In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.

This dichotomous horror cinema progenitor which ripsnortingly delves into the sordid underside of human psyche, is directed by the Hollywood's maverick innovator Rouben Mamoulian and made just shy of the scourge of Production Code. From its unorthodox opening sequences, shot with an ovoid vision-bounded subjective angle, immediately viewers realize they are watching something novel, intriguing and challenging the normalcy of our ocular perception of the silver screen. Even appraised in this day and age, Mamoulian's sleight-of-hand still resoundingly holds court. In the Victorian London, the respectable Dr. Henry Jekyll (March) concocts a potion which can turn himself into an alter ago of his dark side, Mr. Hyde, whose appearance also changes into a primitive, simian-like reprobate and is immune to any conscience and morality. One of the most extraordinary visual tricks from Mamoulian is the deceptively uninterrupted close-up of Jekyll's visage morphing into Hyde's under our direct scrutiny, which he would spill its magic beans decades later. Also, prominent and equally impressive is his implement of montages, in particular during Dr. Jekyll's first transmogrification, a hallucinogenic concatenation of the extrinsic incentives which tease out a decent man's darkest facet. A whey-faced Fredric March wins his first BEST ACTOR Oscar award (shared with Wallace Beery in King Vidor's THE CHAMP 1931) for buckling down this Janus-faced showcase and rendering it with both ample empathy and pathos, Jekyll's repeated frustration of consummating with his sweetheart fiancée Muriel (Hobart) works up as the primal trigger of Hyde's unleashing and persistence, it is rather incisive to link a human's sexual impulse with his dark side, a motif naturally falls in with Victorian mores and codes of behavior, and looking back, how to lift "sex" from the list of taboos really signifies a big step to understand humanity,The two actresses serve as trimmings under March's duopoly, are diametrical in their social statuses, but not so much in their abject thirst of love and blind subjugation to Jekyll's gentleman-like front: Miriam Hopkins' terrorized Ivy Pierson is incredibly harrowing when we all too well really that she is doomed in the cul-de-sac, and Rose Hobart's ladylike meekness might reflect what one deems as a noble and devoted wife-to-be then (don't give up your man no matter what), but teeters on the brink of mawkishness quickly seen through a more critical eye. With all the classic oldies now in vogue for revamping and retrofitting, Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless warhorse could be well infused with a progressive spin (human iniquity is a gold mine to milk) to exhort younger generations, but Mamoulian's ingenuity is nevertheless, substantially nonpareil.

This film is far superior to the 1941 version with Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner. Fredric March's portrayal was more subtle than Tracy's. March's Mr. Hyde is terrifying, especially in his scenes with Miriam Hopkins, but at the same time, he was able to imbue his "bad side" personality with sympathy, especially toward the end when he realizes the monster that he's become because he messed with his natural impulses through the use of chemical augmentation. The scene where Jekyll is watching his fiancée cry and he desperately tries to control his impulses and keep himself from transforming was well-acted by March and was very sad to watch. I thought March did an excellent job and he earned his Oscar.Spencer Tracy's rendition of Mr. Hyde was way too hammy and the makeup was ridiculous. He seemed forced and over the top, whereas March's portrayal of the two sides of his personality was more complex. Both Jekyll and Hyde had their bad parts. Hyde, even though he did some awful things, may have had some good qualities despite his selfish and unconscionable behavior. Based on March's portrayal, it seems that the best of human nature lies somewhere in the middle of Jekyll and Hyde.Miriam Hopkins is very good here as the professional trollop who gets more than she bargained for in Hyde. I thought her cockney accent was a little uneven, but it didn't detract from her performance. Miriam's bad girl liked to take chances, and thus she gets herself into questionable situations, but she didn't deserve the fate of being stuck with the abusive Mr. Hyde.I really liked her opening scene with Dr. Jekyll where she flaunts her legs and ends up nude in the bed with a strategically placed sheet, that was pretty risqué, even for a pre-code. Unfortunately, her whispered "come back" was a temptation for Dr. Jekyll, but it was an invitation for Hyde. The scene where Mr. Hyde attacks her was very frightening and I thought that Hopkins and March acted it well.I think that director Mamoulian managed to keep the secret of Hyde's transformation until his death or pretty close to it. That is an accomplishment in and of itself - keeping a secret that long. At any rate, highly recommended.

One of my favorite horror films, everything in this movie is great, the cinematography, the acting, the writing, the characters, the direction, everything, there are some ambitious camera angles, and a great opening. This is a pre-code horror film, so there are some disturbing moments in the film, such as the abuse that Hyde shows to the woman, even some of the violence in the film, but it has a point to it.The movie is about the duality of man, the good side of a man, the one that chooses to do the right thing, the one that chooses to be polite and educated, while the other side its more like an animal, it only follows its primal instincts, the film its surrounded with symbolism about this duality, and what happens if the animal side of a man takes complete control over him.Overall, its a great film, I definitely recommend it.

One of the creepiest older sci-fi horror films ever made. Fredric March's performance as Jekyll/Hyde was superb. This is one of those films where most of the horror is subtle - the idea of this looking hideous man-creature Mr. Hyde on the loose. The story is, in it's way, similar to 'The Invisible Man' and 'Frankenstein' because we have a scientist that is considered to be insane for creating monsters yet their intentions started out good.Dr. Jekyll's beliefs in the good man vs the evil man lead him to experiment with the concept. By doing so, he created the strong, primitive Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll represents the brain and the good side of man while Mr. Hyde represents the brawn and the evil.I love these older horror films - they are still some of the best, most creative movies ever made.10/10
