You won't be disappointed!
Excellent but underrated film
A Masterpiece!
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Lida MacGillivery (Bo Derek) is a free-spirited girl graduating from a British boarding school. She travels around the world to have adventures with her chauffeur Cotton (George Kennedy) and friend Catalina. She tries to lose her virginity to a young Sheik but he falls asleep. In Spain, she falls for bullfighter Angel despite a jealous gypsy. She befriends Paloma (Olivia d'Abo). Angel is injured by a bull and can't perform sexually. If the goal is to see Bo Derek naked, this achieves that goal. However, almost everything in this is laughable. The story is overwrought stupidity that is only worthy of the worst pulp romance novels. The acting is even worst. Bo Derek is unbelievable as a young virginal girl. This may work as softcore porn but I think John Derek is actually serious.
A lot of people seem to miss the point about this fantastic movie. Not every film has to have a believable plot, well-written dialogue and perfect acting, etc. Those which do are fine in their own way, but it would be a dull world if they were all the same. "Bolero" needs to be judged on its own terms and according to its own objectives. Surely if you watch a movie produced by Golan and Globus (and Bo Derek!), directed and photographed by John Derek and starring Bo Derek, you know what to expect. To complain or mark it down because it delivers exactly that is just plain stupid."Bolero" achieves all that it sets out to do (and more!). It has an interesting enough storyline to keep the audience entertained between nude scenes and plenty of great nude scenes to keep us entertained between the other bits. Bo Derek's acting isn't anywhere near as bad as some people here would have us believe -- certainly way better than that of Ana Obregon and Greg Bensen. Let's face it, though: John Derek didn't cast his wife in this movie for her acting ability, or for her resemblance to a teenage virgin -- neither Mrs Derek nor Ms Obregon were even remotely believable in that respect, but that is irrelevant.Bo Derek succeeded admirably in doing what was required of her in "Bolero" -- providing us with something good to look at. She is a very attractive woman, and never looked better than she does in this movie. Even without all of the great humour (some of which may have been, as some critics suggest, unintentional), the beautiful scenes of Mrs Derek are enough to merit at least 5 stars out of ten. What makes it worth all 10 stars, for me, is not Bo Derek, lovely as she may be, but the wonderful Olivia d'Abo. Her portrayal of the young Spanish gypsy, Paloma, is incredibly funny, intriguing and gorgeous at the same time. Her nude scenes alone make this movie worth watching, especially where she stands up in the bathtub and announces proudly, "I am woman. Ready. Juicy, too!" For Ms d'Abo's performance, I would give "Bolero" 11 stars out of 10, if I could.
OK, maybe it was bad... pretty bad. Some of this John/ Bo Derek collaboration is incredibly stupid, flawed and confusing, the editing is a little all over the place and inconsistent and Bo Derek simply cannot act. However, it isn't one of the worst movies in the world. Circa 1920s, A recent beautiful-mega rich school graduate, Lida "Mac" MacGillivery (Derek) and her irritating BFF Catalina (Ana Obregón) spontaneously decide to travel overseas to lose their virginities, Mac has her standards and wants it to be perfect and we follow their pathetic story of love, sex, friendship and frustration. I sat around watching the whole thing, it felt like 4 hours (only was 105mins), but I did watch the whole Derek project. Bo Derek is absolutely stunning, she is gorgeous and an absolute knockout in this film-- at her prime. Throughout this movie, viewers are treated to her getting nude every 15 minutes (flawless body) and getting screwed a by her Spanish man Angel (Andrea Occhipinti), we also get to watch Lida ride horses (once nude) and participate in bullfighting. The locations are impressive, the score fits, and the sex scenes are weird but erotic at the same time.Bo Derek has a love for animals, particularly horses, and purposely incorporated them into this film, her love for the creatures really show throughout which I appreciated. Now I'm looking for Ghosts Can't Do It, apparently an even worse film, last night went through the old video tapes at my local video store to no avail.
Seems pretty heavy for an American "R," doesn't it? Anyways, like many other romance movies, this isn't your average romance film. "Bolero" is one that is so romantic, you and your spouse (or partner) will deeply fall in love with this movie (as well as each other). It's so romantic...well, words just can't describe it! As for us guys, well, we watch these types of movies for the ladies and the excitement! This is one movie that is a must for any DVD collection - whether it's just romantic movies or a whole mix of movies - "Bolero" is such a timeless classic. It ranks up there, in my opinion, with "Casablanca," "Citizen Kane," and "Gone With The Wind." :')
