At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

Today is Ms. Pollyanna McIntosh's Birthday (March 15), so by celebrating I watched one of her films which Is the adaptation from Master Of Horror Jack Ketchum's novel and he also wrote the screenplay for this film. Directed by Andrew Van Den Houten and great special effects by Anthony Pepe. The Woman played by Pollyanna has the looks of Pocahontas but in a hellish way which I loved. I also loved the performance by Erick Kastel, the guy is simply good, the hitcher scene and the kids were awesome too playing an insane group of flesh eaters. This is one intense, disturbing gory cannibal film which I will never get bored of!!!

I first heard of Jack Ketchum, whose story this movie is based off of, when I was looking at some website and it mentioned the book, The Girl Next Door. Although I haven't read it yet, his name and the book title has stuck with me, since it's suppose to be disturbing. If The Girl Next Door is as anything like Offspring, then yes it will be.After the watching the movie, (I'll get to that in a second), I did a quick search on Ketchum and got this from Wikipedia; "Later, in his teenage years, Ketchum was befriended by Robert Bloch, author of Psycho, who became a mentor to him. He supported Ketchum's work just as his work was supported by his own mentor, H.P. Lovecraft." That would definitely help to explain how his unique mindset was encouraged to grow. From the first part of the movie, where the cannibal children are sitting on the kitchen counters cackling in happiness surrounded by blood and guts to the rest of the movie with them jumping out and biting people, I said out loud, "And that is one more reason why I didn't have kids."But it was so much more than kids doing that, there was also their inbred parents, along with lots of topless women, and creepy sexual encounters. If you enjoy a gore fest, this is one you'll probably want to watch, since there was lots of blood, body parts, and eating of flesh. The pulling out the the intestines was a nice touch.Movies with inbred people creep me out the most. I can handle clowns and dolls, but people with teeth missing and who only communicate in grunts, is just too close to something that could actually happen.

Fronted by the fame of Jack Ketchum "Offspring" does no favours for the man behind the idea. In a small lavishly situated in North-Eastern USA woodland area just next to the ocean, numerous series of morbid murders and disappearances have occurred in the span of the several generations. In the latest of them a young couple and their baby were brutally murdered and than dissected for meat by a group of roaming savage cavemen teenagers. But the carnage is only just begun, as apparently this is feeding season...Devoid of proper pacing or acting "Offspring" puts all its money on one card: visceral brutal gore (including fairly graphic disembowelling, burning people alive, baby-killing, brain-munchies and a very disturbing biting off of a vagina). The plot that crudely staples the movie together is a whisker away of falling on top of itself, mainly due to some inept back-story, where apparently the police know about these 'cave-men' for decades, but just didn't have the proper motivation (?) to do something about the issue. Irrespective of how many people, including children, go missing due to their activities. Any doubts regarding this wanton incompetence is cast aside by a statement, that the wild people roam freely across the border with Canada and there is no exchange of information between the two countries. This would however at least presume that however wild our rapturous cannibals may be, they still have a strong sense of self-preservation. Which unfortunately goes amiss at the start of this debacle, when they go on a killing spree and do not even bother to cover up their tracks, hence bringing about a hunt (however misguided it may turn out to be).Mingling in between this nonsense is a yuppie group of cardboard characterisations, which only benefit to the story is that they turn out to be useful for nondescript morbid murder and torture (although I fail to see why a women breastfeeding someone elses baby would result in her screaming in agony and despair, but well... I ain't a woman).Obviously filmed on a shoe-string budget and unfortunately the only thing that the creators were adept at was making proper disgusting and adequately gory special effects. Within the confines of the lack of money and filmmaking skills (strongly suggesting this was in all essence a student film) this pastes together to become quite an overdrawn, predictable and tiresome affair with substandard cinematography, lighting, sound, editing and acting (complemented by overflowing cheesy dialogue).

This is probably how a film by Ed Wood would look nowadays, if he would have made his films at modern standards! Not that there are many technical mistakes, but it takes about 20 minutes to get used to the wooden-handed style of direction and poor acting. If you can stand through that so far, and don't mind very dumb policemen in a movie, the film actually delivers enough gory scenes which might be quite enjoyable for fans of the genre.Funny was that the Japanese DVD had subtitles for the dialogs between the cannibals, I doubt that there are some in the original version.Except the taboo of the involvement of children, this film based on Jack Ketchum's novel lacks the intensity of "The Girl Next Door" which I liked much better!
