This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

It's hard to believe that there's an entire sub-genre of 'killer scarecrow' features which has existed ever since the grand-daddy of the genre, the excellent DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW, came out in 1980. In the past decade there have been plenty of low budget additions to the genre, none of them much to write home about, and HUSK is such a movie. It's a staple of bargain bins everywhere, a film shot over the space of a couple of weeks which took two years to be released. And for a B-movie, it's not too bad, but not too great either. The storyline is okay but the script is sub-par, although there's a very fast pace which helps to disguise some of the problems. The storyline features a typically annoying group of youths whose car breaks down at the edge of a corn field. They're soon being menaced by a supernatural scarecrow that has the power to recruit others to its cause.HUSK isn't a particularly gruesome film but the monsters are well achieved and rather effective, especially with those sewing machine scenes. It's a shame that the main characters are more lifeless than their zombified counterparts, but those of a forgiving disposition may find themselves mildly enjoying HUSK despite its many flaws; sadly I wasn't one of them.

Overall, 'Husk' inspired within me a sense of nostalgia for horror movies of the seventies and eighties. In that light perhaps my review will be considered a biased one based on yearning for pictures of that era. However, if you are a serious horror fan who is closer to his fourth decade mark than the third, skip my review and watch 'Husk' without further delay. You will enjoy it. 'Husk' brought to mind films such as 'Hell Night' and 'Scarecrows' - that is a good thing. Nostalgia again. I do miss the dark, unpredictable films of those bygone years. Years before CGI and hundred million dollar budgets. Way back when a horror movie was made with the dual purpose of frightening you and making you think while it did so. When horror flicks made you sweat bullets for the doomed protagonists or yell at the screen to warn them or tell them how foolish was their blunder into the dark cellar.'Husk' begins with a group of college kids (who else?) on a road trip to do some (what else?) partying at (you guessed it) a cabin somewhere. Thankfully, they never get there. Our cast of twenty something soon to be victims of dark horizons have decided that instead of following a bustling macadam six lane, it'd be wiser to take a detour through hell's backyard. This time around the devil's acreage turns out to be a back country barely two lane that cuts through a lost swath of the heartland. After a very brief introduction to three of the five characters (two are asleep in back of the car)something ends their ability to continue on and they find themselves stranded in a sea of late season corn. Right about here arises the first of very few problems I have with the film - the killing begins too soon. That's it. I enjoy a script that gives me a chance to meet each of the characters before some spawn of hell chomps down on them. Oh well, the score right off the bat is one down, four to go. What follows is a cast of semi shallowly written characters brought to life by competent enough actors who struggle to find help for their damaged ride while searching for their missing friend. Wrapped around the aforementioned is a surprisingly well thought out story which includes much time spent in an appropriately creepy, abandoned farmhouse and a supernatural game of cat and mouse (sorry, no disappointing human slasher element here).Normally I would delve deeper into the plot and happenings while writing out a review but this time I do not want to risk spoiling the goods for others. To sum up, if you're a fan of movies like 'Mama' or pretty much any of the PG-13 horror flicks of late, you might not like 'Husk'. Otherwise, if John Carpenter and George Romero are your guys, run right out and rent or by this movie. You'll "get" it.

