hyped garbage
All that we are seeing on the screen is happening with real people, real action sequences in the background, forcing the eye to watch as if we were there.
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
This is probably my first full watch of a Troma movie, and I thought the movie was pretty stupid. I understand they have a cult following, but so does the Insane Clown Possee. You either love it or leave it. From a entertainment-standpoint, though, I wasn't impressed, and I stopped and started the movie multiple times because it would get so stupid and boring. The music was ridiculously bad and obviously donated to the film. I like watching all the strange personalities that run around with the Troma people, but they wouldn't make me watch another Troma movie the same way John Waters had his "Dreamlanders."Overall, it's a very low-scoring film with me, probably around 3 stars since you do get a comedy sketch at the end with Matt Stone and Trey Parker in it.
TERROR FIRMER is, by far, the best of the Troma films. The editing (including Troma's trademark continuity gaffes) and pacing are excellent, the dark humor and gross-outs are relentless, and there is even some intellectual fodder for those brave enough to "theorize" about a Troma movie. The behind-the-scenes murder mystery theme is funny and surreal. The lead actors are also good and command a strong screen presence. But TERROR FIRMER is also great for having about as much male nudity as female nudity. I think this is because the film's writers appear to be making astute comments about the sometimes-confounding nature of sexual desire. This Troma production seems tailored to shock the jocks by pushing lots more than the usual T&A in their faces! The jokes and visual metaphors about penises fire out like bullets -- and the vulgar lines are akin to John Waters at his raunchy best. The only problem I have is with some of the DVD commentaries. There are three to choose from; the one from the actors is decent, but the one from the film's editors is disappointing. They make a film that out-shocks all others, is extremely violent and "weird," and is (in some ways) gayer than any Troma film I've seen -- yet they seem to be almost apologizing for it all, making sure the audience knows they are "straight," and coming off as far too "normal" for such a brilliantly twisted movie. What a buzz kill! Then again, maybe their fear of being (or seeming) gay might also speak for the film's subversive power.Still, the final result -- the movie itself -- is good and worth repeated viewings. Just don't let some of its creators ruin the mystique of their creation.
Terror Firmer is an exercise in bad taste; self-indulgent bad taste mind you. Don't get me wrong, I love the trash and exploitation films like John Waters'; yet at least in his bizarre mind he makes his movies innocent and genuine and behind them all is actually pure brilliancy in character and script. With Terror Firmer, director/producer/egotistic actor Lloyd Kaufman goes to prove that he can push the boundaries of filth to infinity; so far in fact that it becomes seemingly irritating and noticeably self loving. With hyperactive actors (example: Toddster) and an over written script Terror Firmer packs itself up with as many obscene and vile scenes as possible; a foetus being ripped out of its mothers belly, a man eating faeces from another's anus; a hermaphrodites scarred bits. It's just too much and it doesn't want you to not realise it. Terror Firmer is a two hour, self indulgent, egotistic pile of crap with an in your face "look how much of a disgusting and vile independent film I can be" attitude. Make a vulgar and repugnant film by all means, but never go too far and too cocky as Terror Firmer does.
What can really be said about a movie that deliberately and gleefully intends to push the barriers of taste right out the window? Therein lies the failure of "Terror Firmer," an over-the-top parody of the making of a low-budget movie crossed with a slasher flick. In its own hyperactive, slovenly way, it tries too hard, and simply doesn't have enough "meat" to merit its near-two-hour run time. The film is stained with gore, viscera, vomit, and is heinously overacted and overwritten, and a majority of the time confuses shock value (no matter how inane or black-humored) with comedy. A female slasher is on the loose, killing off the cast and crew of a low-budget independent film (director Lloyd Kaufman, founder of Troma, never skips an opportunity to inform us of the virtues of independent cinema)who is doing it, and more importantly, who cares? That being said, "Terror Firmer" does have an eerie charm that (for a while, at least) bangs on the 'ol funny bone with some consistency, though a little of this stuff goes a long way, and eventually you'll just want the movie to end.
