I wanted to but couldn't!
From my favorite movies..
When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
This is definitely the worst movie I have ever seen. I don't understand how this movie has a 6+ IMDb rating. There is nothing about this movie that is good. The plot is virtually non-existent, the acting is positively awful....I could go on and on. There is endless footage of guys making pool shots, but that's it. I think the actors were hired because they are good at pool, not because they can act. It is one of those movies you get entertainment out of because it is just that bad. What is the point of these reviews having to be more than 10 lines? I think I have written an expressive review that captures my feelings about this movie and hopefully dissuades people from watching this movie.
This is one of those rare movies that grows on me after multiple viewings. Being an avid pool player, and holding movies like "The Hustler" (and to a lesser extent) "The Color of Money" as the all time pool classics, I didn't even pay mind to this movie until eight years after its release. And with that said, it keeps the tradition of pool hall hustling and gambling alive for Generation Xers and Yers.I admit upon first viewing there were too many distracting flaws that overwhelmed my ability to enjoy it. However, once I was able to look past its inconsistencies and get to the essence of the story and the characters, I found it to be an energetic and inspired work with some great (however small) performances by Rick Schroder, Chazz Palimenteri, Christopher Walken, and the late, great, Rod Steiger. There is no doubt that die hard pool aficionados will find the game sequences to be outlandish and exaggerated. But if I recall, so were many of the scenes in "The Hustler" and "The Color of Money". After all, this is an action movie glorifying pocket billiards. It's not an instructional video.Whether or not you really love the game of pool, the art of hustling, the risk of high stakes gambling, and the resulting camaraderie that hanging around a pool hall can bring, give this movie a try or two. I think you'll ultimately enjoy it.
I don't hate this movie as much as I hate Mars Callahan. He is an awful person for allowing such precious film to be wasted. It seems to have all gone wrong during the writing process. Mr. Callahan forgot the most important rule about writing: Rewriting. And rewriting. And rewriting. The trivia section says he wrote this in two weeks. No kidding. The whole thing looks like improvisation. Bad improvisation. We get it, "Mars". You like to play pool. And you're good at it. That's about all I got from this series of pictures masquerading as a movie. The result was about as effective as giving the audience the finger. What else can you expect from this? A bunch of bad jokes that shouldn't go beyond the locker room they're so lame. I didn't get anything from the characters, much less the "lead", the great Mars. He just came off as a douche. And Chazz Palminteri and Chris Walken do their best but two great actors aren't enough to save this Titanic mass of garbage from sinking. They might as well be bumping into walls for 120 minutes. It's too bad YouTube wasn't invented at the time this came out. Could've saved a lot of people a lot of time and energy and money...If you've read this and still decide to rent it, you deserve what happens to you.
It is a facsimile of a good movie, complete with loose camera shots, superslow and superfast footage, "cool" billiards footage, and some violence for good measure. But the acting isn't that great. It's almost good acting, but something is "off key" and kind of wooden. They are all predictable stock characters and the director didn't do much to carve out better personalities. The writing is okay, and Christopher Walken does the best job with breathing life into it. In the wrong hands (mouths?), the script just screams "clumsy drama".I think it was very badly edited with too many plots going on at once and too many shallowly-developed characters to follow. It was meant to be a character-driven film, but the film fails to bring that credibly to life. It just feels cluttered. Most of the money and time was spent on getting edgy-looking footage and predictable plot milestones. It felt rushed overall, and I just couldn't care enough about the characters. Backstory was also lacking, which is crucial to the story. It LOOKS cool, but looks alone won't save a formulaic plot with hollow stock characters and predictable relationships. It comes very close to being a good movie, but definitely misses. If I were in charge, I would prune the scraggly plots, broaden the soundtrack (James Brown's "The Boss" is great background, but not looped for 15 minutes!), focus more on a few characters, and develop their personalities more. I don't like having to suspend my disbelief too much either!
