Simply A Masterpiece
A waste of 90 minutes of my life
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
If you can sit through THE BOHEMIAN GIRL without squirming, you're either better than I am at suffering the indignities of awful singing scenes or else you're a die-hard LAUREL AND HARDY fan and don't care whether the plot is insufferable or not.The gypsies here are the stereotyped kind that Hollywood and the theater invented, but this time their singing material is so bad you'll wish you could "fast forward" all the musical moments. And frankly, there are too many of them throughout the story.Rather than recount the plot, described in detail by others here, I'll just say that this is definitely not my favorite Laurel & Hardy film. In fact, I couldn't wait until the final vaguely amusing scene that takes place after the duo has been tortured. It provided the only real laugh in the whole story.Summing up: An awful mess of a film, barely watchable.
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are the most famous comedy duo in history, and deservedly so, so I am happy to see any of their films. Basically this film revolves around the world of the gypsies, and a band of them are camped outside the palace walls of Count Arnheim (William P. Carleton). Amongst the gypsies are pickpockets Stan and Ollie, and while they sneak around snatching purses and wallets, Mrs. Hardy (Mae Busch) and her new lover Devilshoof (Antonio Moreno) kidnap the Count's child daughter Arline (Darla Hood), before running off and leaving Ollie with "Uncle" Stan to raise her. Twelve years have passed, and adult Arline (Julie Bishop, or Jacqueline Wells) dreams of being a princess, still with no idea she is one, and she is captured as a gypsy by the Count's guard Captain Finn (James Finlayson). So Ollie and a drunken Stan (from syphoning wine into bottles) go to rescue her, and dropping her medallion is how she finds out her true heritage, and Ollie and Stan who raised her are saved, well, only after Ollie is stretched and Stan is squashed. Also starring Thelma Todd as Gypsy queen's daughter and Zeffie Tilbury as Gypsy queen, it should be mentioned Todd, a regular in Laurel and Hardy died soon after this film was completed. I think what put me off a little in this film was the ridiculous costumes for Laurel and Hardy, and the songs (being some sort of musical) are a little annoying, especially if they're ongoing. Filled with one or two likable slapstick moments and not too bad classic comedy, it isn't great, but it's a black and white film worth looking at. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were number 7 on The Comedians' Comedian. Okay!
Bohemian Girl, The (1936) *** (out of 4) Laurel and Hardy end up taking care of a six year old girl not knowing she's really a princess. This isn't the best L&H feature out there but there's enough smiles and laughs to make it worth viewing once. I doubt I'd ever watch this one again but the potato scene with Laurel is hilarious as is the wine drinking scene. The film really picks up towards the end. Thelma Todd's final film.Fixer-Uppers, The (1935) *** (out of 4) Laurel and Hardy are card salesmen who meet a woman who feels neglected by her husband. In order to make her husband jealous Hardy agrees to play the part of her lover but when the husband catches them he challenges Hardy to a duel. Several hysterical scenes are here including the kiss between the woman and Laurel and another wonderful segment involving a drunk who makes matters even worse.
This still is a perfectly enjoyable full length Laurel & Hardy movie that entertains 90% of its time but it yet at the same time is a slightly disappointing one as well, considering how much better with a few small changes it could had been. The story is incredibly weak and simple and is based on a Balfe opera, so the movie also features lots of signing. Luckily not too much, so it never gets distracting or anything like that. The movie lets the story tell the story, rather than its actors, which means that Laurel & Hardy basically get very little interesting to do. The movie is really lacking in some great comical sequences with the boys and the trademark slapstick humor. It's still present in the movie but very limited down, to about 2 or 3 really great comedy sequences. There is way too little happening in the movie its story to make this an interesting or totally fun movie to watch. The movie also relies heavily on basically every cliché that exist about gypsies, which makes the movie feel a bit simple and cheap at times. But the movie is far from a bore and actually a still perfectly enjoyable one. The boys make sure that the pace in the movie remains good and they time their antics and dialog well. It provides the movie with some good comical moments and a good fun feeling for the overall movie. The Laurel & Hardy regulars also make sure that the movie is fun. Mae Busch yet again plays Mrs. Hardy in a way only she can. James Finlayson also shows up toward the ending in small role. His presence however makes a lasting impression since it's such a fun one. Thelma Todd also shows up again, in her last movie role before her suspicious death. Her role is very limited down in this movie, so it unfortunately is not the most worthy imaginable last role for her. Ironicaly it was due to her controversial death that her role was later altered and cut down from the movie, to avoid associating of the film with her death. Not the best way to pay tribute to a great comedienne actress from the '20's and '30's in my opinion but they had their (commercial) reasons for it.It's just that the boys set their own standards so high with some of their previous movies that makes this movie a bit of a disappointing one. It's hard to rate one Laurel & Hardy picture without not having another and often much better and enjoyable one in mind. Having some critique on this movie doesn't mean that this is a bad one but just that it's not as good as their best works.7/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
