The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

The movie really just wants to entertain people.

One of the most boring movies I've seen with Bette Davis. Complete lack of characterization. Don't fall for the William Wyler hype machine, this one's a dud.

As it happened, however, only composer Max Steiner reached that goal, although Jezebel is not only excellent entertainment but excels in every aspect of its production: flawless acting dominated by the driving portrayal of Bette Davis as the self-willed Julie; gorgeous costumes and no-expense-spared sets with hundreds of extras impressively regimented in spectacular crowd scenes — Wyler successfully showing off his mastery of both action and intimate, soul-baring emotional scenes. The film's only weakness is its facile soap opera script — high class soap opera, but still, for all its impeccable staging, as sudsy as a Hollywood bubble-bath.

Much has been written about Bette Davis's performance in this film. Apparently, she thought she would get the role of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind." It didn't work out so she was tossed the role of Julie in "Jezebel." She made due to the hilt. She plays an ambitious woman who feels she can dominate any situation and get what she wants from any man. She is engaged to Henry Fonda who forces her to show her true colors (in the form of a red dress that embarrasses her publicly). Fonda's character cuts her loose and she goes about trying to win him back. She can be compared easily to Scarlett because she seemed to be sort of a Teflon character herself. The ending is quite good as redemption is at stake in the worst of situations. Davis's performance really stands atop the mountain.

By sheer chance I have come across this film.I had not heard about it. I have seen GTWW. How can I watch this movie> Can any one help? I had heard much about Betty Davis and her talents but never came across this film. While reading about sex workers of Calcutta I came across Jezebel.com and I am glad that I have come across this movie history. I am from India and I have a doubt whether I will be able to watch this beautiful movie.Help will be definitely appreciated. I also have heard about Henry Fonda. Photos are beautiful and description of storyline here is simple and extraordinary. Trivia about Betty Davis also is interesting. I would love to know about other old movies. Girish
