Nice effects though.
It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Continuing my plan to watch every Eddie Murphy movie in order, I come to Meet Dave (2008)Plot In A Paragraph: A crew of miniature aliens operate a spaceship that has a human form. While trying to save their planet from destruction, the aliens encounter a variety of problems.Although I'm not 100% sure what was going on before I turned it off, Meet Dave is pretty much movie making by numbers. Murphy doing his big grin? check. A bathroom joke? check. lame romance? check. A bit of physical comedy? check. Woeful melodrama meant to tug at the heartstrings?? check. Feel-good ending?? check. Murphy sleepwalks Through this one. He doesn't even look like he is trying to hide it. And of courseMurphy playing dual roles. Minus the fat suit or heavy make up this time.I know I'm in the bad era of Murphy movies now, but I would say this is the worst Murphy I have watched!! Yes, worse than both Best Defence and Pluto Nash. I at least made it al the way through those movies.Meet Dave was a box office bomb only grossing $11 million at the domestic box office (Pluto Nash is the only Eddie Murphy movie to gross less) and it did not place in the Top 100 highest grossers of the year.
I know most people are hating on this movie, but I liked it! For me it was funny and well acted and very original. And while at parts I felt it was abit over board, like with the annoying guy who likes dancing and fashion and crap, who really sounds gay ( Pat Kilbane ). Most of this film were pure fun and I just found this to be a good movie. While not an award winner it was fun, original, and while the ending was lacking the rest of the film fixed that. Eddie Murphy, still has it. Even though he's slowing down and his movies are getting worse by the minute, this film still shows he ha s what it takes! The special effects are just excellent! Loved this. Great for everyone. It'll keep your children entertained for the meager 90 minutes this movie runs. Gotta say I liked it! B+
I don't know why this show was bashed so much. You can't go into every movie with the expectation that its going to win an Oscar or an Academy award. This is a fun movie that is great for the whole family. With ages 39y down to 4y and all ages in between it was enjoyed by all in our family.A rigid "alien" ship (in the form of Eddi Murphy) full of little people, comes to earth looking for an orb that missed it's target, our oceans. The orb is to collect earths ocean waters for the salt to save their own planet. But things change during their mission and they not only locate the orb but find more then they ever expected. So if your looking for a fun show for the whole family then give this a try. If your expecting an Academy award winner then you should probably pass. But then again...maybe this is just the show you need.
Meet Dave is nowhere near as atrocious as Norbit, but if you want an Eddie Murphy classic look no further than Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours and Trading Places. The premise in Meet Dave is stupid in a way but it was intriguing too, the film visually doesn't look too shabby, it starts off very well and Scott Caan and Elizabeth Banks give fun performances. Sadly I can't say the same for Murphy, who tries too hard and over-compensates embarrassingly. He is saddled with some of the weakest material of the film to be fair. The humour in general is very lame and lowbrow, the gags are mostly unimaginative and the script is unfunny and only got a raised eyebrow from me at one or two points. And while the concept is decent, how the story itself is executed isn't so much, it did feel very rushed and some scenes screamed of you've-seen-it-all-before kind of sensation you can get sometimes, while the direction is unfocused. Overall, liked the concept, disliked in general the film. 4/10 Bethany Cox
