All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Some people rate movies as if all movies were made to win the best picture of the year. Apparently they don't think movies can be made just to be fun and entertaining. This is one of those movies. OK, there are goofs. OK the plot is pretty simple. But there are tons of great sight gags, fun special effects, great dialog, and a couple of "supper smart" horses that make this a really fun shows. I always like to read the reviews by people who "hated" the movie and rated it 1 or 2. Sad they can't just watch sit back and enjoy movies like other people. Bandidas is just a funny movie. If you haven't seen it, watch it.

Penélope Cruz and Salma Hayek co-star in this distaff version of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" entitled "Bandidas," co-starring Steve Zahn as a criminal scientist, Dwight Yoakam as the chief villain, and Sam Shepard as the mentor. The Norwegian pair Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg helmed this entertaining but contrived western comedy set below the border in Mexico. Our heroines hail from the haves and the have-nots. Cruz plays a feisty peasant gal named Maria Alvarez. She is a crack shot with a revolver and owns an incredibly smart horse. Indeed, she plays tic-tac-toe with her horse and he beats her once. Meanwhile Sara Sandoval comes from wealth and spent ten years aboard in Europe where she received the best education money could buy. She is pampered like a princess by her father. In other words, these diametrically opposed dames wind up reluctantly joining forces after their fathers are either murdered or wounded by the villain. Happily, both actresses generate strong chemistry as rebel leaders and this camaraderie distinguishes this trigger-happy horse opera.Basically, this outlaw oater pits two women–Maria and Sara--with their countrymen against the interests of the corrupt bankers. The Capitol Bank and Trust in New York has 60 days to acquire all lands required by the railroad so it can lay their line. The unscrupulous villains ride out to get these lands by fair or foul means. They show up on Pedro Alvarez's property and offer to buy him out at one peso. "Over my dead body," vows Alvarez. The evil Dwight Yoakam villain guns Pedro down in cold blood without a blink. Don Diego's daughter (Selma Hayek of "Desperado") rushes into his study not long afterward and finds him (Ismael 'East' Carlo of "Easer") sprawled dead on his back. Tyler Jackson (Dwight Yoakam of "Sling Blade") towers over Sara's doomed father without a trace of compassion. These two business men were completing the arrangements between their two companies. When Sara Sandoval refuses to believe that her father could have suffered from a heart attack, Jackson informs her that everything Don Diego owned now belongs to him, and Sara doesn't get so much as a peso. Jackson's henchmen endeavor to kill Sara, but she eludes them. She relies on her horse to kick one of the henchmen, and the horse sends this guy flying backwards as if he had been launched from a catapult. This sets the two heroines on a course to embrace each other. They collide with each other in Don Diego's bank with Maria planning to rob and Sara planning to recover the money for the people of Mexico. The first-third of the action concludes with our heroines bond. Our heroines solicit help from an American, Bill Buck (Sam Shepard of "Black Hawk Down"), and he teaches them how to shoot and rob banks. Eventually, the two women recruit a specialist, Quentin (Steve Zahn of "Sahara"), who initially works for Jackson. He quits Jackson's bunch after the heroines kidnap him and aligns himself with our heroines. He proves that Sara's father was poisoned using his scientific method. As a character named Quentin, Steve Zahn plays a bespectacled investigator who relies on the art and science of crime analysis. In fact, he emerges as somewhat of a Sherlock Holmes character. In the opening scene, he demonstrates his ability to deduce how a woman died in a room from a sneeze. The first bank robbery with Quentin is a mini-extravaganza of sorts. They survive the blast by taking refuge in the bank vault and the gunslingers surrounding them are blown down. Like the scene in "Butch Cassidy," our heroines blow the roof off a bank for their second robbery. A later bank robbery that takes place at night is really suspenseful, especially when Quentin literally dangles by a rope, and the outcome is amusing as Sara treads across a floor in ice blades on her feet and a staff to maintain her balance. She does this so she won't set off the alarms.Director Rønning and Sandberg never wear out their welcome with this nimble, lightweight, but cynical, 96-minute horse opera. The co-directors keep things moving along at a gallop, and the Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen screenplay never takes itself seriously except when somebody is murdered. Besson and Kamen together wrote the screenplays for the first three "Transporter" movies and "Kiss of the Dragon." This western compares favorably with the "Transporter" franchise because the action occurs at a breakneck pace. "Bandidas" is so lively that you cannot help enjoying it despite its occasion violence and its slimy villain. In a sense, this woman's western draws on the Spaghetti western with its picturesque settings and subject matter. Yoakam makes a genuinely slimy villain with his oily locks of hair hanging like parenthesis in his face. He dresses in a sinister black outfit with two revolvers worn backwards in his holsters. Jackson is the epitome of villainy. Yoakam represents the onerous railroad, and he has his own way of conducting business. Meaning, he has no qualms about committing murder. "Bandidas" boasts a terrific orchestral soundtrack by "La Femme Nikita" composer Eric Serra that contains a Morricone flavor. "Fifth Element" lenser Thierry Arbogast, who photographed this outdoor epic, makes everything look spectacularly scenic. Altogether, this western chick flick set in Mexico is entertaining with comedic action. Watch for Maria's horse playing tic-tac-toe with her near the beginning. The physical production looks good, too. The final showdown aboard a train looks like a "Matrix" version of the western. Knives and bullets sail and tumble through the air as the heroines and villains desperately duck them. Derivative as it is, "Bandidas" should satisfy western fans of any age.

Bandidas is a highly entertaining, fun ride. It takes place in Mexico, during the Mexican revolution in the 1800s. Two drop-dead gorgeous young women (played by Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek), decide to team-up and rob banks. This is quite a twist, from the usual macho western movie formula. The women commit robberies out of vengeance, in order to save land stolen from the Mexican people, by a villainous land baron. The violence in the film is ubiquitous, as it is in most westerns. However, the violent tone of the movie, is leavened with a jaunty, slap-stick humor. Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek, play the bank robbing duo more like a squabbling Laverne and Shirley, rather than Butch and Sundance. They have hilarious cat-fights with each other, as they try to learn to work together as a team. There's lots of incredible stunts throughout the film. Some are even performed by the horses, ridden by the characters. This is one of the few westerns I've seen, in which the steeds are as important to the plot, as the humans are. This factor highlights the overall lighted-hearted ambiance, running throughout the course of the film. The serious business of justice and revenge is pursued with gusto, by the beautiful, bank-robbing two-some. But along the way, the viewer is treated to lots of belly-laughs. Watching this film, is a great way to get your funny-bone tickled, while rooting for the good guys (in this case gals), to triumph over evil.

Believe this movie was trying to be cheeky, adventurous, and fun. It turned out to be cheap, pathetic, and hackneyed. Bandidas is one of the worst movies seen in memory. It has worthless music, sounding made in some back garage. It features spoken English in 19th century Mexico and very very unfunny dialog. Both actresses are sadly objectified mockishly. Not really sure what was going through the mind of all those involved. This movie is a dump. The sets are cheap, cheap, and more cheap. The plot is paper thin and the acting let off the leash in a bad way. Thankfully the fast-forward button was fully employed here for this free check-out from the library.
