Redundant and unnecessary.
Captivating movie !
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
22:30 into the movie and I am mind-blown that this movie has received such a high rating on IMDB. HOW?!??! The scripting is horrible, the acting is horrible, the soundtrack is horrible.... UGH. Someone gets stabbed in their hand for 5 seconds straight with absolutely NO BLOOD? Wtfe. This movie is definitely one of the worst movies I have ever seen, and that was a good 20 minutes ago. It is an insult to every horror movie before 1985 to say that this movie is good. An absolute insult.
"Phenomena" is an eighties Horror movie evolving around Jennifer, a girl that is sent to a private school in Switzerland and soon finds herself in the middle of a murder string, while finding out about her unusual connection to insects and thus becoming a threat to the murderer. What can I say.. this movie is ugly. I tried to eat lunch to it and trust me it wasn't a pleasure. While the first half remains rather slow and reminds of a modern time low budget movie, with heads flying off and body parts being cut, the second half really dives deep into pictures you don't want to see such as pools of dead bodies being eaten up by insects and maggots. I give the film credits for producing such an unpleasant atmosphere, especially in the second half. So why is my rating so low. Firtsly, many of the special effects are really cheaply produced and look like some splatter trash you can find all around. Secondly, and way more important, most of this movie is just utter bullshit. Almost every two minutes you arrive at a dead end where things don't add up or the plot just goes beyond every logic. With all due respect, but you can't call something a great production that makes logical mistakes a third grader would notice. So well, if you're into movies that are hard to bear and provide you with severe and shocking images, this might be a thing for you. If you're looking for a good movie in general though, keep looking.
"Phenomena" has Jennifer Connelly, (in her first film after working on Sergio Leone's 'Once Upon A Time In America'), as a teenager who arrives at a Swiss boarding school where the students are being stalked by a serial killer. She discovers she has special psychic powers, and uses them to pursue the killer. 'Phenomena' is Argento returning to 'Suspiria' and 'Inferno', yet infusing it with 'Giallo,' and coming up with one of his more unusual pieces. While the Swiss setting is devoid of any cultural markers (no hint of Hitchcock in use of locale), Argento presents one of his finest opening set-pieces. In a country setting a girl misses her bus and seeks refuge inside a mysterious home, there she collides with the film's faceless chained-up killer. Fleeing through a waterfall she is ultimately stabbed and decapitated by the killer. It's a vicious sequence from an unusually tranquil film that dabbles with the idea of nature having more power over us than we realise. Jennifer loves insects and is a somnambulist, and whilst sleepwalking witnesses a murder and therefore becomes a target of the film's faceless killer. While lost in the woods, she meets John and his monkey and connects with insects near and far. Like a wayward Gretel she is led into Argento's fairy-tale forest by a glowing insect; Argento cuts to an insect's POV, splitting the frame into segments, showcasing his obsession with the eye, sight and sightlessness. There may be no logical connection between the film's killings and Jennifer's gift, but that does not detract from the fact that this is one very unique film. 'Phenomena' was released in the United States in an edited version under the title of 'Creepers', continuing Argento's lack of any meaningful success in the United States since 'Suspiria'.
I've seen quite a few films by horror master Dario Argento, but this one is really something else. Don't bother looking for logics anywhere, but just try to let the audiovisual madness wash over you in a way you've never seen before. Although, perhaps(!), this is one of those 'It's not for everyone'-deals.A great plus is the beautiful and very enthusiastic, young Jennifer Connelly playing the lead here, what a great screen presence. Strangely, my favorites after her, are actually a lot of insects and a rather gracious monkey. The story is rather simple, with the 'usual' stretches, and contrived complications at the end, but (among other things) the theme with the insects and Jennifer's connection to them, is brilliantly brought to life by both Argento and the special effects department (Sergio Stivaletti did the most important work, as I understand it).Of course, we need to thank Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Goblin and some others, too, for a terrific soundtrack, that justs bursts out at the most unexpected moments. And, finally, Switzerland offers a beautiful backdrop, of which Argento takes full advantage. Glad to have finally seen this, I could use an Argento boost after the disappointing 'Il cartaio'.A big 8 out o 10.
