Good movie but grossly overrated
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Only on the IMDb can you find people trying to justify and/or tell you that perhaps one of the worst movies ever made is not bad, or it's terrific, a great ride. Listen, either this place is populated by complete morons or it's populated by ten-year-olds - those are the only two explanations when a pathetic waste of celluloid like this gets more than one star from anyone.I mean, has no one here actually seen a good movie? Is that it? Yes, I'm reviewing the "reviewers." I'm talking to you. Or do you take delight in being that idiot who does this just to mess with people. Yeah, I'm talking to you.How anyone read this script and said, "Yeah, gotta make the movie," is anyone's guess. I don't care what it cost, it's beyond inept. Poor Shirley Knight. Poor John Getz. The rest of the cast give career-ending performances, especially the fellow who plays George Axelrod (wink wink - we get it, really we do - it's not clever, but we get it). I have never seen worse acting in a film. And that includes Plan Nine. And the little girl? Did the screenwriter think he was doing Willy Wonka? I did love when she was in shock and mumbling, "It's all my fault." If this were the Zucker Brothers, someone would have slapped her across the face and said, "Yeah, you little creep, it is all your fault." The longest seventy-eight minutes in film history. And how about that final skyline shot that lasted forty seconds for no reason, before fading to the end titles? And then remove the six-minute main titles and you really have the longest seventy-two minute film ever made. Did this get released? Netflix it if you dare. Ooh, and a movie with nine characters trapped in a small elevator is shot in - wait for it - scope. It doesn't get worse than this, folks. Seriously. To the comedians here that liked it - you get less stars than I gave this film.
The synopsis of this movie caught my eye - A bomb in an elevator with 9 people trapped inside. I had no idea who was starring in it. And the first person I recognised was Devon Ratray aka Buzz from Home Alone. His parts in recent years was as a loser or a bad guy. And in a way, this was the exact opposite. I also recognised the comedian too. Thanks to IMDb, I see that the cast even included a multi-award nominated actress who plays an integral part in the plot of this claustrophobic thriller. Her comes the negatives though. Its classed as a thriller, but its not exactly thrilling. It was shown on the Horror Channel, there's nothing really horrifying about it. Apart from a bloody scenes. And the drama - well, I guess that's the best genre to put this in.The plot is rather thin and has one or two plot holes! Its not that bad a movie - I've seen much much worse, but definitely one that I won't need to see again for a while!
First of all, I am not saying this is one of the best suspense thriller I have seen. After reading so many negative reviews of the plot and how people reacts in the elevator, I just wanted to write a few words to say: what would you do in the elevator? I have to agree that after the first 30 minutes, it seems that there is inconsistency of the behavior of the characters for example the comedian's claustrophobia seems to have disappeared, or the guy who knocked up his colleague tries to be the real hero. True that these wouldn't make sense in the common life of what we are living, on the hand, a chicken would climb up the tree if its life is in real danger and a mother would risk losing her both arms trying to lift up a crashed car beneath which her only daughter is dying. You see, people would and will behave in a incredible way when they are in life threatening situations, the human brain have it's own ways of working, for instance physical pain will be temporarily suspended if the brain thinks there is a much more important task to be done. As in that logic, the comedian's claustrophobia would be nothing compared to the bomb and all his energy will suddenly be focused on survival. People will behave in a way they themselves would not have imagined, and the changes of the characters are very much a real-life under that circumstances. The little girl in among the cast in my opinion has been the high light of the whole film. She may not have pushed the emergency button on purpose of killing people, but we can see, like what the comedian said to her, Mr. Barden's blood is in her as not caring about other people's lives for his own benefit and pleasure, a quality that all "brilliant" and "successful" business men and women would have--"cold blood". For me,this is the core subject of the entire movie and it is well executed. All in all, good suspense, decent acting, reasonable yet dramatic plot, for me it has been very an enjoyable experience.
God... we're in 2013 (2011 the movie's release year). What the hell? The script was written in a night? And the movie was filmed in two nights? Thank God it was only 80mins lost out of my life. I was overtaken from the IMDb rating and decided to watch this stupid, without plot, without scenario movie. Watch out it may happen to you too. Sorry, 2/10. --- God... we're in 2013 (2011 the movie's release year). What the hell? The script was written in a night? And the movie was filmed in two nights?
