Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

Young AdultEven though being predictable and of a familiar structure, there are few surprises among relationship and their intense take on the simplicity and the sensibility of livelihood is what keeps the feature not only alive but helps it pump harder and faster. The technical aspects like sound department could have been a lot better but amazing camera work and cinematography saves the day. The writing isn't strong and concrete as the writers think but still there is a lot to explore upon especially in its own plain even though rudimentary trajectory of it. Jason Reitman; the director, is the real game changer of the feature as his keen sense of knowledge on executing the anticipate vision is apt for the tone of the feature which is supported by fine editing. There is no doubt on performance level especially from Charlize Theron who is genuinely convincing and is supported by a great cast like Patton Oswalt and Patrick Wilson. The feature fortunately doesn't spend on milking away the character's perspective which would have easily been possible; considering the premise, but instead keeps it perfectly balanced and independent. Young Adult is a mature approach to a juvenile script whose witty depiction and the work that went behind the camera, ups the ante of it.

When an old flame announces the arrival of his first baby, an unsatisfied fiction writer returns to her hometown to stir things up ...Coming of age drama that pitches ambition against domesticity, community against individuality. The story opens with the arid nature of corporate, mass produced urban living, with the heroine regularly waking up face down on her bed after her nights of heavy drinking. She writes teen romance stories, with the main character's observations inspired by conversations the heroine overhears but ultimately reflecting her own selfish approach to life. So her arrival home is the opportunity to confront her demons and work something out. It's put together well, but left me lukewarm. Although the parts are performed with confidence, the characters feel a little like placeholders for the various themes. Most importantly the humour is ... mild, so it would take some deep characterisation to make this anything more than an average slice of life.Plenty of recent movies with women leading bad lives they need to escape, but they're all edgy: Nocturnal Animals, The Girl On The Train, Blue Jasmine. This one went for comedy, but just about amused me and no more, and in the end left me confused about the core values of the story. Is American life empty? Is personal independence good in itself?Overall: The pieces fit together, but no depth.

Depressed upon discovering that her former high school beau is happily married with an infant daughter, a young adult fiction writer sets out to win her old boyfriend back in this dark comedy from Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody. For a film marketed as a comedy, the laughs are few and far between, but that is not necessarily a bad thing as 'Young Aduilt' challenges one to think about whether what the authoress is going through is humorous, sad, pathetic, absurd or all of the above. Given how despicable her character is (wanting to tear apart a happy marriage; constantly dismissing an injured former classmate), Charlize Theron miraculously comes off as sympathetic the whole way through. It takes some suspension of disbelief to accept that she really does think that her plan will work, but Theron is always convincing in her quiet scenes and her growing sense of longing and regret is easy to relate to. What also works quite well is how Theron realises for the first time on her quest that the popularity of her book series is truly declining. Her world seems to be coming apart at the seams, and there is also a lot to like in how she uses her quest as fuel for penning her final novel at the same time. The book series is what she has used in order to delude herself into believing that she is still young, and with it on the decline, she finally has to grow up. 'Young Adult' is really a very apt title for the film in this regard. Patton Oswalt delivers has a solid supporting turn here too, but this is Theron's film the whole way as she renders her sour character with a nefarious plan utterly human.

For once Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody, director and writer, respectively, whose previous offerings were the great Juno and Up in the Air, miss the mark. The movie starts well, and has a similar bitter-sweet comedy-drama feel as Juno and Up in the Air. However, from a point it loses direction and ultimately just fizzles out.Charlize Theron gives a solid performance in the lead role. Her character's personality is a bit flaky and irrational, and sometimes hard to believe could possibly exist, and she does a great job in making the character believable. Good support from Patton Oswalt and Patrick Wilson.
