To me, this movie is perfection.
Good concept, poorly executed.
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
Someone is killing high school students in "Cutting Class". The movie begins with us finding out that a teenage boy who killed his father is being released from a mental institution, clearly the writers wanted us to suspect him from the start. We meet out main cast of characters next. Brad Pitt plays short tempered Dwight who is going out with Paula (Jill Schoelen). The boy just released from the institution is named Brian, and throughout the film he is written as the prime suspect along with the school principal and janitor. Some of the teachers are murdered as well as a few of Paula's friends, but the body count is actually pretty low in this. Eventually, Paula discovers who the killer is. Will she survive? ... A mistake I made with 'Cutting Class' is reading the back of the DVD. The identity of the killer is revealed in a picture on the back of the DVD case, so I wasn't all that shocked when it was revealed. We get a lot of classroom scenes and love triangle scenes which, at times, make 'Cutting Class' feel like more of a teen drama rather than a slasher film. Jill Schoelen, who was a pretty well known late-eighties scream queen, does a great job in the lead as always. It was interesting to see Brad Pitt in one of his early movies, he did a decent job given the material he had to work with. Roddy McDowell and Martin Mull had comedic roles, but didn't really make an impact on the movie at all. What stopped 'Cutting Class' from being a great horror/slasher film was the lack of scares and the lack of kills. It has a decent plot with the guy getting released from the asylum, but it never get's to the level of being an elite film. I however enjoyed 'Cutting Class' enough to recommend to horror fans.6/10
I'll start with the few pros. Brad Pitt. End of pros. He is THE only good actor in this movie, and even he couldn't save it from being awful. The special effects were average at best. The blood looked fake, and that's bad when you have a slasher movie to make. The mystery behind the killer is hidden at first when you believe it's the red herring. They actually did that well. But when they blatantly give you a piece of daunting evidence its the killer it's too ludicrous to believe so you believe the opposite. And I managed to discover who the killer was within moments of this idiotic discovery of the(SPOILER, Ring, End Spoiler)Cutting Class offers nothing new or even fresh to the slasher sub genre. EVERY death is bland and uninspired. Even the original deaths were too hokey to believe. I understand its a horror-comedy but even the comedy parts weren't funny. A failed attempt to kill the killer with sodium springs to mind. Please avoid this film. IT is one of the few films I ever rated below a 3. I wouldn't even catch it on TV.
When people talk about the greatest Brad Pitt films - Cutting Class rarely gets a mention, and I just can't understand why. Nah, I'm just kidding; but actually I was surprised to find that this film is nowhere near as bad as its reputation suggests. Sure, it's a long way from brilliant - but what do people seriously expect when going into an eighties slasher? Anyway...it has to be said that it's never really clear exactly what director Rospo Pallenberg is aiming for; there's not enough scares for a horror film, not enough (intentional) laughs for a comedy and nowhere near enough suspense for a thriller...but in spite of all this, the film somehow manages to succeed in being an entertaining mess. The film takes place at a high school and top student Paula Carson's father has gone away on a hunting trip. Around the same time, her boyfriend's former friend Brian Woods has been released from a mental hospital and his appearance has coincided with a string of murders at the school.Naturally the biggest talking point of this film is the lead performance from Brad Pitt. I'm sure that the man himself would rather forget that this film ever existed; but to his credit, he leads the film well and this performance does show some early promise. Besides that, I'd rather watch this than recent rubbish such as Oceans Eleven (and sequels). The other two leads are not so great; Jill Schoelen (best remembered for role in the 1987 classic The Stepfather) is awkward, while Donovan Leitch looks a bit ridiculous in his long black coat. The film tries to be something of a whodunit; but unfortunately forgets to add in any red herrings, which means that it's always more than a little obvious who the murderer is. The film does feature a few decent murder scenes that are fairly imaginative; though not particularly bloody. There's not a great deal of suspense in the film and it tends to rely a lot on the characters and situation; which is usually interesting enough to keep the film ticking over. It all boils down to a decent conclusion and we are treated to some interesting reasoning behind the murder's motives. All in all, Cutting Class is not great; but it's decent entertainment at least and is worth a look.
Cutting Class (1989) 1/2 (out of 4) Incredibly bad slasher film sat on the shelf for many years but finally got released after Brad Pitt became a huge star. I'm sure Pitt wasn't too thrilled with this but he's the only reason this film doesn't get a BOMB rating. Jill Schoelen and Pitt play a couple who find themselves trying to discover who is killing all of their classmates. Fingers point to a former friend who was just released from a mental house due to killing his father. This is a really bad film and there's no way around that fact but seeing someone like Pitt in a movie like this makes it somewhat entertaining. Pitt isn't too bad in the film but God knows no one will mistake this for Fight Club or something to that nature. The death scenes are all incredibly lame and the limited amount of nudity does nothing. Martin Mull plays the girl's father and his scenes are the strangest of the film as they come off as a spoof yet these scenes go against everything else going on in the movie. Roddy McDowall plays the perverted school principle.
