Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

It isnt a particularly thrilling heist movie, but it is a rather SILLY one because of the incredible true story. But that is exactly the reason why this movie can be an enjoyable watch. Man oh man, no writer would ever dare come up with such an unbelievable story. But it is honestly a true story. Two schmucks get away with the biggest cash heist in history. One is the guard of the vault, where the millions are stored. The other is his loudmouthed, imbecile friend.Dwayne Johnson plays the cop who uses common sense to figure out who really stole the money and was succesful at that. All the other cops and feds went after the mob, because the heist was too big to be believed to be pulled off by some amateurs. I didnt know that it was a true story when I started watching it. But at the end the real guy who got away with it, was interviewed. He is the only one who knows where the millions of stolen dollars are stashed and no one can touch him. Makes you wonder if the stashed money wasn't mob money to begin with. The mob never is gonna claim back their money from the police. But you could imagine that whoever owned those millions would go after the guard. But he lives a happy life without being dumped in concrete by the mob. Super weird story. Again if it werent true it would have been a bad story, but it is true. Go figure.Big actionmovie actors like Dwayne Johnson are cursed when they want to try and play in a movie that is a slowburner, because the fans want the same thing: action. They didnt get action, hence the lower than deserved ratings at imdb. All the reviews that are unfavorable mention the fact that it is slow and without action. But if you dont neccesarily need dumb action to enjoy a good movie then this movie is really ok. Especially since it is truly a true story. Once you keep that into the back of your mind while watching this, then it is an enjoyable movie which will make your jaw drop in disbelief. It is the ultimate dumb then dumber story, but the dumb guy WON. He WON. He got away with it !!! He got jail time, but he hasnt told anyone where the money is stashed. And now he is a free man again in real life. It gets even better: he co produced this movie, meaning he financed it himself. Can't help but thinking that he could have white washed his heist money with the making of this movie about that heist. Wouldn't that be hilarious?!

Empire State is based on a true story set during the 1980's, about a bank heist gone terribly wrong. This film is moreso predictable which is the case with films based on true events, however the story here is interesting enough to continue watching. Empire State had a limited release, which is shame since the film could have made decent profit. Althugh there was far greater potential the what came from the final product. The lead played by Liam Hemsworth is decent, but with a better lead it could have been a far greater film. Also Dwayne Johnson is criminally wasted in this movie as a detective. Whenever he appeared on screen, my interest level was raised significantly, but that was much too seldom for my liking. Dwayne has a gift when it comes to charisma, and the fact that he has such a small role here is incorrigible. He was far too good to have such a small part in this movie. Emma Roberts is barely in this movie, aside from a few pointless scenes. Overall the film could have fared better with better direction, but it was a decent watch.

Review: This movie seemed like an episode of American Dumbest Criminals. It's not as bad as Pain & Gain, but it's not that car off. While your watching the film, you have to remember that it's a true story and that the money has never been found. The real guy who worked in security depot says that he doesn't know where the money is, which I find unbelievable, and his excuse is that the money just disappeared while he was in jail. Yeah Right! Anyway, the film could have been so much better because of the great concept, but the director didn't do a good job. Personally, I can't believe that a depot that holds that amount of money, wasn't that secure, but i very much doubt that it is like that nowadays. If they had a bigger name playing the lead, it might have been much better, but it just seemed like an average heist movie, even though it's a true story.Round-Up: For a movie with the Rock starring in it, I can't believe that it didn't get the big Hollywood treatment like most of his movies. He does stand out from the rest of the actors, but he isn't in the movie that much. All of the other actors needed replacing with a better class of actors because you can see the difference with a movie like Pain & Gain. The script could have done with a rewrite and the name of the movie, along with the poster, doesn't really show what the movie is really about. Anyway, the bonus bits on the DVD shows an interview with the real person who worked at the depot so that gives you a clearer insight into what the hell must have been going through there heads at the time. But the question still remains, were is the money....Budget: $11million Worldwide Gross: N/AI recommend this movie to people who are I to the true stories about the biggest robbery in American history. 3/10

An Almost Movie that is Almost what it Attempts to be, but not quite. It has many Scenes that are Frustrating and the Characters range from Impossibly Irritating (Eddie) to somewhat Dull (Chris). The Director handles the Film in a way that could be called Mis-Handled. The Screenplay, even Worse and is all over the Place.Never Witty or Intriguing it moves along at a slightly more than Snail's Pace as it has some Clunky Combinations of Irritating Talk, Punctuated with some Violence. It never seems to Coalesce and by the End the whole Thing is a Ho-Hum Affair that betrays its True Life Subject Matter. This may have been the Greatest Heist in History but as a Film not so Great. Mediocre at Best, it is Dull at Times and is put together like a Crazy Woman's Quilt, resulting in a Craggy, Bland, but not Totally Worthless Film. It has some Moments but the Crime here is that it's all Rendered with a Complete lack of Style or Composition that makes this Type of Thing such a Perpetual, Intriguing Genre. The Heist Film. But it was an Opportunity that got Stolen Away in the Script Phase.
