After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
Blistering performances.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
A beautiful film of self-discovery through a journey throughout Canada. The only problem was the weird narration which is for the most part supposed to be humorous but just kills every moment the film had. Just remove the narration part and we'll get a great film out of this.
A movie that makes you stop and think... A tale of a man, diagnosed with terminal cancer, who decides to postpone any treatments, buy a motorcycle and ride west, across Canada. In fact, he puts everything on hold, including his upcoming marriage, so he can have one last adventure. Along the journey, he meets a variety of characters. From each encounter he learns more about life and what is important from other people's perspectives. This movie has some beautiful scenery and a scattering of quirky landmarks. The movie is narrated in part and is quite cleverly written. The acting is subdued, but realistic. Ditto for the dialog. The question the movie asks is "What would you do?"... my answer.. exactly what Ben Tyler(Joshua Jackson)does... go on one last adventure. A bucket list addition well worth including in your own list. It's a good movie. The ultimate road trip.
This is another movie that if I did not have Netflix I most likely would have never seen. Having Netflix has led me to some really good movies like this one that I am so glad to have seen. This movie grabbed my attention with the opening scene so much so that I stopped it, called my wife in and asked her to watch it with me. I restarted it and not only did we enjoy watching it, but occasionally paused it to discuss the scene we had just watched.Numerous times we laughed out loud during it and other times our eyes watered up. What a well told heart touching movie. Joshua Jackson did a great job in his role. I actually am one that thinks that Joshua Jackson, James Van Der Beek and Michelle Williams from the TV show Dawson's Creek are very good actors, though James has not been given the break he needs yet IMO. My wife and I both recommend this to others to watch and enjoy. Who knew there were so many statues in Canada? Another movie that I say "well done" and am glad to have spent some time to have watched it.
Joshua Jackson as 30-ish Ben Tyler hasn't been getting much good news lately. An author, his first book only met with rejection, and now his doctor tells him he has cancer, and not just a localized type but cancer all through his body. He needs to start treatment right away, and there's maybe a one-in-ten chance that he will survive. This small, Canadian movie examines what we personally might do if we got the news that we might not have long to live. Ben's parents and his fiancée all want him to get treatment right away. But Ben decides on a different tack, he will get on his Norton Commando and ride west, across Canada, only to stop when he gets to the Pacific Ocean. With no itinerary, no timetable, and as he says, no incentive to save for retirement, off he goes.In the vein of the old saying "stop and smell the roses", he takes side trips, some even dictated by a breakdown or two. Unintended side benefits are seen, a rancher woman ends up breaking her routine and in the process meets the love of her life. A photo he takes for a German couple has a lasting effect in securing their marriage to each other. But it also has him reexamine his reasons for deciding to get married. The movie is narrated by an unseen character, Campbell Scott, until the very end, which shows a shot of him at the microphone in a recording studio. It is the script for the book that Ben writes, a best-seller, "One Week" about his week traveling across Canada. We never find out if he gets the treatment, or if he gets married, but his journey has given him a meaning for his life.Good movie. Netflix streaming movies.
