Great Film overall
The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
I thought this movie was okay. The whole story revolves around a straight guy who pretends he is gay in order to hook up with this girl by going out with the girl's gay best friend. The plot was pretty detailed, but in the end things just were not as exciting as expected. The acting wasn't that good either. Marc(Ryan Carnes) was probably the best actor in the movie. The movie is more of a romance and holds minimal comical figures (the straight guys ex-girlfriend is definitely one of them). There are some "hot" moments were some interesting things happen between a few guys. I don't want to give anything great away, but there are some really good scenes. Besides some reoccurring dullness, there are plenty of entertaining moments that will keep you entertained.
This is the kind of insipid superficial gay movie that gives the gay community a bad name. Real low class/low rate stuff. Awful writing and awful directing. If you like all the superficial and unrefined elements of a culture, then this is for you. If you are looking for something more sophisticated and that even attempts to approximate 'art', then look elsewhere. Real Insipid, superficial gay junk movie. Not worth the time or money. I can never understand how this kind of stuff can get made or where these writers or directors heads are when they think this stuff up. It is really the type of movie that has become the bane of existence of the gay community.
Some other person posted this is the worst gay film since "All over they guy," which struck me as a very bad point since "All over the guy" is well received and amongst netflix top rented 20 gay & lesbian film charts, and has remained a top rented for over 2 years. Yes, "Eating Out" is very amateur. Yes, it is a no budgeter, silly plot, and some of it is badly edited. But, ya know what? I enjoyed every minute of it. Part of the reason is I really love Ryan Carnes. I have liked him ever since he appeared on "Desperate Housewives." Ryan is a natural actor and physically a major turn on for me. And there were quite a few funny site gags as well. No, there is no message in this film, there is nothing very realistic in terms of how us gay dudes live, and the entire plot was beyond silly. But among all the low low budget straight to video gay themed comedies flooding the DVD market, this is one I really enjoyed. Yup,many will not agree, but I don't really care. To each their own, right? I liked "eating out."
I have a hard time understanding why gay male moviegoers would react so harshly to this film.My partner & I first saw "Eating Out" at the NYC LGBT Film Festival two years ago. We immediately watched it again with a friend who enjoyed it as much as we did. A year ago, we saw the movie during its commercial run with a group of 6 gay men, all of whom enjoyed it AND then we bought the video once it was released. Finally, we showed "Eating Out" to a close friend just this afternoon & he shared our delight with the movie.Anyone willing to overlook intermittently schlocky writing and awkward acting will find the story so sweet, the jokes so funny, the cast so appealing & sexy, the bodies so muscular & good looking, & one extended sex scene so erotic as to justify the time & money commitment. The full frontal nudity involving the two male leads is icing on the cake.Watch the movie & let your only intention be a desire to be entertained. Don't compare it to "The Citizen Kane". Let your inner gay child enjoy! Hopefully, you'll feel the way we do about "Eating Out".
