It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Nice animation for its time. An all-star cast of voice actors. It kinda drags on for a bit too long but its fine. I liked how humans werent cgi, that was different. Its about a penguin that can not sing but tap dance and his quest to find out whats been happening to their food.

happy feet came out in 2006 with a all star cast what a song and dance about an underachiever 1hr 48mins it was perfect even though its not a Xmas film there is plenty of ice and snow to make it a holiday film to love with the director of mad max miller kinds out puts his stamp on his cast on their voice from Robin Williams ... Ramon Elijah Wood ... Mumble l_i7Brittany Murphy ... Gloria (hugh Jackman ... Memphis (Nicole Kidman ... Norma Jean (Hugo Weaving ... Noah the Elder (voice) so we see little mumble tap his way around to a great soundtrack he is born Into the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce but he is despised because he sing crap he has no Heartsong. However, Mumble has an astute talent for something that none of the penguins had ever seen before: tap dancing. Though Mumble's mom, Norma Jean, thinks this little habit is cute, his dad, Memphis, says it "just ain't penguin." Besides, they both know that, without a Heartsong, Mumble may never find true love. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria, happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange "hippity- hop pity" ways. Mumble is just too different--especially for Noah the Elder, the stern leader of Emperor Land, who ultimately casts him out of the community. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly UN-Emperor-like penguins--the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon, the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with... even the humans when he gets captured because of his unique his captures find he is amazing so thee wonder what he is trying to tell them through his moves so over fishing in the Arctic will be called off due to his the animals instinctive nature for change this is a lovely film and the sequel

I watched this for the first time not too long ago as double feature with the Academy Award winning documentary "March of the Penguins". While the Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature "Happy Feet" was certainly the weaker of the two, it still has its pros. I will come to that later. Lets continue with an interesting snippet that "Happy Feet" is from the director and writer of the Mad Max movies starring Mel Gibson, although he got help from two lesser known actors as co-directors.The film starts right away in a funny manner with Mumble dancing in the egg and goes on by touching all family relationships of the central character, such as his mother, father, girlfriend, but also his interactions with penguin friends and humans. I especially liked the way humans are included. Always a difficult approach for animated movies, but they succeeded well here, much better than in Wall-E for example. The change from animation to live action was truly well done and I particularly liked the way when the perception is switched and we see and hear the transformation in speech, the way the humans perceive Mumble. This is one of the factors that makes the scene in the zoo truly sad. Add to that the illusions he has about his family of course. The central character, color-wise, looks like a young penguin from start to finish. This not only helps to distinguish him from the many other penguins in the film, but also adds lots of cuteness. One of my favorite scenes early on is when we see Mumble in music lessons (with a truly funny teacher) and all the other kids are laughing. All the others? No. His love interest is not, which is quite a major point implying the direction into which this film develops. The songs and choice of music is not exactly my cup of tea, but that's just personal perception and still I believe they fitted the scenes nicely most of the time. One scene that did not work too well in my opinion was the one where Mumble has the talented mini penguin sing for his girlfriend. The way she reacts angrily just feels over the top and not credible to the extent that you start to wonder if she really is the right girl for him. This mini penguin and his friends provide decent comic relief and keep the film from getting too serious for an animated movie. One of these more serious parts is Mumble's relationship to his dad. There's several scenes that focus on their interactions, just like near the end where his mother tells him to dance with his father (had to think of Luther Vandross) and also earlier when Mumble looks at his father thinking he is going to step up for him, but dad does the exact opposite. You could also add the egg-falling-down scene very early in the movie, although I did not perceive it as that significant as it tried to be.Aside from the mini-penguins, the film truly has quite a bit serious tension. Another almost tragic scene is when Mumble pushes away and insults his girl to protect her. As much as Mumble stood out thanks to his looks, I had occasionally difficulties to define who is who for the other penguins, especially when it came to his girl and mother, but that may work better on rewatch. Maybe it was just me. Also, this film makes you wonder what the makers' position towards religion and church exactly is. On several occasions you could find criticism which wasn't even subtle: the great deity, the penguin pope... Another funny thing, maybe the funniest, was a Dalai Lama penguin which accompanies the bunch in order to be freed from a noose around his head. This film is an exception to most animated movies as it has no real one main antagonist. Maybe the closest to it would be the penguin pope, but he doesn't really have that many scenes as most of the action takes place outside the village, obviously after Mumble's ban. So, there's many smaller enemies like leopard seals and skuas and humans of course too. Before I finish the review, I would like to add to my comment that the mini penguins are mostly there for comic relief that they also offer more than that. My favorite scene probably involving them was when they ask Mumble to come with them as they accept him despite him being different in opposition to the people in his village and even his family. All in all, it's a decent movie with a good message at the end and certainly worth a watch, especially if you like animated films.

I first saw this film with a staff member from my former care home when it came out in 2006 and we both enjoyed it. I watched this again today when I rented it after having already rented 'Happy Feet Two,' which is just as good with some parts better than others. The penguins, birds, leopard seal, elephant seals, killer whales and backgrounds were realistically modelled and rendered with true-to-life colours. Although the dark scene during 'Somebody To Love' was the least detailed part of the film, it was saved by the beautiful green lighting that resembled the Northern Lights, the lovely singing and the amazing choreography, particularly from Mumble. While he is unable to sing, he can still tap dance very well. He and Gloria were cute as children while Ramón and his Amigos were amusing. Besides 'Somebody To Love,' my favourite musical numbers by the penguins were 'Kiss/Let's Talk About Sex (which was changed to something else to make it more family friendly),' 'Boogie Wonderland,' 'If You Leave Me Now' and 'I Wish.' Further to Ramon and his amigos, it was funny when one of them called the leopard seal, "rubber butt" and also when they tried to run away from him in a way that played with the slow motion cliché. Another cliché that was played with was 'liar revealed' when Mumble was mouthing to Ramon's Spanish version of 'My Way' in order to impress Gloria. This film has some stunning and thrilling scenes such as Mumble jumping out of the water and saying, "Watcha waiting for?" (which made me think he initially sang Gwen Stefani's 'What You Waiting For) thus leading to him and the other penguins swimming underwater to the Beach Boy's wonderfully harmonious and underrated 'Do It Again;' the sliding scene with Mumble and the Amigos albeit causing an apparent avalanche; Mumble and the Amigos being flipped and nearly eaten by two killer whales; and the inclusion of live action elements, especially zoo visitors watching Mumble dancing. I loved Mumble's interpretation of them as aliens and his own language as 'plain penguin' as opposed to 'plain English' due to the visitors interpreting his plea to stop overfishing as squawks. The environmental message of not overfishing and polluting the Antarctic are valuable but Lovelace being choked by the six-pack ring may be distressing for very young children and certain parts of the film may be too daunting for them. They may also find the scene of Mumble being washed up on the beach and put in captivity confusing and I can actually remember a child asking his/her parents if Mumble was dead at the cinema. As an adult, I found the elephant seals confusing because I couldn't tell which was which and I saw that they had similar-sounding names in the end credits. I also found the ending rather abrupt and baby Erik, who has a larger role in the sequel, was hard to spot.In spite of the abrupt ending and certain parts being distressing, confusing and daunting for very young children, this film deserves an 8/10 for realistic visuals, beautiful musical numbers, impeccable choreography and a valuable environmental message.
