Purely Joyful Movie!
A Disappointing Continuation
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
Why is it so hard to understand that most succesfull films, especially comedic films or films build on a single character are usually just succesfull because of multiple things comming together in a certain moment in time. The original pink panther is completely build on sellers. If anyone else had played that role back then nobody would have remembered the thing and no sequals would have been made. It would have drowned in the sea of mediocracy made every year. The original cast just had the right chemistry and sellers gave the inspector a certain flair that went perfect with the time and the scripts.Martin doesn't do a bad job and the film has a couple of funny moments, but it is just a mediocre film, filler to keep the screens going in the movie theatre. If you never saw the originals you might enjoy it as an easy to watch but forgetable movie. But it certainly isn't a classic.Anyway, that's why sequals rarely come close to the original and remakes almost always disapoint. Recreating whatever made a movie so good is often just impossible. Especially when americans remake foreign movies/actors it hardly ever ends well. I wont be watching any more of the current wave of remakes, it's just not worth it.
Everybody is wrong about this movie. It's actually not a pink panther movie but instead a promotional lengthy music video for Beyoncé.. By coincidence some stars (and has-beens) appear to have cameos. So if Beyoncé's acting and singing doesn't make you puke in your soup then Martin's horrible and insulting mock French accent certainly will.
As with the best remakes out there, the 2006 version of 'The Pink Panther' never tries to copy or outdo the the original, instead presenting its own unique spin on things. The plot is entirely different with only the mysterious whereabouts of an enchanting pink ring in common and none of the supporting characters are the same as in the first two Blake Edwards 'Pink Panther' films. Kevin Kline's character is no doubt inspired by Herbert Lom from 'A Shot in the Dark', but Kline provides his own looks of indignation and astonishment to create a fresh new character. Steve Martin is surprisingly quite palatable as Inspector Clouseau (his good cop/bad cop double act is very funny) even if he does not possess the knack that Peter Sellers had for carrying on as if nothing happened after doing something clumsy. The remake also puts in Clouseau in centre focus, which is something that the original 1963 film of course failed to do. The 2006 version is not all good news though. There are several groan-inducing gags in the mix, ranging from Clouseau making fun of a Russian character's accent, to failing to learn to speak like an American, to some very out-of-place flatulence humour. As far as remakes go though, 'The Pink Panther' is a more accomplished effort than it is often given credit for. The supporting cast are top of the line too, ranging from Clive Owen in a hilarious parody of James Bond, to a not easily amused Jean Reno, placed under Clouseau's wing, to a delightfully over-the- top Jason Statham as the elusive ring's recently deceased owner.
This film is not as bad as Son of the Pink Panther, Trail of the Pink Panther or its own sequel even, but it is a pretty poor movie in my opinion. The music is great though, the title sequence is very entertaining and Emily Mortimer and Jean Reno are good in their roles. However, the story screams of predictability and is rushed, the gags are poorly timed mostly, the humour is often too in-your-face and lacked subtlety and the script is very weak. I liked the locations, but found the editing and direction sloppy. There is a difference in giving a good performance and trying too hard, unfortunately although I do like Steve Martin his over-eager but ridiculous performance belongs in the latter category. Kevin Kline is another good actor, but is saddled with poor dialogue and a lack of chemistry between Martin, while Beyonce is glamorous and sexy but limited as an actress. Overall, could have been worse but not really recommended. 4/10 Bethany Cox
