I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

1st Match: The Godwinns and The New Age Outlaws vs The Headbangers and The New Blackjacks, 4-on4 Elimination match. The problem with this is that there's no standout moment, the match just exists. The only note-worthy thing is that Road Dogg and Billy Gunn are a tag team now. Rating: 2.5/52nd Match: The Truth Commission vs DOA, 4-on-4 Elimination match. The same problem as the match before it, none of the guys are over, and the match just exists. Rating: 2.5/53rd Match: Team Canada vs Team USA, 4-on-4 Elimination match. Finally we get a match with some heat. Team Canada is of course over, and it's nice to see Marc Mero again. Blackman was just starting out, and gets eliminated first, which doesn't do anything for him. Goldust was also going through a heel turn, which would cultivate into "The Artist Formally Known as Goldust" phase. He leaves Vader to get destroyed, but everyone else did an alright job of keeping the match going. Rating: 3/54th Match: Kane vs Mankind, No DQ match. It isn't billed as one, but it makes more sense if I type it this way. This was Kane's first match, so it makes sense that they would have Foley take a beating to show how powerful he is. It's a glorified squash, but the promo that shows before the match goes a long way towards keeping me interested. Foley goes through the SAT, the steps, even thrown out of the ring, and keeps coming. It does a lot of good for both guys. Also, i hope you like red lights, it's one of Kane's "powers". Rating: 4/55th Match: The Nation of Domination vs Ken Shamrock, Ahmed Johnson, and the Road Warriors, 4-on-4 Elimination match. Man, Ahmed has had a really weird year. He started as a face, then got injured by Simmons, then came back as a heel who joined Simmons, then got injured again, and is now against Simmons. This sounds like an episode of "The Twilight Zone". Also the crowd hates Rock's guts. The match is better than the other tag matches before it, but only really serves to establish Rock as a heel. Rating: 3.5/56th Match: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Owen Hart, WWF Intercontinental Championship. Stop trying to recreate accidents that almost get people paralyzed. The match is just Owen getting squashed, which I find hilarious, but others might not. Good thing I don't care, I liked the match for what it was. Rating: 3.5/57th Match: Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels, WWF Championship. This is it, the most controversial match in wrestling history. I've heard about this match for over a decade, and have never seen it until now. I love the brawl they have before the match, it really feels like these guys hate each other. Shawn also desecrates the Canadian flag in hilarious heel fashion. The only problem the match has is that it didn't really have suspense to me, because I knew what the finish was for 10 years. That's not the match's fault, but still. Now onto whether it was a work or not. If it was a work, it's the best work in wrestling history, but I think it was legit. Everything just lines up too perfect for it to be fake, from Bret's reaction, the Vince and Shawn leaving quickly, the Ross being confused, to the PPV ending immediately. It feels too real to be fake to me. The match itself is good, the crowd's into it, both guys are into it, but the finish overshadows it. I'll give it a few extra points for the ending though. Rating: 4.5/5Final Rating: 7 out of 10. Love the main event, or hate it, it saved this show and company from mediocrity. The first half of the show is borderline trash, but the second half saves it.

The Headbangers were fun, but everyone else was languishing. This match isn't as bad as it could have been, but it's really below average for an opener.*3/4 out of 5The Truth Commission Vs The Disciples of ApocalypseChainz by The Interrogator (Sidewalk slam)The Jackal (Sidewalk Slam)Recon (Running clothesline)One of the twins (Bulldog)One of the twin (Sidewalk Slam)Sniper by Crush (Tilt-A-Whirl slam)Crush by The Interrogator (Sidewalk Slam)Sole Survivor: The Interrogator This was pretty bad. I've never seen so many sidewalk slams get three counts before. I didn't care about anybody in this match. The crowds may have digged D.O.A, but they don't hold up well. Kurgan (The Interrogator) was just another big man Vince fawned over before the experiment failed.* out of 5Team USA (Vader, Goldust, Marc Mero & Steve Blackman) Vs Team Canada (The British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart, Doug Furnas & Phil Lafon)Steve Blackman (Countout)Jim Neidhart by Vader (Big splash)Phil Lafon by Vader (Big splash)Marc Mero by Doug Furnas (roll-up)Goldust (countout)Doug Furnas by Vader (Big Splash)Vader by the British Bulldog (Bulldog nails Vader with the ring bell)Sole Survivor: The British BulldogThis match was kinda dull at times, but it did have enough moments to make it watchable for the most part. The anti-American crowd was fun to listen to as well. Overall, it was about average.** out of 5Mankind Vs Kane (W/PaulBearer)Kane wins with the tombstone. This was actually a decent brawl. Foley put over Kane in a huge way by bumping like a madman. Some of the bumps Foley took were sickening. It wasn't all one-sided either. Mankind got in some legitimate big-time offense to keep this match competitive. Overall, it did what it set out to do. Make Kane look like a monster. **1/2 out of 5The Nation of Domination (Farooq, Rocky Maivia, Kama Mustafa & D'Lo Brown) Vs The Legion of Doom, Ken Shamrock & Ahmed JohnsonOrder of EliminationHawk by Rocky Maivia (Rock Bottom)Farooq by Ahmed Johnson (Pearl River Plunge)Ahmed Johnson by Rocky Maivia (Farooq held Ahmed's legs so Rocky could pin him)Kama Mustafa by Animal (Roll-up)Animal by CountoutD'Lo Brown by Ken Shamrock (Ankle Lock)Rocky Maivia by Ken Shamrock (Ankle Lock)Sole survivor: Ken ShamrockThis was a fun match. It moved quickly and had a lot of action. You could tell The Rock was a burgeoning star as a heel and he looked like a star in this match. There were also other developments, such as the budding feud between The New Age Outlaws and LOD. Giving Shamrock the win here was smart. My only complaint is the never-ending feud between Ahmed and Farooq. It was really good at one point, but it was starting to get stale at this juncture.*** out of 5Intercontinental ChampionshipOwen Hart (C) Vs 'Stone Cold' Steve AustinAustin gets a loud mixed reaction. More cheers than boos, though. Austin certainly has his fans here. Owen Hart gets a big pop, of course. The fans completely turn on Austin after his entrance. Small "Break his neck" chants and cheers for a piledriver attempt from Owen. I'm Canadian...and we should have more class than that. Austin wins the title with a stunner. Austin stuns almost the entire Hart Foundation afterwards. The fans go nuts for that. Canadians are weird. Just being honest. This wasn't a very good match. WWE was being very cautious with Austin and rightfully so. Not too many big bumps at all. Can't really blame them for making the match short. *1/2 out of 5WWF ChampionshipBret Hart (C) Vs Shawn MichaelsMichaels completely desecrated the Canadian flag. Bret gets a huge ovation. If you don't know the result, I don't know where you've been, but I'll give it to you anyway. Michaels had the Sharpshooter on Bret. Bret didn't submit, but Vince demanded they ring the bell. It's known as the "Montreal Screwjob" Bret was leaving for WCW and Vince was paranoid Bret was taking the WWF title with him. Unbeknownst to Bret, Vince and Shawn planned the screwjob. A dismayed Bret, spit on Vince at ringside. There is much more, but you can read the rest online. The match is pretty good, but nowhere near what they were capable of. It's very disjointed due to all the circumstances. It's memorable, that's for sure.***1/2 out of 5This event is a must see, simply for all the controversy. As a whole, it's not bad, but the main reason to see this is the main event. 7/10

