All About the Benjamins

Bucum Jackson (Cube) is a bounty hunter with a lot of attitude and no interest in taking on a partner. Working at Martinez Bail Bonds, Jackson has unorthodox methods of tracking down low-life criminals, but they work, and one day he hopes to become his own boss and open up his own private investigation firm. Reggie Wright (Epps) is a slippery con artist who is avoiding the law, and Jackson. During a cat and mouse chase, the two stumble on a multi-million dollar diamond heist. Hiding from Jackson, Wright finds himself in the thieves' getaway van and ends up having to escape from them after they discover their booty is fake, much to the displeasure of their ruthless boss (Flanagan). When Wright meets up with his girlfriend (Mendes), he discovers that his recently purchased lottery ticket is the sole winner of $60 million. Unfortunately, his wallet, which held the ticket, was left in the thieves' van, so he persuades Jackson to help him get it back.

All About the Benjamins (2002)5 word summaryEnemies team up against criminal A cool film. Ice Cube plays a similar character that he does in most of his films, the hard ass smart ass, but it works well with his role. Mike Epps also plays about the same as usual, but it also works really well. They both have pretty good comedic performances which along side the action directing makes a decent/ tolerable action comedy. Its not a fantastic film by any means, and though I said they had good comedic performances, the acting wasn't that great. Personally I think Eva Mendes and Tommy Flannigan acted better, but they still weren't at their best. The directing and writing is also nothing special, it works here, but that's about all you can say about itAll about the Benjamins is a pretty average and predictable action comedy but it was fun and funny. If you are a fan of Next Friday and Friday After Next, you will probably enjoy this "fourth installment." It's very similar in style and definitely similar performances by Cube and Epps. 7/10

"All About the Benjamins" falls into that category I call "something else" movies. As in, when you watch it, you should be doing something else, e.g., paying bills, talking on the phone, drinking with friends, trying to nail the girl you invited to your place, etc. Do not give it your undivided attention, because it doesn't deserve it.It seems like everyone realized they weren't making a very good movie and phoned it in accordingly. The direction is so vague you'd swear it was done by remote control from a helicopter. No one, even the normally enjoyable Ice Cube, ever breaks a sweat trying to get this movie off the ground. If you held this flick up to your ear, you'd hear the ocean. Easy come, easy go. Stay away, or have that "something else" on deck.

The things some people will do for money. This mismatched buddy movie is every bit as fast, funny and action packed as its triler suggested and prooves that money is really the root of all evil. Ice Cube again solidifies himself as the best muscian turned actor as Bucum, a bounty hunter who will do anything to make a quick buck, but gets more than he bargained for when he is sent to bring in Reggie (Mike Epps), a low life street hustler who accidently gets involved with a bunch of blood thirsty diamond crooks who almost kill BUcum while he is looking for Reggie. Trying to avoid jail, Reggie cuts Bucum a deal that he will give him a peice of his 60 millian dollar loto ticket that is in his wallet, which he dropped while trying to escape from the crooks. Epps is generally goofy and reminds me a lot like Eddie Murphy or Chris Tucker, while still being undeniably hilarious but it is Cube who is the master of his own game as he gives a greatly mastered comedic performance. The plot is complex without becoming confusing, making it even more entertaining than suspected and also puts in lot of laugh out loud humor without becoming slapstick. There are also some very funny lines about big stars like Robert Downey Jr., Mel Gibson and Christopher Reeves. Epps and Cube obviously make a good team which was first showcased in the quirky suprise hit Next Friday and with movies like Trespass, Three Kings and Ghosts or Mars under his belt, Cube is becoming not stranger to good action movies. The direction here is also a cut above other movies usually found in this grene, making this one entertaing romp from start to finish. For everyone who couldn't get enough of Money Talks and loved Next Friday, this movie delivers just what the doctor ordered.

Frankly I am getting really sick of all these predictable bad boy movies. The shot this critic takes a Flanagan's accent appeared to be all he could find to whine about, but it's ok to whine about a Scottish accent,..,... but oh Lawdy dont bad mouth Ebonics. I first spotted Flanagan in Sunset Strip and have followed is progress...Brave heart...Gladiator... Attila to name a few, gave us a small glimpse of his real intensity, I think this guy could be the next Hollywood bad boy. The same old bad guys are getting as predictable as the films they appear in, Yea we all love Al Pacino but audition this Flanagan in a modern version Scare face and he might just shock you. His accent getting on your nerves? Perfect....he did his job with his real voice, not some faked lily white English accent. Once again, this guys intensity was gained by surviving some pretty tough streets and if cast in the right spot, his accent, which is not staged, will not only get on your nerves but his role will chill you to the bone.... I have seen some outtakes, and with his glasses off delivering some pretty tough talk right into the camerea this guy could shake up even the toughest of hombres...disturbing more like it. Those film going PC folk will be lying in beds when he gets cast in the role he should be in crying…'Make him stop…Make him stop!' ....just keep your eye on him....and certainly dont turn your back!...Now if I could only spel.
