It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

A group of people who get trapped in a Supermarket after a Tsunami hits the coast of Queensland, Australia. But they soon find out that they have more to worry about than being in a flooded grocery store, there's a 12 foot badly CG shark swimming around them, and it's hungry. It's a high concept movie for sure, a group of people stuck in a shop with a hungry shark, and as concepts go, it's a pretty bonkers one for sure. And like Snakes On A Plane, it more or less does what it says on the tin, it should have been called Sharks In A Shark, but I'm sure some suit in the studio would think that people wouldn't then take the film seriously. And we want to take a film with this concept seriously......So we have some relatively famous faces, and some culturally friendly (for the overseas market) characters standing on shelving trying to survive. Every now and again, someone who you haven't see in a film before tries to escape, it looks like they are going to make it, but guess what? Exactly.......It's like a mini version of The Poseidon Adventure, minus major character arcs and drama, but it has all the ingredients of a disaster movie. The cast are fine, but you can guess who will make it, and who will lose bodily parts, it's pretty perfunctory in that way.My advice is, watch it in 2D, because it's hilarious to see things approach the screen with the 3D as a primary marketing ploy, rather than story.Still fun though.

A year after losing his friend to a shark attack, "Josh" (Xavier Samuel) calls off his engagement to his friend's sister and decides to live alone in Australia for awhile. Meanwhile his ex-fiancé, "Tina" (Shari Vinson) manages to get on with her life and eventually gets another boyfriend. Then a year after the shark attack she comes back to Australia with her new boyfriend and while she is in the same shopping mall as Josh a huge tsunami puts most of it underwater. Even worse, two very large great white sharks with voracious appetites are also trapped in the same shopping mall with the few survivors who are left. Now rather than reveal any more of this movie and risk spoiling it for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this turned out to be a pretty good "shark movie" for the most part. Admittedly, the special effects were somewhat hit-or-miss and the ending was a bit unrealistic but other than that it was quite enjoyable. The acting was satisfactory and the suspense kept me interested from start to finish. Likewise, having several pretty actresses like Alice Parkinson (as "Naomi"), Phoebe Tonkin ("Jaimie"), Cariba Heine ("Heather") and the aforementioned Shari Vinson certainly didn't hurt either. In any case, while all too many movies of this type border on the ridiculous this particular film seems to be a rare exception to the rule and I have rated it accordingly. Above average.

Off the east coast of Australia, attractive lifeguard Xavier Samuel (as Josh) is making out with super-slender girlfriend Sharni Vinson (as Tina) when a shark attack occurs. The great white shark eats a couple of people. Later, after the TV news issues warnings about sharks gathering off shore, an even worse disaster hits the area. Look out, it's a tsunami! The aforementioned couple and a small group of others are trapped at the flooded "Oceania Food Mart" and its underground parking lot. They are joined by a couple of very hungry sharks...Just when you think they've run out of ideas, along comes a "sharks in the grocery store" movie. At least, this is something different. The characters are not too appealing, but director Kimble Rendall giving some of them a good send-off. Still, it does seem like an unnecessary number survive. The youthful cast members are all surprisingly fit, as is often the case in these films. The leading woman, Ms. Vinson represents the "skinny" body type well. Nicely constructed set direction and photography by Ross Emery are strengths.***** Bait (2012-09-05) Kimble Rendall ~ Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson, Alex Russell, Phoebe Tonkin

Australian's make great films. This is one the greatest in recent memory. My favourite Aussie flicks are Rogue, Triangle and The Reef, and now Bait 3D joins in too. The reason why I love Australian movies is because they are always character based and best of all they are interesting characters too, there's always playful banter between them or broken relationships. Bait throws a whole assortment of fun characters into a tightly packed, water filled feeding ground. A freak tsunami leaves a group of people trapped in a supermarket with a 12ft Great White Shark. Sounds over the top? Well actually the level of realism in this movie comes as a shock, because at first I thought this was a cheap straight to Blu-Ray but yet again the Australian's have proved that with strong set design, great casting and acting and nail biting tension scene you can create a realistic shark attack movie that never goes campy or unintentionally funny. Xavier Samuel and Sharni Vinson are outstanding, two great hero leads plus the rest of the cast are so exciting. There's an injured cop, two criminals, a down on his luck assistant, an argumentative couple, an ass-hole manager, old partners and shop workers, all these trapped in one room create rising tension, surprising laughs and plenty of development meaning you dig for the survival of this unlucky bunch. The 3D is brilliant, depth is apparent in every scene and the pop out effects are insane, from the actual shark jumping out at the screen as well as the supermarket shelves sprawling into the distance, this is how 3D should be and the opening beach scenes are jaw dropping! This is great fun, a must own and cannot be missed.
