Strong and Moving!
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
I've enjoyed watching this movie so much, I've seen it maybe FIFTY times (thank goodness for DVDs).BUT the science in it is EXECRABLE! And the more I watch it, the more annoying the "science facts" get. So I just watch it now for the action. And the casting of Sonya Walger as a femme fatale is kind of silly. There are only about 500 women in Hollywood WAY better-looking that her. It makes sense for a total nerd like Flynn to find her devastatingly attractive, but not everyone ELSE.
This movie seems to be trying to be a Indiana Jones style movie and while it works in some ways, the acting is so bad that by the end of it it was making me wince. It is not just the acting though but the premise seems to be a bit lame to me. Indiana Jones was a university professor who happens to be a part time adventurer, while Flynn is a perpetual student who is kicked out of university so that he can learn from real life, and ends up being employed by a mysterious library that collects mythical artifacts, and put into the position as 'The Librarian'.There is not really all that much to say about this movie with the exception that it does deliver on the action and adventure scenes, however I am surprised that experienced actors like Bob Newhart come across so bland and shallow. However I suspect that it has a lot to do with the script that they were working with. Even then this should not be an excuse since experienced actors should be able to have a lot of input into the script so that they can mould it to end up suiting the characters that they play – the actor is the essence of the character, so a good actor should be able to rework the script to be able to give that character essence.I have also noticed that this is a made for television movie, though that should not be an excuse for bad acting and bad directing. I have seen some pretty good television shows with some pretty good acting in them. Big Bang Theory is one of them, though I suspect actors in the TV series have a lot more to work with, and television movies probably have a lot more budget constraints. Anyway, if you can put up with the bad acting and the corny back story, and a like a good adventure movie, then give this one ago, otherwise leave it on the shelf with all of the other bad movies.
So I just saw this movie; only 7 years after it's release...As the last reviewer mentioned, it has a lot of typical Indiana Jones' "things" to it; riddles, conspiracies, ancient secret artifacts, and of course the same kind of humor, amongst other. All of which makes it a quite entertaining and enjoyable family movie. I must say that I'm a sucker for adventures like the ones the movies characters are going on. Probably brings me back to my childhood fantasies. You know: Being the brave and smart hero, saving the world, and getting the girl. All of these things make me forgive the extremely lousy fight scenes, all the fake studio-shot outdoor scenes, the unrealistic animations, and bad key-framing.But for me a movie is fortunately not just a science in making the viewer believing that the story is true. It is all about bringing me into a wonderful new adventure, where everything is possible, and only hindered by the movie makers fantasies. It is now 1.22 am, and I'm about to watch The Librarian 2. Hope I will enjoy jet another "cosy" reality flight.
You can not watch "The Librarian" without thinking about Indiana Jones, but this is NOT Indiana Jones. The best part is that they know it. This is a made for TV movie, produced by TNT. And it feels the part. At times it feels like a good adventure film and other times it feels like a guilty pleasure, fantasy/adventure show that is just so bad it's good and it makes you smile.Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) may come close to matching knowledge with Dr. Jones, but, unlike Indy, finds himself quite out of place in the wild and dealing with bad guys holding guns. However, rather than attempt to come up with a single character that could hope to rival the good doctor, the filmmakers cleverly decided to split him in two. The machete-wielding and villain-stomping is covered by Nicole No one (Sonya Walger). The two make a perfectly matched team who both get the chance to show off their strengths.I found the movie interesting and, most importantly, entertaining. I was never bored and I was pleasantly surprised. Not every movie has to be life-changing or groundbreaking, some are just fun. Judging from and A to an F, I give it a solid B. Maybe a B+. And I do enjoy a good B movie.
