Am i the only one who thinks........Average?
This is a usual setup, unwitting guy has married a woman who might not be who he thinks. Paranoia ensues. As we go through it all, we come to understand that he had his dream woman all along and blew it for capricious human nature, it opens with him being divorced from her.It sits for a while on an edge I like. What if she reinvented herself as we find out, Texas girl who run away from a redneck life, and was determined to pursue him like a man would? What if she isn't manipulatively evil but he is controlling and wants her to be at home waiting for him? We get the notion that he might be a crank and it may have played a part in his first marriage. She would then be anchoring a world where you can be troubled and determined both, self is fluid and we have to suspend judgment until the dragon flies in the sky. Amick is sensitive and bold enough in her poise to facilitate this double perspective. But of course the anchor is moved to calculating ruthlessness and we collapse to devious narrator who has been weaving a story that entraps all along, complete with actors, props and backstory. It becomes the garish fun where she won't tell him if their kids are his own, and the hapless stooge is dangling on strings of what she controls. I give it a positive mark because of how watchable in that video thriller sense of sardonically invented storytelling for the pleasure, but we're watching a cartoon by the end.Noir Meter: 2/4 | Neo-noir or post noir? Ray Reardon (James Spader) is a successful architect. His wife cheats on him and they get a divorce. He even allows her to get the best of the settlement. His friend Norman (Larry Miller) asks him for a loan but Ray refuses to give him the full amount. At Norman's party, he meets Lena (Mädchen Amick) but it doesn't go well at first. Subsequently, they get together, even get marry and have kids. However, he becomes suspicious of her and she puts him in an asylum. There are two great actors in this movie. More precisely, there are two perfectly cast actors in this movie. The problem is that Nicholas Kazan is not up to the task as a director or a writer. He's making this an erotic thriller but the thrills are mostly pushed to the last act. Ray should be committed to the asylum earlier and his struggle should be more compelling. His directing is even worst. It's lifeless. This is a missed opportunity with two terrific actors.
Handsome and successful architect Ray Reardon (a strong and engaging performance by James Spader) is recovering from a painful divorce when he meets and immediately falls in love with the charming and beautiful Leena Mathers (a marvelously sultry and enchanting portrayal by the luscious Madchen Amick). The two get married and settle down to a life of total bliss. But is Leena really as perfect as she seems? Writer/director Nicholas Kazan relates the crafty and involving story at a steady pace, peppers the picture with several neatly surreal dream sequences, and delivers several nifty twists and turns that culminate in one startling doozy of a surprise downbeat ending. Spader and Amick both do outstanding work in the lead roles; they receive able support from Fredric Lehne as Ray's loyal buddy Larry, Larry Miller as jolly, rascally, wisecracking pal Norman, Bess Armstrong as shrewd lawyer Elaine, Kate Williamson and Tom Lillard as Leena's scrappy hick blue collar parents, and William Shockley as scruffy redneck Buddy. Moreover, this movie offers a valid and provocative point about how letting the wrong person into one's life can completely destroy said life. Jean-Yves Escoffier's slick and agile cinematography gives this picture a pleasing glossy look and makes expert use of a smoothly gliding Steadicam. Christopher Young's spare shivery score enhances the slowly mounting tension without ever becoming remotely obtrusive or overbearing. Well worth a watch.
Dream Lover is about a man who marries a woman and then has questions about her past. Dream Lover features a fine performance by James Spader, one of my favorite actors and a good comic relief performance by Larry Miller. But if you venture into this film you'll have to also believe that a wife with only the word of her private psychiatrist can have her husband committed to an insane asylum. At the hearing the husband does not document her infidelity, her lies or her hidden past. Otherwise fine performances by the cast members. And is that some cheap location shooting I saw? Looks like the wedding reception was held on the sidewalk in front of the studio. And tight shots around the limo looks like they didn't rent it long enough to cover the scene. Anyway, it was nicely photographed but will require some vivid imagination on the part of the viewer to go along with the concept.
