I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
Good movie but grossly overrated
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
I will admit that I have only seen the MST3k version of Soultaker, which is a great episode by the way, probably in my top 3. After viewing I was interested to see how the film was rated on IMDb. I was somewhat surprised to see it had an overall rating of 2 (at time of writing).I have read a few reviews including the rare and insightful comments from the Director and feel it has been unfairly represented on IMDb. Ultimately I don't think it warrants its position in the notorious Bottom 100.Although the episode was good, this is not typical MST3k garbage. Trying watching Space Mutiny, Werewolf or Future War, which have similar IMDb ratings, to illustrate my point. All of these examples would be very hard to swallow without the quips from Mike and the team.In defence of Soultaker: The concept at the time was probably quite original, the sound and editing is reasonably good and at times generates genuine suspense (not typical of the Bottom 100 films I have seen) and the acting is not hopeless (Vivian Schilling's performance probably most notable).I will not deny that there are some issues with execution though and plot inconsistencies. Taking into account all this, the budget and the fact that the MST3k version I have seen was probably edited to suit I think this is worthy of 6 out of 10.
Your movie would have been lost forever if not for MST3K. We may make fun of movies but it's with love I assure you. Take Manos: the Hands of Fate for example; it became a cult classic movie because of MST3K. Feel proud that your movie was 'good' enough to make it onto the show. I agree with you "The Shining" quote. That movie definitely deserved the MST3K treatment! Most viewers of this show know that the movies are chopped up to make them seem worse than they are. My fiancé' and I watch the uncut movies after the MST3K versions- so I know this to be true! You were only 23 so enjoy your 15 minutes of fame while you can. Don't quit making movies just because it didn't turn out the way you wanted.
Vivian Schilling's story is the only redeeming quality to this flawed film. From the posts listed on this site, I see that those Mystery Science Theatre 3000 goofballs used this as one of their targets. To be honest, it is an easy target. The "bull's eye" comes from poor production values and terrible casting. Although Vivian Schilling is no Meryl Streep and Gregg Thomsen is far from George Clooney, they do an adequate job. The miscast came with the Angels of Death.VIOLENCE: $$ (Not too much violence, unless you call soul-sucking a violent undertaking. Estevez does get thrown out the window - which also signifies the trajectory of his career - but there aren't any Rambo machine gun scenes or Michael Myers stabbings).NUDITY: $ (Vivian teases us while she undresses to take a bath, while her mother watches! I can only imagine what the Mystery Science guys have to say during that scene).STORY: $$$ (Although not strong, Schilling's strong storytelling abilities are degraded by the poor production values. She gives us an interesting plot but Michael Rissi's carefree direction ruin a decent script).ACTING: $ (Joe Estevez and Robert Z'Dar might just be the two absolute worst actors ever to grace cinema. Cardboard cutouts would have made for an upgrade over those two guys. Their work as the two Angels of Death, dig the six foot hole for Soultaker to rest in).
OK, I saw this film through Mystery Science Theater 3000, but I did see the movie, so I figured I would leave a comment on it. I just love once again how Joe gets stuck with the crummy roles while his brother and nephew's are just getting the Oscar winning roles left and right. Soultaker is technically what you would call the movie that was meant to be good. It seemed like the director and actors just took this movie extremely seriously and had very cheesy effects, a story that didn't make much sense, and not to mention pretty crummy acting abilities. This is one of my favorite MST3K episodes, simple because a lot of what they mention is what we are thinking throughout the film and I'll explain why in a moment.Natalie and Zach are a couple who broke up and are now trying to work things over. But since Zach is in upper lower class and Natalie is in middle class, it just ain't gonna work. But on the way home, they and Zach's friends get into a car accident and now the angel of death/Soultaker is after them to meet his quota of soultaking. But also it seems like he's had some kind of other life relationship with Natalie and just can't seem to move on. So now Natalie and Zach must race against the ever appearing five million times a minute clock to save their souls and lives.Well, I guess Zeppelin was wrong when he sang that there was a stairway to Heaven, I wonder if Black Sabbith was wrong too, lol. Basically there are a lot of plot holes in this movies, like no one can see the characters and they can't be killed, yet somehow they can still press buttons and open doors? The Angel of Death had a very strange face and was a bit distracting from the story itself. Soultaker was just a lousy film that was rushed and makes you just feel so bad for Joe, the under-appreciated Sheen/Estovez brother.2/10
