It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
I took one look at Betsy Drake and said to myself HE married HER? UGH!! And the thing only got worse after that.Betsy Drake plays a manipulative, obsessed, single woman who looks up and notices Cary Grant and immediately starts stalking him objective matrimony. She enlists her friend, her boss (a notorious womanizer) and Eddie Albert.Drake's "acting" and I use the term loosely - is atrocious. Cary Grant is his usual suave self - until the end of this garbage. And yes, you can imagine the ending without me telling you.Friends and neighbors - don't even bother. Unless you like torture. And fingernails on blackboards.
Cary Grant lifts this movie - as with almost everything he is in. He was an incredibly handsome man, and he knew just how to smile, talk and act to have all women swooning! I can feel it still, here in front of my computer, despite of the fact that the movie is 65 years old and Cary Grant long since gone from earth. As for the story, I find it quite silly. But of course it is a woman's fantasy. Who has not been in love with some dreamboat, but felt that it was no use, that one was not in the same league, that one would only be making oneself ridiculous if one showed one's true feelings..? But the idea has been there of course, to do the things that Anabel did: follow the man around, find out everything about him, try to get close to him, try to please him... but in reality one never dared. The girl in the movie dares, and she wins the Grand Prize through sheer determination and cheekiness. That the actress Betty Drake got Cary Grant in real life as well, despite of the fact that she was nowhere close to his league in either looks or fame, adds to it. Maybe one should have gone for it..? Too late now, anyway...
"nowlang" wins they prize for double-talk when posting in their review of this film:"I would like to explain my positive assessment of this movie and help newcomers form an opinion for themselves."One doesn't HELP someone form an opinion for themselves. By definition, it's something that must be done on ones own. This kind of movie does nothing but feed the outdated mindset that every girl has gotta get herself a MAN - by hook or by crook - or even by stalking.Thank god this kind of thinking has pretty much gone the way of the dodo.
I'm among millions who consider themselves Cary Grant fans, but I can't think of a single reason to recommend this movie.I don't understand the casting of Betsy Drake and it appears no one else did,if we're to judge from the small number of films in which she played afterwards. Most fans will agree that Katharine Hepburn was superb at chasing and catching Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby. Here the director or writers try to rehash the idea, but it fails miserably.I've read comments about how "creepy" Drake was,but I thought that was far too mild a description. Franchot Tone walked through this one as if he were hungover.A casting disaster is one thing. This film is a total disaster. This one doesn't deserve 10 lines of comments and I don't know why that's a requirement.Too bad this one was preserved when so many worthwhile films lie rotting in vaults.Unless you want to torture someone, give this one a wide berth.