Before I get to the obvious match, let me just say that this was a time when the WWE's or F's (whatever) mid-card was terrible. I'm not going to go over the under card as they were only there to fill up time.Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Owen Hart - This match wasn't a good match, but is wasn't really supposed to be. It was just supposed to be Stone Cold re-establishing himself as the main mid-carder on his way to the top. All you had to do was see his beer belly to know that the pre-Summer Slam Steve Austin that Bret Hart said was the best wrestler in the world, was gone.Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels - This match lets us see how Americans can't see past their own existence and how Canadians hate them for it. For all those who say get over it. What would you do if you carried a company for the majority of the 90's & was responsible for elevating Stone Cold Steve Austin to mainevent status? Bret Hart gave his life and sacrificed his marriage for the WWF only to be screwed like that in his own country. Not only would I not have let it go, but I wouldn't have left Montreal without making good use of my knuckle dusters.Leave Bret Hart alone, he has every right to moan as long as he feels like it!

It is now May 2004. This event took place in November 1997, Six and a half years ago. Even now Vince McMahon (owner of WWE) is trying to smooth things over with Bret, but Mr Hart will only return on the proviso that he can 'get revenge on Shawn Michaels or Vince McMahon' after what happened at this event. Three words Bret: GET OVER IT. It happened, its in the past, LET IT GO.Every time I hear the term "The Montreal Screw-job" a shudder courses through my body. Bret Hart was leaving to go to WCW. He wanted the PPV match that people had payed good money to see, both in person & on Pay - Per - View from home to end in a massive brawl, and a double disqualification, then he wanted to ditch the WORLD Title the next night on TV and walk away. I'm sorry, but how would that have been better for anyone other than Bret himself, and his own fans? Neutrals will recall that titles in the WWF (as it was back then) were only ever surrendered due to injury, or other personal problems where the Wrestlers were left with no choice but to vacate their title. Even Shawn Michaels (who was fond of winning, but not very fond of losing his numerous titles) dropped the World Title to Stone-Cold Steve Austin at 'The Big One' Wrestlemania 14. What if he had refused? Austin winning his first World Title by being given it the next night on Raw wouldn't have had quite the same feel. Bret Hart's problem was that he couldn't handle not being the top dog anymore, and he wanted to spoil it for the fans by not doing the decent thing and letting Shawn win. A victory for Shawn after interference surely would have been a more acceptable way to end his tenure than what we got. Its just a pity that the owner was forced into doing something he didn't want to do by Bret's petulance.Shawn Michaels was put in a precarious position. Whether he knew what was going to happen is fiercely debated even to this day, but even if he did, what was he meant to do? Refuse his chance at the World Title to show loyalty to someone who had dragged their feud into the schoolyard by saying his parents must be ashamed of their son Shawn? Why should he? The only person who screwed Bret Hart was Bret Hart, the minute he thought he was bigger than the Man and the company he was working for.And on a side note, the only people that were really screwed that night were the fans, because controversial ending aside, the PPV was not memorable for anything else. The whole event had been built on the title match and it showed with a poor under-card. Normally any other Survivor Series (bar The woeful 6th Annual in 1992, which coincidently also had World Champion Bret Hart vs Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels for the World Title as the main event - which Bret won) would be recommendable, but not this one. Probably one of the hardest old events to get hold off, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.
