I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
This movie was written, directed and stars Eugenio Derbez and it's quite simply brilliant.Instruction Not Included + the single bachelor and a baby seems like a set up for a slapstick comedy of errors. This movie is so far from that. It is a beautiful story of the love between a father and his daughter. It is poignant, deep and absolutely beautiful story. It is well made and emotionally powerful. It is also incredibly sweet. This movie deserved at least an Oscar nomination. I believe nobody from the Academy of Motion Pictures even watched this movie. They thought it was something else entirely. They were wrong this movie is brilliant and beautiful. Bravo Eugenio Derbez.Do yourself a favor and watch it on Netflix. Be ready for an experience that will leave a mark.
I saw the movie and enjoyed it a lot, even as it got darker in the end. It was enjoyable to see how Valentino cared for his daughter very much but in a weird way, lying about her mother just so she'll be happy, which is further complicated by her idea of him as a fearless man when he isn't actually like that (the scene where his daughter makes him unwittingly jump off a building from the 10th floor and is injured) and Julie coming and not being what she thought for so long, which made for a very invigorating plot. But the ending is very unsatisfying. They made such a big deal about who will raise the girl with trials and everything, and in the end, rather than choosing how she'll live her life, they just kill her off??? That ending is too much of a downer and negates so much of the plot. What's weirder is that in the ending scene where Maggie dies peacefully, Valentino and Julie watch the sunset as if they're a married couple when it's really a man and one of his 20 or so exes.Despite the ending, the premise of the movie and how it was played out was still very great. I'll give it a solid 8, all great except the end which deducts 2 points.
The Master Humorist. He's been doing humor for decades in Mexico. One has to only say "Que alguien me explique" to see how large and ubiquitous his influence is.Here his humor is interspersed throughout the entire movie. But, without giving away much, I'd point out 2 Classic Derbez moments. One is the shocker and burst-out-laughing moment during the "mommy-auditions". The other is when the school principal is dumbfounded to see the mom in school for the first time. His satirical comment along the lines of "...she's just getting back from paying the cab driver... something about not having enough change or something...". (You'll see the full meaning when you watch the movie.)Loreto Peralta as Maggie is incredible. Her performance was riveting. Perfect timing, perfect responses. I went looking for other performances/movies and found none! Impressive new-comer! As impressive were the gut-wrenching performances by both Derbez and Jessica Lindsey (the mom).Derbez's directorial debut is impressive. Well, not really. One could hardly expect any less since he's been doing much of everything in the TV world for a long time.He well deserves the accolades.BTW, Derbez's appearance in the comedy "Rob" (2012 CBS TV Series), where his short on-screen time overshadowed the main character, was an early forecast of the things to come.
A tad bit of a spoiler! We are Hispanics and when we saw Eugene Derbez as the main character we weren't expecting nothing great because he's a Hispanic comedian and we didn't think it was going to blend to good with an American movie, But boy did this movie prove us wrong. It has everything! Now its hard to get my husband to get emotional during a movie, not just any movie gets him to tear up, but this movie had him holding our daughter so tight by the end of it! This movie makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you value things but the best part of this movie is you carry it with you its one of those movies you cant stop thinking about shortly after watching it! Amazing movie definitely recommend it amazing job Eugene Derbez you have worked your way up incredibly!
