Absolutely Fantastic
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
1st watched 7/11/2014 – 3 out of 10(Dir-Ralph Brooke): Unimpressive horror movie about another mad doctor on a mostly un-inhabited island who makes a game out of chasing down and hunting all different kids of mammals and animals. This isn't the worst early 60's cheaply made horror film(this isn't saying much), but it could have been much better. The father from "Brady Bunch" – a young Robert Reed – plays one of the young adults who are taking a fun boat ride when they encounter an unknown island, and direct the drunk captain to put them ashore so they can see what's there(they are thinking treasure??). Instead they find there are folk that have put up camp there already and want them to stay the night. Wilton Graff plays the host and he seems kind, but it's obvious things are not kosher pretty early on. He introduces himself as a hunter, but we find out later that it's not just animals that he keeps as trophies. This very short movie(68 minutes) – does a good job of keeping the pace going and is interesting as a story, but there are too many un-intentionally comical scenes where the viewer just shakes his head about the responses of the characters to the situation. There are a lot of scenes put there so we can here the women scream from fright(woo hoo!!). The igor-type helpers of the doctor are another area that is unclear(how did they get there?? why do they follow his every command??). Some of the parts of the movie and the theme is pretty shocking for the early 60's and in some ways ahead of it's time in this area, but overall this is just a mediocre movie that is not a bad viewing, but there is nothing to make it that worthwhile.
This was an enjoyable retelling of 'The Most Dangerous Game'. I can't imagine this movie was meant for anything other than drive-ins, so it's got a low production quality and doesn't try to be anything it's not. Campy teenagers tell campy jokes until campy trouble strikes and concludes with campy action. Understand that you're not getting into a movie that will ever join the 1932 release in the Criterion collection, rather a cheesy old horror movie with a young Pa Brady trying to save the day. For fans of vintage camp, not for someone looking for the next undiscovered gem of classy cinema.Rating: 22/40
This is a nice and well made B-movie and surprisingly it works quite well. It's not one of those B-movies that are just plain boring. The story, a take on the classic Count Zaroff, is well told- although at times fairly gruesome for the early 60s (though my edition states 59 as year of origin). The acting is surprisingly competent and even the sets are fairly convincing. All in all it may not be a stroke of genius but it's and atmospheric and entertaining film. There are great performances, partivularly the diabolic and theatrical villain but the rest of the cast are really quite good. The interesting thing is that this film is sort of a teenage version of Count Zaroff and therefore actually pre dates the genre of teen horror flics. Absolutely watchable and entertaining.
"The Most Dangerous Game" must be the most adapted short story to film ever, honestly. Just off the top of my head, besides the versions that have the same title, there is also stuff like The Pest, The Condemned, Battle Royale, and George Carlin's skit about what to do with capital punishment inmates, and more. Thus, frankly, this movie does not have anything to offer. The story has been done before and since, the before accounts to the lack of originality and the since accounts to the more modern audience friendly representations, and also, really, how many of these films are really that interesting in the first place? However, it's fun in the way it's supposed to be. Four kids get trapped an island, hunted by a rich bloodthirsty tycoon or whatever, and the kids actually manage from time to time to surprise me by occasionally making a good decision or two. This movie is something of an early teen hacker horror movie, so it has the usual collection of dumb teens (well, not the usual collection, just a collection), and they run around just trying to survive, so it's cool. The only thing is that this movie does have a surprising amount of gore for the time. It's very little in terms of amount, but the two instances quite stand out. At one point, a man pulls a length of human skin from a refrigerator. At the end, the rich millionaire gets crucified by his own Igor-like servant. Those two scenes are pretty shocking, especially for the time.--PolarisDiB
