To me, this movie is perfection.
Save your money for something good and enjoyable
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
This movie is pretty weird, but I still gave it an 8 because I am easily entertained. Thurston is so adorably cute how he is so into Caroline. It is kind of annoying at times how Kat Dennings has to narrate the story. I like the cast of stars in the film. It's sad how it is probably a real depiction of most towns in that they are filled with kids having sex and doing drugs. I had seen it before and didn't even remember that there was someone else than the obvious who ends up being the serial killer. It reminded me of Fargo (tv show) how there was some guy who lost his mind and was plaguing the whole town by murdering off innocent people. It ends alright with Caroline and Thurston and their favorite spot standing making out and her saying how life is worth living even if it's not forever.
This is the first time I put one star on the movies that I watched. I'm speechless with this movie. Yeah. Speechless with so many confused in my head. BLOODY HELL!!! What the meaning of this movie? With so many Story of... and I think ain't important for this movie. Romantic? Oh no! (I'm just excited when the little boy and girl sleep together with hand in hand it's so sweet. but JUST IT! the others? the main characters? HELL NO!) I hate the goddamn' bitch, slut or whatever she is (I don't care). Comedic? Hm... I wanna cry with this movie. Why? because I don't understand. I wanna cry because why I watched this movie. Very sorry. It's officially not funny. Dramatic? Officially OVER! and Over is always not better. I hate the heroine. I hate hm--I'm not sure who is the hero in this movie. But most of all. I hate this movie. Badly. Thank you.
We started watching this on Netflix streaming movies and aborted after 18 minutes when the high school character began to seduce her teacher at his home. But I was curious so watched it to completion on the second evening. While it isn't as bad as we initially thought it would be, it still isn't a very good movie, especially when you consider the quality of the actors.Kat Dennings is Caroline Wexler, high school student new in town, her mother died and she and her dad live alone. She is smarter and more world-wise than the other high school students and she never resists an opportunity to explain that to one of them.Josh Lucas is Barry Anderson , one of her teachers. She decides rather quickly that she will seduce him and begin an affair with him. Even though she is 18 (actually in her early 20s) and he is 30-something (actually about 38 during filming) she seems to be the more adult in the pairing. The other key character is Reece Thompson as Thurston Goldberg , a nice boy who wants to date Caroline but she seems preoccupied, but he doesn't give up. In a good performance in a supporting role is Andie MacDowell as his mother, Enid Goldberg .We have seen Lucas in a number of different roles, including this seasons TV series "The Firm", and his role here is a complete departure from anything he has done before. He handles it well, as does Dennings, but overall it is a mediocre movie at best, dealing with life angst among teachers and teenagers. Plus a serial killer running around.
This one just happened to appear on Showtime today. I started to watch it and about 15 minutes in I said "ok I will record this and watch it later." I kept watching and at about 30 minutes in I was still watching. I kept watching more and more of it and saying I would watch it later. Pretty soon the whole 1 and 3/4 hours went by and I found myself unable to tear myself away. It was impossible to stop. I was hypnotized.I usually don't find much to like about movies these days. They are violent, loud, juvenile, predictable and boring. Finally one that has real characters, in real situations, with real thoughts and feelings. The characters are mature and well drawn with depth and the kind of complexity that says volumes about the observational skills of the writer. It was sensitively directed and acted. And you know what the best thing about it was? At any moment in the film I had no idea where it was going. I have seen thousands of films and I can spot a cliché a mile away. This one was like no other film I have ever seen. Totally unpredictable.Do whatever you have to do to see it. Treat yourself to something different then you can go back to films with drugs, car crashes, guns, and urban horror stories. Just give yourself one chance to see a really well crafted and mature work of art.
