Simply A Masterpiece
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Exterminator Alex Mathis (Greg Grunberg) likes women and loathes fruitcake. Through a series of improbable circumstances he gets to fight an aggressive BA spider along side of the US military with a Mexican sidekick. In a number of scenes Grunberg reminded me of Kevin James and I had a few John Goodman flashbacks. The film had blood and cheesy props (notice the thanks to Lloyd Kaufman in the credits) . The "horror" aspect simply didn't exist. Overly accomplished, relatively unknown Clare Kramer provided the love interest.Great for cheese lovers.Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity. Bikini girls being chased by BS spider.
The main character lacks some of the swagger of Bruce Campbell, but is still recklessly brave both when fighting spiders and hitting on women. His sidekick is hilarious and the two act inappropriately playful as they are nearly killed over and over. The best part of this silly film is the interaction between these two. The rest is (parodic?) science fiction tropes: the military taking over without explanation, the refusal to warn the public to avoid panic, the spider's screaming sounds, the ineffectiveness of the military weapons, the actions of the main players, etc. This could be any giant monster movie, except for the clever hero and sidekick bits. And there are a few funny news flashes that are fun. Don't get me wrong, it's very entertaining. I laughed and hooted quite a few times. What this has over syfy camp like Sharknado and Megashark vs Giant Octupus is that the characters in this movie are funnier and more self-aware a la Bruce Campbell, as opposed to the chest- thumping macho drones and generic screaming ladies in the syfy movies.
Somewhat amusing horror comedy about, well, you know. Greg Grunberg makes an affable hero as an exterminator who comes across a gigantic spider at a hospital. The Army (led by Ray Wise) soon arrives, and Grunberg hopes to kill it and collect a reward before the Army can beat him to it. Meanwhile, the spider continues to feed and grow. This pretty much follows the same template as any giant monster movie. I don't really like CGI effects, and the spider looks pretty awful. What makes this movie almost worth watching is the comedy. It is pretty funny. Grunberg teams up with a Mexican security guard (Lombardo Boyar), and the two have a pretty amusing give and take. Boyar's character might be just a tad too stereotypical, though (an appearance by some black street toughs confirms my suspicion that the director was a little too into racial humor; although, I'd guess by the name that he is Hispanic, so, I don't know, maybe it's okay?). Clare Kramer is pretty good as Grunberg's love interest, an Army lieutenant. Not bad for what it is, and it is very short.
Just sit back and enjoy. Don't think, leave your brain in the cupboard and you will have your laughs now and then. This science-fiction comedy works due a few things. We do have an actually story and the acting is above mediocre. Not only that, there are serious parts involved, the army going out to destroy the spider and the funny part, a simple exterminator out to save the world with the help of his Mexican friend. The Mexican and the American alone works but both combined to rescue the world makes it even funnier. And of course when the Mexican is out for help you will have a great Mexican score. But not only that. The effects used for the spider are also above mediocre even as it is CGI. When the spider attacks and it do so in several ways, spitting acid, or making webs or just stabbing it's all dine in a rather gory way. It's not a Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) kind of comedy but it was indeed funny. And it moves on, there's never a moment that gets boring or whatsoever. Towards the end it's a bit of King Kong (1933) homage and even that works, by then it's just a no-brainer but it do works until the end. Stay tuned when the end credits are running, the end joke and score is great.Gore 1,5/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 3/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 2,5/5
