From my favorite movies..
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
Be Cool, starring John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and a bunch of other really great actors (V. Vaughn, Dwayne J., C the E, Harvey K., J. Woods, D. DeVito, D. Mazar, G. A. Williams) plus brilliant musical talent from the industry (C. Milian!, Andre 3000, Steven Tyler) is waaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaa-aaaa-aaaay better than Get Shorty it's not even close. Get Shorty is annoying compared to this sequel. I love Get Shorty, starring John Travolta, Rene Russo, Gene Hackman, and a bunch of other really great actors (D. DeVito Farina & Lindo with J. Gandolf/Tony T.!) but it ain't nearly as funny nor neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeearly as SEXY as Be Cool and not nearly as good or sweet. (I ain't looked, but I'm willing to bet plenty of ppl think not, welp, URRRRR WRRRRRROOOOOOONGGGGG!) Christina Milian is so, so hot with a beautiful singing voice and I love her. (dip it low, pick it up slow...) Am I gay, or is Christina Milian the hottest divinely-sculpted physical attractive human female specimen imaginable with her deeply gorgeous and purely sensual and beautiful face and the best eyes, or is Uma? It may be awhile 'til I review Ghosts of Girlfriends Past so let me just say Christina's skin is like sweet caramel milk chocolate and her body is like athletic, and super sweet O M goodness. I love me some Christina Milian her music is awesome. Aerosmith's and OutKast's music ain't bad either. (Crazy!, B.O.B. anybody?) John Travolta's perfect for Chili Palmer, the coolest and best shylock ever!Dear Uma Thurman, your butt is so hot, I love it. I love you, Uma. I really don't care about what's her face.
Whereas 'Get Shorty' focused on a mob debt collector turned motion picture producer, this flamboyant sequel has the former debt collector trying his hand at the music industry after become disillusioned with Hollywood. As a long-awaited sequel (released ten years after the original), 'Be Cool' opened to harsh criticism and mixed reviews, but watched more than ten years further down the track, it stacks up better than one might expect. The dialogue is extremely self-referential with John Travolta's protagonist hilariously lamenting the fact that Hollywood does so many sequels and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler announcing that he doesn't want to be "one of those singers who turns up in movies" for a quick money grab. 'Be Cool' also does a great job quoting much of 'Get Shorty''s iconic dialogue and there is an even amusing billboard for 'Mr. Lovejoy' - the original movie's unmade film-within. Not all of the self-aware elements work with the filmmakers trying a bit too hard to reference 'Pulp Fiction' given the reteaming of Travolta and Uma Thurman; the characters are also goofier this time round, which results in there never being much sense of danger in the air. In general though, the film is mostly good news. Not all of the ensemble cast are in top form (OutKast's André 3000 is especially irksome) but the ones who are in good form simply shine. Dwayne Johnson is particularly noteworthy as a bodyguard who is oblivious to his gay mannerisms and who Travolta keeps managing to disarm by telling him that he has movie star qualities.
This is a cold movie, a thing born of calculation and mechanisms in motion. It was not created by human hands but rather by large robotic engines that toil in an industrial area in southern California called Hollywood. Humanoid machines powered by chemical engines appear before an apparatus which captures light and motion and color. Standing outside the range of the camera's lens another humanoid machine issues commands to the humanoid machines standing within the camera's focus, based on this director's commands the actors attempt to comply. Alas the machines are clumsy and they have been programmed by inferior programmers, the code that propels these robots is both faulty and limited. In a factory this movie was manufactured, packaged and then distributed specifically for you to consume.
Be Cool is the 'largely unnecessary' sequel to 'Get Shorty' which didn't really leave room for one anyway. The movie opens with Chili Palmer (Travolta) and his friend Tommy Athens (James Woods) (who are both big in the music business), having lunch at a café. Randomly and without warning some black-eyed man pulls up in a car and shoots Tommy. The issue of his death soon blows over and then the so called 'main story' line progresses. The story seems to be about complications in the music business and the relationships between the characters. The movie follows many story lines including Chili and his friend Edie (Therman), a wanna be African American called Raji (Vaughn) and his chauffeur Elliot and a rich gangster called Sin who goes around bullying the other characters for money. The movie has a great cast with Travolta, Therman and Vaughn, but they don't really know what they are doing half the time. It seems as though the order of the movie wasn't thought out very well and scenes in the movie are very loosely stitched together on a weak plot line. A lot of the scenes are extremely monotonous also and just stall the movie. As for the script, its god awful and mainly consists of afro American lingo, unnecessary shouting and swearing and absolutely crappy one-liners. The movie doesn't really develop very well and the characters almost have and attitude of sarcasm and superficiality towards each other. At the end the happily ever after is somewhat unsatisfying and characters who were real pricks get their way.As a lover of film, this movie's existence insults me and this 2 hour monster of a production is not a good waste of quality time and will leave you thinking 'how did film this bad even reach my TV?'.
