It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
This was one of the best rom-coms I've had the pleasure to watch. It was equal parts romantic and equal parts funny. Debra Messing was fabulous as the leading lady, Kat Ellis, who hires a male escort, Nick Mercer, for her sister's wedding. In the beginning, she played the nervous wreck very convincingly. Over time, as she started getting more comfortable with her date, she opened up and settled in. I really enjoyed her performance. Dermot Mulroney is incredible as the eye candy. It is quite evident that he's a very handsome man, but he portrayed the layers to his character's personality very well. He played the responsible man when required, he became a confidante to people he barely knew, and he was able to calm Kat every time she got too overwhelmed. The chemistry between the lead characters was absolutely perfect. They seemed very comfortable with each other and the ease, with which they portrayed their feelings for each other, was commendable. The story had its twists and turns and it was interesting throughout. The supporting characters, especially Jack Davenport, were also really good. The wedding was a nice backdrop to the movie and the scenic landscape of England was picturesque. The movie was on the shorter side and the background music also really brought everything together. I usually find it difficult to concentrate while watching a romantic movie, but I did not face that problem with this one. I watched this with rapt attention and did not move my eyes from the screen once. This movie was funny, heart-warming and overall, a lovely experience. Recommended for lovers of the romantic comedy genre.
I felt like I was watching cousins kiss. It was awkward, and poor acting even though both actors are good and steady actors. It wasn't believable and the premise was shaky at best ( male escort, Love dynamic). Amy Adams was the bright star in this movie. Her vapid portrayal of a sister was spot on and even charming. Don't buy or rent this, it is on tv enough if your curious.
In an attempt to adhere to its genre and ensure happy endings all around, the movie reaches a thoroughly contrived and unsatisfying conclusion. There is no way, if you found out your sister had been having an affair with your partner of 7 years and fiancé and that was the reason he had left you that you would stay at her wedding or comfort her the next day while she is crying because she told her husband to be the truth and he ditched her. I am pretty sure the sane thing in that situation would be to ditch the wedding and never speak to her again. Similarly, there is no way that if you just found out the woman you are about to marry has been sleeping with your best friend and best man, that you would run off and then 2 seconds later, return and proceed to marry this person. This movie should have ended with the wedding being called off, and an X number of years later scene where the sister bumps into Messings' character and they reconcile or something. And then maybe the sister attends Messings wedding to the escort guy and meets someone new. Or brings an escort of her own because her ex fiancé will be there and then they eventually reconcile. There is no conceivable way that after finding out about the sister's betrayal, that the audience would want an immediate happy ending for this person, as in her sister and husband to be forgive her almost instantly. It is utterly ludicrous and reduces the entire movie to a joke. Once the imbecile fiancé started running back to the church to marry his cheating fiancé, I turned off the movie straight away because I will not give the featherbrained writers of this garbage the satisfaction of watching such a pathetic conclusion to a movie.
I really can't believe the low rating on this movie. I understand that it's not movie gold or that it's predictable in mostly all parts of the movie but I loved the spunk and humor displayed as well as the deeper more serious parts of the movie. I can watch this movie any time it comes on TV without getting bored with it. You can't rate this as an Oscar movie or to some standard as Titanic or Atonement....both AMAZING love stories, however, this love story is just as interesting as previously stated. I don't always want to CRY to see a romantic movie. Laughter can be there too. So for romantic comedy, this movie is great and is sweet to watch with friends or relatives. I watch it with my mother and sisters all the time.Grab some popcorn and enjoy, Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney are great together and he's not bad to look at either. ;)
