Excellent, Without a doubt!!

Absolutely the worst movie.

Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Directed by exploitation hack Jesus Franco (or Jess if you are that way inclined), Devil Hunter is clearly a film that producers wanted made, jumping on the bandwagon of cannibal films after the success of Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust (1980). But this offering has no social or political points to make like Deodato's "classic" of the sub-genre. What Franco's cannibal film offers is a regular specific of the director. The films story (if we can call it that), is about a model and actress (Ursula Fellner) who is kidnapped and taken into the forests where she is tied to a tree, awaiting for the ransom to turn up. However, on this island, there is a strange, cannibal creature (a naked black guy with bloodied ping-pong balls for eyes that are stuck to the face using Play- Doh), roaming the forests eating women that have been offered by the tribal village.The local tribe seem to worship the cannibal - they have a totem pole that seems to represent it. Basically, the entire film consists of the blonde model captured and recaptured, and generally writhing about the ground naked, and usually being touched by naked tribal women. Devil Hunter is a serious bore. The entire experience makes no sense. It is simply a series of sequences involving pretty naked women.Of course, if you are aware of Franco's main output (i.e. lesbian vampires etc - he also made many hard-core porn movies), and his lack of practice for coherent narrative, then you will know what to expect. There are many fans of his often camp work. His lesbian vampire films that he made in France are pretty well-known, and it would not be uncommon to find one shown on TV (Vampiros Lesbos (1970) and A Virgin Amongst the Living Dead (1971) to name just two). Not sure if I'm referring to those who labeled this a video nasty or to the director..."Devil Hunter" sure is one bizarre 'horror' movie.The plot is a loosey goosey combo of superior films like "Cannibal Ferox" and "Cut and Run." Chick gets kidnapped in the 'jungle' by a 'tribe' of 'savages.' The jungle looks more like a park somewhere in Mexico. The tribe is like a group of hippies who walk around in Party City-style Halloween costume renditions of tribal garb. And the savages range in race from white to Asian to black to hispanic. I suppose Franco just grabbed anyone who looked even slightly ethnic for this romp.To make matters worse, this film has ultra-minimal gore, no real scares and a lot of unnecessary penis. Not fun. I can find something to like in just about any sleazy Italian or Euro-trash film; this one just fell WAY short.2 out of 10, kids.

Of the three titles from Jess Franco to find their way onto the Official DPP Video Nasty list (Devil Hunter, Bloody Moon and Women Behind Bars) this is perhaps the least deserving of notoriety, being a dreadfully dull jungle clunker enlivened only very slightly by a little inept gore, a gratuitous rape scene, and loads of nudity.Gorgeous blonde Ursula Buchfellner plays movie star Laura Crawford who is abducted by a gang of ruthless kidnappers and taken to a remote tropical island inhabited by a savage tribe who worship the 'devil god' that lurks in the jungle (a big, naked, bulging-eyed native who likes to eat the hearts of nubile female sacrifices).Employed by Laura's agent to deliver a $6million ransom, brave mercenary Peter Weston (Al Cliver) and his Vietnam vet pilot pal travel to the island, but encounter trouble when the bad guys attempt a double-cross. During the confusion, Laura escapes into the jungle, but runs straight into the arms of the island's natives, who offer her up to their god.Franco directs in his usual torpid style and loads this laughable effort with his usual dreadful trademarks: crap gore, murky cinematography, rapid zooms, numerous crotch shots, out of focus imagery, awful sound effects, and ham-fisted editing. The result is a dire mess that is a real struggle to sit through from start to finish (It took me a couple of sittings to finish the thing), and even the sight of the luscious Buchfellner in all of her natural glory ain't enough to make me revisit this film in a hurry.

Devil Hunter, The (1980)** (out of 4) A producer is showing off his beautiful actress (Ursula Buchfellner) when terrorists kidnap her and hold her for ransom in the jungle. The producer hires a specialist (Al Cliver) to go in after her but he must battle cannibals and the monster they worship to try and save the beauty. I had previously seen the German version of this film but this new one released by Severin features nearly twelve-minutes worth a new footage and brings the running time up to 102-minutes. I was worried about this but the added running time actually helps the movie. If you know Franco then you know sleaze is his specialty and that's what we get here. There's a whole lot of sleaze in this thing ranging from non-stop nudity to some bloody violence. Speaking of the nudity, I really don't think there are many frames in this film where a woman isn't naked and if there is then it doesn't last more than thirty-seconds or so. As usual, Franco knows how to film a naked body and his camera doesn't shy away from scanning the woman from head to toe and that includes one of the new scenes where a woman does a tribal dance and the camera goes as close as you can to capture those lower regions. Cliver is best known for his role in Lucio Fulci's Zombie but he makes for a good hero. His acting isn't the greatest out there but he does look the part well. Buchfellner is fairly good in her role as well but I'm sure it was her naked body that caught Franco's eyes. The film has a fairly weak story but it does make for some good sleaze if that's what you're looking for.
