It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

This was a very cute movie. One of Dick Van Dyke's best. I always hoped for a sequel since they've tried to sequel or remake every other movie. I'd hoped that they would do the same with this one but it never happened. I've searched for a copy of this movie for 32 years. Every Christmas I'd look for this movie but no one ever knew what I was talking about. I'm glad to see that it is finally listed somewhere. If you haven't seen it you should. It's great. The networks should add it to their Christmas show lineup. This movie was very in character for Barbara Feldon. She seemed to have the same type of personality when she was doing the "Get Smart" show. Dick Van Dyke as a butler for a philanthropic woman worked well with his comic genius.

Videotapes first became popular in 1980, and Fitzwilly, one of my favorite films, had been made 13 years before. So naturally the arbitrary powers that be kept the video version off the shelves for over 20 years! But finally this lost Dick Van Dyke treasure is available, and we can only hope that its DVD version will not be another pan-and-scan nightmare like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was. Remember that both Chitty and Willy were shot in Panavison, meaning that only a widescreen format can do them justice on DVD.Yes, Van Dyke's Mary Poppins and Bye Bye Birdie are available in beautiful widescreen, but they really dropped the ball with Chitty. I was astounded when the DVD of it was finally released, and noticed that they had taken a film about a flying car yet - and reduced half the picture down to dismal pan-and-scan, which also reduced by 50% the feeling the viewer gets of flying. Please, Disney, re-release Chitty on widescreen DVD!(After all, the makers of Willy Wonka finally released a far superior version of their film in widescreen - after goofing up by first putting out a dismal "standard screen" dud.)Tech specs aside, as to the plot of Fitzwilly itself, the Robin Hood bunch does keep some money to maintain their households but funnels the rest of it through the old lady's hands into the hands of the poor. In the end, some rich businesses got stung a bit (but they were insured) and the lives of hundreds of poor folks were enriched. The only one who would gripe about something like that happening would be some other selfish rich businessman.Dick Van Dyke has for decades been one of the Top 5 comedians of all time, and Fitzwilly is one of his Top 5 movies. Need one say more? Only this - oh great creators of Fitzwilly, please release this movie soon on DVD and make it in WIDESCREEN !!!

Fitzwilly is one of the great caper-comedies from the 60's with a fine cast of outstanding character actors. You may not recognize names like John McGiver, John Fiedler, or Noam Pitlik; but, you probably know their faces. The great comedies of the 50's, 60's and 70's were filled by actors like these who, although not well known to the public, were well known amongst their peers. They give consistently good performances in a variety of roles. I knew Pitlik's name mostly from the credits of the "Barney Miller" tv series, but I've seen him on dozens of tv shows and movies from the 60's and 70's. It's these types of performers who are often missing from today's comedies. Too often, the film is built entirely around the lead actors, without gifted character actors to flesh out the scenes. It's these character ensembles that separate many of the classic comedies from the star vehicles of today.Dick Van Dyke is wonderful as the scheming, yet lovable Fitzwilly and he is matched by the beautiful and bright Barbara Feldon. I had a huge crush on her as a child, dating from her role as "99" on "Get Smart." She exudes warmth, charm, intelligence, and a sense of fun. Together, they make a great couple. Van Dyke's film career is often hit-or-miss, but, this is definitely a hit.As a side note to a previous review, this film was not produced by the Disney Studios. I assume the confusion is based on Van Dyke's many previous Disney movies. As far as morality goes, the people who were being hurt by the scams were mainly faceless corporations; an easy target for the general public to forgive. The Robin Hoods of the world are generally forgiven their larcenies as serving a greater good. Since it is established that Miss Vickie is very generous with her money, we can forgive the robbing-the-rich because it does, mostly, end up with the poor. Anyone who has ever grumbled about store prices is likely to forgive someone who "sticks it" to the companies who "rob" their customers. Yes, it's not that simple in the real world; but, this is a movie, after all.

I first watched this movie just before Christmas 1994 and have seen it at least once a month since. To me it is a movie that is simple and pleasant, not violent or extreme, with few if any underlying themes/agenda, there are too many movies that concentrate on the spectacular, which are fine if you wish to watch stunt or body doubles for 50% of the show. Dick Van Dyke's character "Fitzwillie" is a gangster, as are the rest of his team (in the best possible way), he only deceives those that can afford to loose ensuring that his "surrogate Mother" lives the life to which she is accustomed. For anyone who has not had the opportunity to watch this movie, rent it, get a nice bottle of wine, some snacks and a comfortable seat and enjoy the type of movie that unfortunately is not made any longer and as it is made around the Christmas period, there is of course that Seasonal good feeling! Enjoy!