I always review my movies after the first time watch, because that's when they make the first honest impression on me. Usually after that they get better as I pick up on more plot lines and clues. I give this movie an eight, because it's original. Aside form the 1990's "Scarecrows" ;which . by the way ,I thought was excellent; there hasn't been a whole lot of good SCare Crow themed movies. Scare Crow 1 and 2 are totally done for fun. Tony Todd and Tiffany Shepis Star, but the Scarecrow flips and talks like Freddy Krueger, so I can't take them too seriously. This movie , however , again puts my faith in the comeback of the old school horror formula.First off; let me explain, that were I live this film was promoted as being Jeepers Creepers 3. It has the title "El Demonio 3" which is what jeepers Creepers titles are given over here. Even on the menu page; the title "Demonio 3" appears, so I thought, what have I got to lose. Upon seeing the scarecrow on the cover I was septic as to it actually being a continuation of the "Jeepers Creepers" series, but it still looked interesting and I knew it had to be better than "Scare Crow" The setting of the movie; which is a farm house, actually had me thinking that this could indeed be Jeepers Creepers 3. In fact; I was compelled to believe this until the first flash backs start. Not willing to give off too many spoilers, but there is even a scene were the scare crow sniffs one of the victims and lets him live. What I like about the movie is that it's quite original. Don't let those reviewers with grudges Against the directors and filmmakers steer you away with words like clichés and bad acting. Not true. In fact, early on, one of the most played out Rules of the horror genre concerning female actors is broken, so this one is full of surprises. You do get cool deja vous feeling of movies from directors like Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven, and that all just lets you know you are in familiar territory and not with a bunch of amateurs who do not know about making horror films. As for the movie itself ;funny enough, starts off with the same car wreck scene as the movie I just yesterday. "Wrong Turn 5" That there blew my mind just a bit, but thinking about it; it's always the best way to get your would be victims to get out and look for help and that's were the fun begins. Actually one of there friends is already missing by the time the other wake up from the car wreck. That there already becomes a mystery to the rest of them as well as the viewer. What follows next is pure unpredictability. The viewer thinks this will happen but instead happens another way.I'd like to write more about the film, but I don't wanna spoil the fun. I will say that it's not Jeepers Creepers 3. It's not a slasher film either. Nor a ghost story. It's a little bit of all three and very enjoyable. the actors all play different roles with really different personalities and agenda for their actions. That last line I just wrote has a lot more to do with the movie than just their acting abilities and what makes up the interesting and original plot line.My one small beef is that the gore factor is pretty low, but I really didn't even notice this until the end of the film, so it really shines in other factors. particulalry the story; which I really enjoyed and honestly can say; have not seen it in any Horror movie yet... and I have many in my collection. My recommendation is; if you haven't already seen it, to view it this Halloween. Nothing like a good Scare Crow movie to get you in the mood for the ghouls and ghosts who will be visiting you all night.

As some others have mentioned, there ARE indeed a few obvious review 'Plants' here from the filmmakers. Usually that annoys me to no end! Maybe because I'm coming to review this film a bit later on it doesn't seem quite so egregious, but I also see a number of negative reviews too.First off, it is a SIMPLE, OLD SCHOOL Horror film. Second, and really think about this now... Just how many truly ***GOOD*** Scarecrow Horror films are there...??? Uh huh... NOT bloody many, right? This one did indeed remind me of 'SCARECROWS' (1988 - UNCUT) which is one of my very favourites and probably THE best Scarecrow Horror out there (not counting of course the Iconic 'DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW' telefilm [1981] which takes THE prize as just about one of the very best Horror telefilms made) It is NOT any where NEAR as heavy and creepy as 'SCARECROWS' (that li'l B@stard lays out some SERIOUS and unrelenting mood - and it gives NO explanation either, except some old photographs of the family that had lived in the house long before) But, in a lighter, simpler way this film is very similar.Yes, the movie is very simple; YES it is extremely low-budget, NO there is not a whole lot to the plot. BUT... And it is a VERY BIG BUT like Mariah Carey's... for what it is, I honestly feel that they did a very good job with it AND very importantly, there are not nearly as many awful and painful amateur moments with the acting, directing, etc. that you normally see a LOT with this kind of low-budget, Indie Horror. The characters come across as decent (NO, not academy material by a long shot, but in my lowly and wretched opinion, FAR better than the usual horrible crappy acting out there) So, if you are looking for extreme originality, forget it. If you are looking for extreme cleverness, nope... But, if you enjoy just a good Old School, fun Horror film, then you should like it.BTW, I really dug the 'sewing room'! That was a nice little creative touch...
