If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
It was terrible. Stupid plot and stupid characters. The cgi was so awful and cheap looking. I was surprised that it didn't mess up Kate Mara acting career. Even her sister Rooney Mara makes an appearance init. Rooney looks so young init. We all knew that the first urban legend was a flawed film and it was basically a rip off to scream & I know what you did last summer. It was still a fun teen slasher flick. It's definitely watchable compare to the third one. I can't say about the second film because I haven't seen it yet. I only liked Mary's friend grace. She was hilarious . She was stoned and she looked like foxy brown lol. It was so terrible I'm giving it away to a charity shop where my mum works. 1/10
Samantha Owens (Kate Mara) have her two girlfriends for a sleepover. They are interrupted by Sam's brother David. They are all outcasts after Sam published a school news story denouncing the football players. The girls recount a story about the murder of Mary Banner in 1969. She and two other girls were drugged by the football players. Sam also talk about the urban legend of Bloody Mary. Next day, the girls are gone and David accuses the football players of foul play. Sam and her friends reappear later that afternoon disheveled and suffering from the after-effects of a drugging. Soon, the jocks and the captain's girlfriend Heather Thompson are showing up dead in unusual circumstances. Sam and David track down one of the girls from the 1969 incident, Grace Taylor. The biggest name here is Kate Mara. It's odd that Sam's two friends aren't actually main characters. It doesn't help that they are limited actors. David isn't much better but at least, he's functional. Quite frankly, his role is unnecessary and Kate Mara should have been the only protagonist. The story should follow Sam and her two friends from the drugging onwards. The only good kill is the spiders and the CGI is cheap anyways. It's still creepy good. The other kills are either boring or silly or both. There are other issues and this never had a chance to be better than a B-horror.
My favorite urban legend ever is in this movie. It is at the last paragraph of the review, if you are too lazy to watch it yourself. I wish this movie had more Bloody Mary stuff. No one even did the mirror thing. It should have just been called "Mary". The movie shows a teen in a bra and underwear, in which she dies in. Nothing really more sexual. The face of Mary can be disturbing. Her face pops up on a TV, that could be scary. Violence, gore, and milder profanity. Here is the urban legend. It was a little different in the movie, but same concept : A girl named Jenny was home alone with her dog. Her parents had to go to town for the night, and they trusted her to be home alone. There was some news of a serial killer on the loose, but Jenny locked the windows and doors. Every night before bed, Jenny let her dog lick her hand. So she put her hand down off the bed so her dog could like it. then she heard footsteps. She checked the whole house, she found nothing. She got back in bed and let her dog lick her hand. She heard more footsteps. Again, when she looked, she found nothing. She got back in bed and let her dog lick her hand. She fell asleep and awoke at four in the morning to go to the bathroom. There, she saw her dog rotted and hanging from the ceiling. In her dogs blood, it said "People Have Tongues Too".
A supernatural revenge tale, Bloody Mary is a distinct departure for the contemporary slasher Urban Legends series; whilst there are several desperate attempts to tenuously link this tale with the previous instalments, including a brief and inconsequential reference to the earlier films' murders and several mysterious deaths inspired by popular modern folklore, the makers of this one most definitely wanted to distance themselves from the standard stalk and slash format and try something different. The supernatural angle certainly breathes new life into the already stale UL franchise, and provides plenty of entertaining and gory ghostly goings-on, but this approach ultimately fails thanks to a very muddled script and a tendency to veer much too close to other movies for comfort—most noticeably Hideo Nakata's The Ring, Prom Night 2, Final Destination, and of course, Candyman.Still, even though Bloody Mary is very silly at times and will prove to be predictable stuff for horror fans, it does provide some fun death scenes, and is chock full of tasty teenage girls (the school that the heroine attends must have a strict 'no fatties/no uglies' rule). Standout scenes include a sun-bed cremation (that predates a similar scene in Final Destination 3), a 'badly-rendered-CGI-spider-laying-eggs-under-the-skin' gag that has very gory results, a poor guy getting his tackle toasted when he pees on a high-voltage electric fence, and a dead dog with its entrails hanging out.
