best movie i've ever seen.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I'm not certain what happened to this film and how it eluded me for so long. Released in 2009, this is a story about two American families coming apart during the 1970's. It's very well told from Rory Culkin's character's perspective, as a young teen discovering his parent's marriage is pretty acrimonious. It also has a coming of age feel to it as Culkin gets his bum whipped, then watches his older brother (played marvelously by real brother Kieran Culkin) literally pulverizes the bully who beat his kid brother. Alec Baldwin, who becomes the focus of most of Culkin's ire, is a true standout. I would say this is his best work since Glengarry Glenross. It also features Emma Roberts in a role that could have easily become a one note sex symbol but she makes it very real and adds depth. Especially during an unforgettable loss of virginity scene that is so uncomfortable even though the actors are fully clothed. I almost took a point away for the ending but then I re-watched it and understood that it was supposed to be just a few simple momenta that ended the film. All the drama had happened and any more would have probably put it too far over the top. This is not a comedy. It is funny. Very funny at times. But not in a yuk yuk way. these people are real and some of the things they say and do are funny in a real sort of way. And it's also a bit heartbreaking. I don't know how I missed this one. It is a classic of the genre.
Lymelife good movie but like some review and mistakes said , it should be a 70's movie but so many mistakes like the school bus you see couples time not a 70's model , the mini van also RAM 250 no such way in 70's Product at the grocery way ahead , Confirmation party you see a bottle wine with barcode on it !!! not too many product with barcode product in the 70's.Not easy to make a movie from the 70's but please use the right stuff to do it , if is on the background that's one thing because sometime you can't control it , but like the school bus big focus on it wow ! Beside that good movie to watch only one time , remind me "The Ice Storm " Enjoy
I can honestly say, that this is a fantastic film, with some excellent performances by the main cast, in particular the Culkins, Baldwin,Hutton and Nixon. The story is a simple but beautifully written tale of love, divorce, war and hope in America at time of political and economic change. Admittedly, this was never going to be a box office hit, or the top of the list for nominations, but it is an honest, heart felt film and I think it is very under-rated, probably because isn't very well known. I saw it late one night I couldn't sleep and I was glad, for the first time in my life, that I hadn't been able to drift off, otherwise, I would have missed this gem.If you ever get the opportunity to watch the film do so. You won't regret it.
I frankly don't get it. What kind of taste, intelligence, knowledge of life, has the people that tell us it's a masterpiece?? I stopped seeing it about after 10 minutes run. I couldn't stand the look of those two (brothers?), the stupid script, the aging Baldwin... I'm quite disoriented by all these fabulous eulogies. Do they love anything that comes out of Hollywood automatically?? It doesn't matter that we see all the incongruence about mentioning things that didn't appeared until ten years or more later?? Are people that ignorant about the recent past?? They don't care if the historical period is reported inaccurately?? Every situation is so trivial, we have seen them a trillion times before. What was funny about the dialog?? Uff..., I have so many question that I better stop here because I don't give two hoots about this movie.
