Terrible graphics and even worse acting from the child. Predictable horror made for an awful movie.

Being someone that has read the entire sandman series, this movie is absolute garbage! It is so terribly inaccurate in the portrayal of the sandman. This movie shouldn't have even been allowed to use that title. The producer of this movie should probably read the series before deciding they'd like to make a movie supposedly based upon it. And why does Haylie Duff have the sigil of death on her wrist? Non of it makes any sense, what so ever. I cant.

I'll be honest, I'm dying to binge season two of "Stranger Things" and I decided to watch this because the preview looked similar."The Sandman" tells the story of a young girl (the amazing Shae Smolik) who goes to live with her aunt (Haylie Duff) when her father dies. Little does her aunt know that the girl has an ability to, as she puts it, "make things happen." One of these things is that she manifests the vicious Sandman whenever she is threatened. It's not long before the body count starts climbing and the aunt wonders who or what it is exactly that she's brought into her home.Much like "Stranger Things," this movie is a genre stew made up of a variety of influences, from Stephen King to Steven Spielberg to James Cameron, and even "Stranger Things" itself. It's impossible to look at the little girl and not think of Eleven, who also had a psychic connection to a nasty monster. There's even a blatant "Twilight Zone" reference that provides one of the film's only laughs. However, the movie really does make these elements into a satisfying whole, constantly taking twists and turns so things never get predictable. The writers and director do a good job blending family drama, horror, and even action, into something that feels wholly unique. The cast is solid. Haylie Duff brings the heart as a woman struggling to overcome low expectations and become a good mother figure for the troubled girl. Tobin Bell plays a suspicious agent- type who may or may not be a villain. It was great to see Amanda Wyss, from Nightmare on Elm Street, again facing off against a dream-based creature. But the real standout remains Shae Smolik, who glides with ease between being a victim, a heartbroken innocent, and a vengeful threat.Unusual for Syfy, the production quality was good too. Fantastic cinematography keeps it looking like a notch above. There's a heavy reliance on practical FX… from the stunning creature design to a few gruesome kills (one memorable gory moment involves a spinal cord), which work very well. Even the CG, minimal as it was, was above par for this type of film.My only complaint would be that the movie feels a little rushed. The ending is too abrupt and would be better with an epilogue or something. It almost feels like they ran out of time or money.Still… if you're a child of the 80s like me, and want to see a modernized dark take on those old, great Amblin films… this one's for you. At least, until season two of "Stranger Things" starts. Leggo my eggo!

Following her brother's death, a photographer who takes in her abandoned niece finds that her claims of unwittingly creating a nightmarish creature called The Sandman is true when he begins killing those around her and must a way to stop its bloodthirsty rampage.Overall, this was quite the fun and enjoyable effort. Among its finer qualities is the fact that there's a lot of interest to be had with the central figure here who is a rather fun concept. The titular Sandman is quite an accomplished character with his backstory featuring her involvement in his conception and reality which makes for a really enjoyable time here, and along with the notion of being able to come to life in times of her feeling great stress or anger makes him an accomplished boogeyman. There's some fun to be had here with the way it gets involved with many of the scenes here, as the few scenes he's featured in makes for some really tense and thrilling moments from its first appearance in the convenience store, a fine series of events at her house as at first she conjures a trap to let others onto her powers as well as a later scene where it fully appears to take a victim away and the chase through the car graveyard which is a fine action piece. That it follows the scene with a strong and wholly enjoyable stalking scene in the mausoleum where the creature takes out the agents on her trail in the blackened corridors makes this even more fun by giving it a solid action scene right afterward. The rather fun dreams and flashbacks that occur here are almost as chilling, and given that this mostly leads to fun with the creature's rather strong appearance all done practically with a stellar costume to boot, this one generates a lot to like overall here. This one does have a few minor flaws here, most of which come from the fact that there's not a whole lot of action to come in the creatures' scenes. There's only one prolonged scene of the creature interacting for more than several seconds here as he generally seems to get conjured up and kill those around him in flash quick-cut scenes so it doesn't have much to do. Likewise, this one does tend to come off with little in the way of the creatures' motivations or actual conception as nothing is really given about what it's doing with her, why it chose her or even came into being so the little we get does help although it doesn't offer as much as it could've. Otherwise, there's not much to dislike here.Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Language.
