Wow! Such a good movie.
If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
hyped garbage
Best movie of this year hands down!
Before I even start, let me tell you who I am. First and foremost, I am a 61 year old father of five and sucker for feel good movies that are squeaky clean. I love movies that hit me emotionally, have good character development, and likable characters. I also love movies that feature any level of character redemption, where bad people become good. When I leave a movie, I don't want to feel depressed. When all is said and done, I think there's a longing in each human heart for a happy ending. I actually believe that this longing is rooted in our, mostly unconscious, longing to know God and believe in His ability to make even the darkest circumstance work out in the end.Given all that criteria, this movie is a perfect ten for me. I have probably watched it ten times. Every time I watch it I have tears streaming down my face. I used to try to get all my kids and their friends to watch it and, for some reason, they usually are not as impressed as I am. It seems that the younger the viewer, the less likely they are to rate the movie highly. Most of my older adult friends love it. I feel pretty confident in saying that if you loved August Rush, you'll love this movie.
This excellent little family film is not just about winning--but about growing and achieving and learning something about yourself and other people while you're doing it; the central performance from Keke Palmer is a surprise, playing a feisty young woman who fights various pressures to achieve an almost impossible goal.Akeelah and The Bee is Rocky for the younger set, for sure, but without false heroics, and with solid performances from a close-knit supporting cast. As an older film fan, my only complaint is that most of the outcome is predictable after the first ten minutes--but so what? The performances and the strong story line told with grace and good humor carry the viewer along on a very nice ride.
I am Chinese who also study English a basically course in China, many years ago I already known from the Locak TV News report there is such a wonderful competition named "National Bee" which happened in US each year, but only got a few of pictures. Today there is the trailer played in Chinese national movie channel which name is "Akeelah and the Bee". I quickly search it online, and watch this movie immediately, what I found in this movie is deeply moved me, I love that black girls, no matter who is the winner in the end, I think almost every bee will do the same difficulties when they prepare the competition, I don't think there is any shortcut to success, but a good method is needed, I really don't want to say any more good for this movie, anyway it is a old movie 3 year ago. But what i thinking about is US, a new country, where the language is from another country-British, but make English as a beautiful art, to enjoy it, to make is more beautiful from children's, not a tool only. This make think about my country-China, which the language names Chinese, a longer history, a complex language system. But no one can dig it deeply, or make such a good competition on TV or stage, I feel shamed about now the Youngers cannot read Chinese clearly, and many many different local languages, and even someone can not write clearly their own native language. Anyway, I love this movie, maybe i wrote a lot of things that without this movie, but it really from my heart, sorry for my English is poor, hey hey
A National spelling bee, a girl from south Los Angeles, and a retired Professor of English. What does that make for? A feel good movie about a girl who overcomes and wins, despite the drawbacks. The film has a certain Disney-esquire feel to it, without the Disney brand. Nor does it afford the names Disney can afford. However, this film might jump-start the career of Keke Palmer. It is kind of typical in the sense that the underdog student comes out on top over the big winning student. Yet they all become friends? I suppose to be a valuable insight for people, however it is not realistic. The student-retired-professor bond isn't that spectacular, but isn't great either. And in real life not often do whole communities get behind one student at the expense of another.Overall, its sub-par. Acting is OK, but its needs a lot of work. "D+"
