things firmly against it:1. When it is quickly followed by "Million Dollar Baby", "Gran Torino", and Eastwood's directorial efforts like "The Changeling" and "Flags of Our Fathers", "Blood Work" all of a sudden seems more towards the median line in terms of Clint's overall performance.2. A more fair criticism of the film, though, would be that it is little more than a hard-boiled cop drama that (judging by the reviews of others, as I have not read the book it is based on) includes none of the "heart" (pardon the pun) of its printed page predecessor. There are two many ridiculous logical jumps and character presentations (first and foremost being the ridiculous romance between old-man Clint and his heart-givers much younger sister) to make this flick seem "original" enough to give it screen credibility. Thus, like I said, the very first unspoiled viewing of Blood Work "in its time" might be a little bit better of an experience (though no classic by any means even then), but overall this is a film that will largely be lost to the sands of time (with only Eastwood's name keeping it relevant).

This movie has classic unreal serial killer plot, that alone makes it laughable. Serial killers toying with the people trying to track them is a hackneyed old plot line. But this one takes it to new heights. You see, our intrepid FBI profiler, Dirty Harry, almost nailed the serial killer, "The Code Killer" but had a heart attack during the cbase. But Harry winged the perp as the perp escaped. Well two years later Harry got a heart transplant, he gets approached by the pretty sister of the dead Hispanic woman whose heart saved his life. See her sister was murdered in a senseless looking store hold up. Now, a good human angle like that is a welcome plot element. So naturally, even though Dirty Harry is retired and is recovering from the heart transplant 2 months earlier, he agrees to help her find her sister's killer. This leaves a role for his cardiologist, Anjelica Houston, to get all concerned about his health and advice him to give it up. Then we are introduced with the amiable loafer who lives two boats down from him from the marina, the perennial nice white guy Jeff Daniels. Then we have an obnoxious local Hispanic cop, played by Paul Rodriguez, who is there to rail at and dog Harry's investigation. His performance sucked since his character's motivation was pointless. It was like "Here's a role, the bad officious cop who dogs our intrepid hero." So our serial killer spends two years laying low then decides he has to help his pursuer get a new heart. Which he does by cracking the blood bank system and finding someone with the same rare blood type as Harry's then kill them with a shot to the head so their heart can get harvested. Which makes no sense since Harry wasn't a G Man nor pursuing the Code Killer anymore. So was the killer counting on the dead heart donor's sister to find Harry then re-ignite the case? It made no sense. The killer actually physically meets Harry in disguise. Yet Harry, while physically frail but mentally sharp, doesn't notice that he is someone he knows? And why would the killer pull such a stunt except to move the plot along? Just too many dumb pointless plot elements can ruin a film
