In a boorish future, the government sponsors a popular, but bloody, cross-country race in which points are scored by mowing down pedestrians. Five teams, each comprised of a male and female, compete using cars equipped with deadly weapons. Highly Overrated But Still Good
Admirable film.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
I gave this an 8 because it does so well what it intends to do. It does not intend to be The Godfather or Braveheart. It is intends to be a great B-movie cult flick that is so silly of sorts that it is crazy genius. The beauty is in the casting, too, which carries the schlock. One of a kind and mandatory viewing for every movie buff. A timeless work of art. Btw: The 2050 follow-up is not close.
Wonderful B movie shot in the style and acting of cheap porn of that era. Then again some of this cast have history there. That said, this has some great humour and does play the 1984 political thread well. As for storyline think of this combined with Escape From New York another golden oldie. What's new in 2018, Death Race, Beyond Anarchy ???. They're so out of ideas they're digging up stories almost half a century old or copying comics. Seems to be a lack of original stories to tell.
Paul Bartel's "Death Race 2000" could very well be the Best B Film Ever.It has every exploitation feature necessary; everything a low-budget flick needs to be considered a classic of the genre: beautiful gals flashing a nifty amount of nudity/T&A, really fun violence, a fast-moving plot, zooming action & hilarious characters delivering their lines with great zest.Stallone's pre-"Rocky" Rocky is howl; Carridine plays it straight to perfection; B Queens Mary Woronov & Roberta Collins chew up the scenery & have a sexy blast; pre-Gopher on "Love Boat" & pre-Congressman Fred Grandy shows an unexpected side.And the three TV broadcasters, the legendary "Real" Don Steele, Joyce Jameson and little known-but-terrific Carle Bensen are a scream! It's tongue-in-cheek farce at its finest! Man, I love this movie!
Roger Corman is known for making ultra-low-budget, B-grade (or lower) motion pictures that have lots of violence and nudity. DEATH RACE 2000 is no different in that regard. Personally, I haven't seen any other Roger Corman pictures besides this one, but if this is any indication of what they're usually like than I'll just stop here. I know that this film was limited by its low budget, but it still failed to entertain me with what it did have. There was some attempt at social satire, but it was all surface and supported by some of the worst acting I've ever seen. David Carradine is given top billing (as he is the main character), but I thought that Sylvester Stallone's limited, one-note performance was more fun to watch. Overall, the film fails at social satire and only makes up for it a little bit with some decent racing sequences (considering the budget).
