Best movie of this year hands down!
Simply A Masterpiece
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
Mimi Rogers is a buxom lady, beautiful like a statuette and Nicholas Roeg's aptly titled Full Body Massage takes full advantage of this fact. She becomes the subject and camera swirls and swipes around her in majestic ways. Bryan Brown plays the masseur who is called on by Rogers for her weekly therapeutic sessions. If you go in with the idea that this is softcore pornography movie you'd be disappointed. Yes, there is nudity but the conversations between the two leads are engaging and interesting. This is one of the great examples why Nicholas Roeg is such an auteur- he can make the most inane subjects and create something special with it. This is an artsy film so go in with that mindset.
I found this movie very strange. It certainly has appeal with the gorgeous Mimi Rogers showing every inch of body off, but the story get very confused. Rogers has a regular weekly appointment for a Massage in her home. One day she is surprised to learn that her regular Masseuse, Dennis has sent a replacement. The replacement, Brian Brown, proceeds to give Miss Rogers her massage and throughout the movie the two engage in some verbal sparing, finding that there is a connection but that there is also a strange friction between them. Mimi Rogers is gorgeous so if you are a fan of hers, you are certainly going to like this movie. If you are into the kind of movie that has some deep dialog, you will also probably like this movie. If your looking for a great story, this movie will disappoint you. I think this movie could have been perhaps a great movie if they concentrated on the relationship between these two opposites following the oft used opposites attract theme. I do recommend this movie simply because Mimi Rogers is too gorgeous to ignore.
I can't really remember much of what this film was supposed to be about, some sort of philosophical ramblings delivered whilst a bloke massages a woman. Who cares? The fact is, you get to see a lot of the glorious Mimi Rogers and her awesome breasts and magnificent buttocks. If that makes me sound like a sad pervert, so be it. To be honest the rest of the film sent me to sleep. How is it that I have to drag myself to work very day and Bryan Brown gets to oil Mimi Rogers up for a living? Okay, so he has some acting talent - not a lot mind you - and I have none, but it's still not fair. In my opinion his finest hour was not his version of Hamlet at the Old Vic but keeping his pants under control during this shoot.... I certainly take my hat off to him for that.
An interesting TV movie from Roeg who uses his dream like camera zooms and flashbacks to great advantage in the restriction of one major location. Brown gives one of his best performance in a role that you would never have cast him in.
