Sorry, this movie sucks
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Stephen King has provided some very good material for a couple of great movies, Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile being two examples. Dolan's Cadillac is not anywhere near that level, although it is watchable. Tom is a teacher in Las Vegas whose wife, Elizabeth, goes horseback riding in the desert and stumbles upon an execution. She is seen by the killer, a gangster named Jimmy Dolan(Christian Slater), and she rides off as Dolan's fellow criminals shoot at her.Tom and Elizabeth go to the law and are placed in the witness protection program. Liz gets bored sitting around, and runs to their car, which explodes when she attempts to start it. Tom is devastated and vows to get Dolan. He gets a gun and follows the killer, and is discovered and beaten up by the gangsters men.Tom gets a job working on the roads doing construction. He works at night digging a big hole as a trap for the Cadillac. What follows is predictable as the Caddy is detoured by Tom towards the pit. The movie has a Twilight Zone feel to it, which is not surprising, since Stephen King has admitted to being a fan of the Rod Serling anthology show, and Slater is good, so it gets a slight thumbs up.
Having read the short story by Stephen King before viewing this film, i can clearly confirm that for anyone who is hoping for a faithful adaption, you may find yourself in two half's.The film itself is average. The pacing at the start is spot on and the story should be intriguing enough for you wanting more. This said, I watched this film with a companion and unlike me, he hasn't read the story. I'm not going to moan about how the film isn't better than the book cause it's never is but what i will say is that my friend must of got confused during the final parts. The main character, Robinson, takes up a job on the highways to get a grip of the machinery which he'll be using to execute his plan. This also involves him creating a illusionary canvas and setting up a false detour. I know all this because i've read the book, however, the film does such a awful job showing the characters emotions and there purposes that i'll warn you not to get upset when you find yourself lost.Long story short, film is a mess. Bently at times was laughable, Slater had no swagger and Robinson's Partner was idiotic. I dunno, i loved the story but even if had never read it before setting eyes on the film, it wouldn't of made much difference.
If you are reading this because you liked the short story I would say go for it. I read the story in Nightmares and Dreamscapes and it hung with me. I don't understand the negative comments and all I can figure is that: A. They didn't read the story or B. They didn't read the story. For gods sake, it's not an academy award winner and it wasn't intended to be. This was a very good enactment of the story and that's about all I can say. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon throw away movie. It delivers the essence of the story, Also I would advise any Stephen King fans to read or listen to the audio book, On Writing. It's pretty much an autobiography of the trials and tribulations of a writer who will go down in history as a contemporary, or superior, of any given living writer. Even if you don't write and you just enjoy the reading you will gain volumes of insight into King's mind. It's every bit as fascinating as any of his novels or short stories. Don't dilly dally, just watch it.
Robinson (Bentley) is out to kill Dolan (Slater) for killing wife Elizabeth (Vaugier)This whole thing reeked of amateurs trying to act like professionals. Really bad. The dialogue suffered as did we all. I almost shut this down but wanted to see how Robinson, a 6th grade teacher, would take care of business with Dolan, a crime boss in Las Vegas. This should have been left as a short story by Stephen King. It's the dialogue that made the actors look and sound like they were rehearsing lines. To be fair, the last third of the movie was better, but when you are scurrying around putting someone to death what was learned in acting class doesn't seem to help much. By the same token when you are the one being snuffed, the screaming and pleading almost seemed real enough, but what was learned in acting class doesn't seem to help much. I had no sympathy for the snuffer or the snufee. Maybe there were never any acting classes. Now, what does the Cadillac have to do with all this? Well, Dolan practically lived in it and when Robinson was taking care of business, the Cadillac became a prime player. Really bad.Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No, but came close. Racial slurs: Yes. Language: Yes, non stop.
