Mosquito Man

Police lieutenant detective Thomas 'Thom' Randall's steady girl-friend, Dr. Jennifer 'Jen' Allen, is Dr. Aaron Michaels's main assistant on his pharmaceutical firm Bellion's research program to cure the highly contagious, fatal infection Guinin. A convicted murderer, whom Thom arrested, is one of their special drug test subjects, but escapes. The convict and Jen are affected by radioactively altered DNA from an experimental reactor used on mosquitoes which transfer quinine. The convict soon mutates into a mosquito-like monster, which sucks its victims dry. By the time Thom and his junior murder brigade partner Charlie Morrison figure out what happens, Jen starts mutating herself.

Best movie of this year hands down!

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

A convicted killer gets exposed to an experimental serum that causes him to mutate into a lethal and predatory humanoid mosquito mutant that goes on a bloodthirsty rampage. Director Tibor Takacs keeps the entertainingly inane story moving along at a brisk place, stages the attack scenes with flair, delivers a few nice bits of gore, and, best of all, treats the gloriously ludicrous premise with jaw-dropping seriousness. Corin Nemec plays the rugged detective hero with admirable sincerity. The foxy Musetta Vander likewise does well as the infected Dr. Jennifer Allen. While the cheap and chintzy (not so) special CGI effects leave something to be desired, the funky guy-in-a-rubber-suit monster possess a certain gnarly old school practical appeal. Kudos are also in order for Emil Topuzov's slick cinematography and the rousing score by Joseph Conlan and Sophie Morizet. A fun little Grade B beast bash.

This was a very interesting movie because it was played out like a b-movie, it had the cover of a b-movie, heck, it even had the plot of a b-movie but as far as technicalities go, this seemed like an A-movie that had the bad luck of being labeled as a B-movie. This movie is essentially about a convict who has been unwillingly volunteered to be the test subject of a new serum to cure a deadly virus spread by mosquitoes, the problem is, as a result of his attempted escape, he becomes a bloodthirsty bug in the process. This movie had everything a good B/A-movie should have. It had great camera work, great lighting, it even had great special effects. The only downside to this movie was the acting, a major contribution, and some cheesy scares, but there were some very gory parts that were pretty intense.Lets do the bad parts first. The acting was not all that good; in fact, there were points where I would mock the person who was on screen and his or her performance. Musette Vander, who play Dr. Allen, does not do a good job emotionally charging her character, and when she throw a temper tantrum, it seems as though she was overreacting and at the same time a bit tired of her character or role. Corin Nemec, who plays Lt. Randall, does some justice to this film as far as acting is concerned. However, there are points where he can be a bit clueless even though he is supposed to know what is going on. There was a great performance by Patrick Dreikauss, who plays Det. Morrison. One person, who was only in the movie for a few minutes and managed to decline his acting abilities, was Matt Jordon, who played the convict and Mosquito Man. His performance was a bit laughable and he seemed way too eager to be in the role, he didn't concentrate on his character. The scary parts in this movie were neither abundance nor a deficit. As far as "jump out scares," there was one real scene where I jumped out of my couch, but other than that some of those scares you can see coming. They were too predictable just by the way the scene was set up. However, as far as gore is concerned, this movie strikes at a 8 or 9. Some scenes, after Mosquito Man attacks, seem like a slaughter with missing limbs, dismembered bodies, blood splatter and overall carnage. When Mosquito Man attacks somebody and shoves that proboscis of his down somebody's throat or into somebody's stomach, it can get a bit gritty and gory. The design of Mosquito Man was also pretty frightening, and obviously heavily influenced on Cronenberg's The Fly, but nonetheless, it was till pretty creep. It resembled a man, by means of walking and holding, but it also had the anatomy of an upright mosquito. As far as the technical aspects of this film are concerned, they were truly amazing. If I did not know what a B-movie looked like, I probably would have thought this was an A-movie. The lighting was surprisingly excellent, it didn't seem over saturated or too dimly lit. It had great portrait lighting as well as great night and stale lighting. The camera angles where so amazing, steady and incorporated some great pans and zooms. There where great establishing shots that reminded me of some 80s b-movie flicks. There were some great sweeping shots and quality of the picture was really great, and did not seem anywhere near B-movie quality. The special effects for the Mosquito Man were very obviously CG, but for a movie of this caliber, it was really good CG and motion effects.Overall, this was an average "B"- movie, with A-movie technicalities. The acting was average and at points it was really bad, but that's what you get when you enter this territory. The scares where not abundant, however, the gore and splatter effects were and it really shows. This is one of those B-movies that is a hidden gem or it could be a guilty pleasure. You'll probably end up passing it up on the DVD rack, but I recommend this movie to those who enjoy cult classics or B-movies. If you are one of those people who enjoy a high quality of horror movie, you'll be surprised how much reputation this movie might hold up. Either way, I enjoyed it and hopefully you'll see what I'm talking about when it comes to movie quality and not acting.

