It's hard to comprehend that this movie was made. It's Forrest Gump meets Walk the Line meets The Parent Trap. Is that too much for one movie? Absolutely. But on top of that, it also tries to be appealing to Evangelical Christians. From the many 10/10 reviews on this board that mention this aspect, it's clear that somehow this worked. Apparently simply containing Christians that aren't complete buffoons is enough for that.Elvis fans have not responded in kind, which makes sense as this movie is emphatically *not* about Elvis. It's just that all the world building that was done is all based on Elvis' life and music, only obscured enough that there is no chance of any copyright infringement litigation. This is extremely distracting. As to the story: it's baffling in the complexity of its setup, and the complete lack of subsequent payoff. Twins are separated at birth. They never meet. While Drexel is a famous musician and the other, Ryan, is an amateur musician who becomes an impersonator of the famous one, we don't even see Ryan attend a show of Drexel's. In fact, we barely see Drexel at all.Ryan visits his birth mother in the hospital and sings one of Drexel's songs to her. He doesn't know it's his real mother. She doesn't realize he's there. There's no subsequent consequence to this extremely coincidental scene. Which happens right after he makes a delivery at the hospital, which happens to be where his ex- girlfriend works, so it's coincidence upon coincidence... of course he hooks up with her again, as we knew already he would, since she is the narrator of the entire film. Yes, the narrator is not a point of view character. Which *can* make for interesting storytelling, if you really invest in it. The movie doesn't. Ryan's adopted father, played by Ray Liotta, is a preacher. He wants Ryan to become a preacher also. There is some kind of conflict about this between the two of them... but no framing of this conflict. Ryan's simply in school to become a minister, and then drops out. This has no immediate consequences for the father's life... which it easily could have had. Why not, for example, make Ryan an assistant preacher in his father's church? And then he doesn't show up because he's got a performance? That's actual conflict. This is truly amateurish screen writing, in that they knew there had to be some kind of conflict, but didn't know how to create it. Yes Ray Liotta really wants his son to become a preacher. He says so many times. So you think that when Ryan drops out there's consequences? Nah. See, he already has a job lined up, because this shady garage owner likes his singing. Does the preacher break off contact with his rebellious son? Nah. He even goes to the son's shows. The message in the end: always be yourself. Unless you can be Elvis. Then always be Elvis*. There's nothing Christian about this, and there's nothing useful in it either. If we ever find ourselves the identical lost twin of a celebrity, we'd better hope the celebrity dies in a plane crash, so we can use our own creativity to continue their careers.I could go on... about the extremely uneven music, about the various ways in which characters age or not, about the totally out of the blue reference to the Six Day War, about Seth Green's hair and language, which do not belong together, about the two black characters that are both one-scene and very subservient, etc. It's a rare movie that is this messy. An absolute must see!*Sorry, I mean Drexel of course.

By now you know the story. The real Elvis had a twin brother who died at childbirth. This movie creates a hypothetical scenario wherein the twin lives but is adopted at birth. One boy goes on to become essentially Elvis (a fictional version of him) and the other goes on to become a preacher's son with a penchant for black music, and for the music of his long lost brother whom he doesn't even realize he is related to.The actors who played the couple who gave up one boy for adoption did a fine job of acting. I felt their pain. Ray Liotta was good too. A "personality" always plays themselves. An "actor" plays diverse roles. Liotta proved he could do that by veering way far from his "wise guy" persona.Ashley Judd was added presumably for star power, because her role either didn't require much, or she chose not to do much with it.As professional critics have noted, the lead actor (an Elvis impersonator in real life)lacked "heat." Ironically his character has wondered all his life why the other guy got all the fame and not him. Clearly the reason was because the other guy had confidence and generated sexual smoke. Our main character is way too nice and respectable to be a boogie-woogie icon. More significantly the actor did not convey a sense of desperation in being trapped on the wrong path, nor frustration in missing his train so to speak. This guy is not a professional actor, so I forgive him.The film needed a passionate lead. Liotta carried the torch, but our real lead dropped the ball. There was a scene where he turns down substantial money, but shows no signs of internal conflict about it. Even when his dad falls ill, we don't really see the agony we expect to see.I don't know what the heck was going on with the pro-Israel thing or the Jewish message. OK, the real Elvis was partially Jewish genealogically, but how close to you have to follow his life in this script, given that it was not officially about him? Throwing in stuff about war in Israel and the preacher's support was simply gratuitous and awkward.I'm o.k. with our lead not doing drugs or chasing women. Apparently the production company is Christian. That's fine, but I still needed to see more of a spiritual struggle between devotion to God and the darker forces represented by dance music, and a soulful battle by a dutiful son to please his father and himself simultaneously. This was not done successfully. But nice try. I enjoyed it anyways. The most unique aspect of this film was it's original music score. They used new, original Elvis-sounding songs rather than the same old tired cliché Elvis tunes. Regardless of whether this was for copyright reasons, I enjoyed the music and appreciated its' freshness.

I'd like to meet the snobby butt reviewers who dissed this flick. My wife and I were teary eyed a few different times during this movie. It was very entertaining from start to finish with very few slow parts. Now I'm in my 50's so my Pop lived through the Depression so maybe it hit home more for me. Leave a light on and Pop would swat my butt! Lil! And I grew up just fine. This film exceeded my expectations, the music was great, who gives a heck if some of the scenes were on a sound stage? The family angle and the other portrayals were pretty good. We both felt it was 90 minutes well spend on a good movie !! Screw the critics !!! ha heehaw

Sometimes it's refreshing to see a sweet movie that has some nice cinematography, good actors and no violence, for a change. Doesn't matter if it's faith based or not; it's relaxing and rewarding. We just have to lay our usual critical sense aside and enjoy the ride. This movie have not wasted money on excesses, it's all there on the screen, and for the budget it's really managed to capture the times nicely. This movie has a little bit of Elvis, the 50s, Jerry Lee Lewis, a bit of faith, nice cars, clothes and manners from times gone by. And, why not? It feels fun to see something that are sweet and in a way a little silly sometimes. That doesn't mean that it don't have real feelings and emotions, just that it's not pretending to be something it ain't. I saw this movie with an open mind, and I found the ride to be quite good.