OK, I am consumed with Christa Campbell. I have read and reread this month's Playboy feature on her. OK, I mainly looked at the pictures. I even ran down to get Scars when it came out to see her one picture in it. She is a MySpace friend and I cannot wait until her new film is out on DVD next month and the 2001 Maniacs sequel comes out next year.I am so obsessed that i would watch this movie just to catch a glimpse at her. But, I stuck with it until the end because it was interesting. I do live in Florida, so I thought I might get a tip on how to kill mosquitoes. No, the bug zapper doesn't work in real life.I did get to see three things: One of the most ugly creatures I have ever seen in a horror movie - I mean I hate those things at actual size, why would anyone want to see one seven foot tall. Ugh! Two, they used buckets of blood in this film. There was some real carnage in the hospital scenes. You were totally unprepared as the prior scenes were relatively mild. And, three, Musetta Vander is hot. She was a siren in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but I didn't know here name. She has only been in two other pieces of crap that I have seen, so I didn't really notice her as I was retching. Not a great movie, but not a total waste either.

....at least... When I saw the previews for this movie, I was like, "You have GOT to be kidding me!" It was several months before i saw it was on TV and i decided to check it out to see how bad it really was.********Full summary and spoilers below ********OK, there's a widespread disease going on, and its spread by mosquitoes. So there's the all important pharmaceutical company that is trying to make a cure. How? By using radioactive blue goo, they put it in a glass case with infected mosquitoes, with the theory that it was cause their DNA to mutate and develop an anti-virus. Got it so far? Cause the female doctor, Dr. Allen(Muretta Vander) explains it in a few sentences but i had to think about it to get it.Well, enter a death row inmate, Ray (Austin Jordan) under the orders of her evil boss to be a guinea pig. The prisoner breaks out of his cuffs, and takes the Vander's assistant hostage. In an attempt to save her friend, Vander lets the prisoner into the lab, but he shoots the assistant anyway. Then a shoot out blows up the reactor that held the goo and mosquitoes. Blue goo gets everywhere, mostly on the prisoner, but a little bit gets on Allen's arm.Fast forward a bit, the prisoner escapes through the sewers and begins to mutate into a giant 'Mansquito" The two cops on the scene of the lab shootout, Morrison and Randall (Patrick Dreikass, Vander's BF and Corin Nemee) are on the move to capture the escaped prisoner. Detective Morrison takes Dr. Allen home and she has a few moments of examining her arm where the blue goo was. The next day, Dr Allen is picking up blood packs and sees some on her glove and before she can stop herself, licks it up. She stops and reflects for a moment, but is interrupted by her boss. Her drunk boss accuses Dr. Allen of wrecking the company and after she storms out, he becomes dinner. Randall takes Allen out to dinner and but doesn't notice a few quirky things. She orders her steak very rare, is constantly sniffing the flower in her drink, adds a ton of sugar to her coffee. On the way out, she smells something appealing, and we cut to a shot of mutant Ray hiding in the bushes.Obviously they didn't have an entomologist on staff, since male mosquitoes are the ones that love fruit and flowers, while the females suck blood.Mutant Ray continues his rampage as he goes through a shacktown. Meanwhile Dr Allen is consuming chocolate and sugar. Her sex drive increases too, and her detective boyfriend is all to eager to oblige. She scratches him and starts to suck his blood but fortunately the phone rings. She's appalled at herself and vomits once Randall leaves.Randall investigates the shacktown and meets up with the mutant Ray. Gun doesn't work, hitting him doesn't work, but guess what, a TASER scare him away. He then make the connection that the explosion altered Ray's DNA. Charlie of course doesn't believe him, and Randall goes to see Allen for advice. Allen meanwhile examines her blood under a scope and sees it mutating. She flips out a bit, but then sees Mutant Ray, who somehow got into the lab. She pulls back from him but as he gets closer she gets a whiff of him and for a moment is turned on, and then faints. Randall comes in, and finds Allen starting to change. He rushes her to the hospital while Mutant Ray follows. Cue the entrance of more snacks, I mean cops, and more carnage ensues as Mutant Ray fights his way in. SWAT team, security guards, even poor Charlie, is part of the carnage. Allen manages to grab her clothes and escape. Randall searches the hospital and comes upon the lone female security guard that managed to escape. He walks in on Mansquito hoarding the bloodbank, and fights a grenade at the nearby oxygen tanks, ('Hey, Mansquito!!!), causing a big explosion. Is it all over? Big explosions normally signal the end of horror movies. But Randall staggers up from the wreckage looking for Allen, and he rushes off to the lab. Meanwhile, Mansquito also rises. Allen is still in pain and is watching herself transform. She picks up a glass case of mosquitos, supposedly the ones with the cure; takes them to the roof and opens the case. She heads back to the lab and draws up a syringe of poison. Randall stops her from killing herself as Mansquito burts in. He proceeds to beat the crap out of Randall, when Allen lets out a loud alienlike scream. (Mosquitos scream?) That gets Mansquito's attention and she escapes out through the sewers, then attacks Mansquito with a pipe. Randall jumps on Mansquito and uses the taser again but is thrown off. . Allen has mosquito strength now, and fights him. He tries to fly away, but she grabs him. She yanks out a power cord and electrocutes both of them. Cut to Randall writing up to a report, and there's a news broadcast on about how the virus had seemingly disappeared. We hear in voice-over how he lose everything he cared about, but with every end there is a new beginning and we fade to black. Not too bad, but not the greatest. Not bad for a lazy afternoon or evening or if you're all alone and have nothing to do. Lot of plot holes, and a VERY lame ending but what can you expect from a movie with this name? Just knowing that only female mosquitos suck blood blows the whole concept of the movie. Funfor a laugh, or for you and your buddies having a bad horror movie fest. 5/10
