I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
I have liked this film since I first saw it back in the 70s when I seem to recall it was much dismissed. I felt there was something different about it. Maybe not as clinically professional as some films and more concerned with the action than the actors. There also seemed to be unusually seedy aspect to the goings on. Later, of course, I discovered Italian exploitation and gialli in particular. This is the territory De Palma is working in even if the references to Hitchcock are undeniable. Interestingly enough I recall Hitchcock being asked if the violence in Frenzy was really necessary and he said that continental films had much more sex and violence and if he had been allowed to he would have made his films more like that. So, De Palma does get away with it and in some style. The story races along with a pretty Margot Kidder central at first, before we get tabloid type flashes as to the past evidence of conjoined twins and the whole thing gets very creepy. The use of split screens is exciting, indeed De Palma seems to use anything at his disposal, including the great score, to give us that thrilling experience with just a little feeling of dread.
Blood Sisters is a jarring who-what-why dunnit that's very much of its time. Whether it works for contemporary audiences ... well, I'm not so sure. The film starts by introducing Margot Kidder as a French Canadian actress/model and 'star' of a dubious TV game show built around voyeurism. As opening's go, it has its own flavour of disturbing, but it does cleverly mirror exactly the theme of the movie in a less than a minute: if you were witness to something private, would you do 'the right thing'?After an interesting premise, there's a slow and laboured build-up to a one-night stand, a menacing ex-husband, a secret twin and an inevitable - and very schlocky - murder. For me, the movie only briefly comes to life in the middle, where we have local beat reporter Jennifer Salt (the only halfway believable presence in the movie) witnessing the crime from across the street. When the police refuse to take her seriously, she sets out to investigate on her own, sometimes accompanied by her hilariously critical mother.Blood Sisters does its 'moments' well - there's intermittent tension, gore, black comedy and frustration, but otherwise it seems to lope along fairly immaturely. My biggest gripe - purely as a modern viewer - is in the film's extremely outdated ideas about mental health and disability. It's not so much about 'investigating' anything as going straight for the shock factor.I could forgive that if there were was something more endearing about this movie. I did like the overall feel and mood of the movie, down to the jerky editing and its rather obvious plot twists, but the acting is too hammy to be anything other than distracting. The ending is a masterpiece of short-change: not so much who-dunnit as huh-dunnit ... Yep, it left me stumped.I'd probably watch this movie again but not because it's good. It's an underwhelming 5/10 for me.
There's a certain extent of how much influence can one director draw from his icon, and Brian De Palma seems to stretch that extent to its very limits with "Sisters". This, along with "Dressed to Kill" are the American film maker's most Hitchcok-ian films, and a double feature screening is much suggested for a complete experience. Perhaps lacking the later films sexual emphasis (but of course not lacking sexual themes entirely-typically for De Palma) this film borderlines horror exploitation, but only in the best of ways. The visual style is top notch, as split screen narratives serve the suspense in an excellent way and drive the story forward keeping a fast pace, saving on screen time. However, as usually commented on De Palma's work, one can truly argue that this stylization is utilized to cover up the lack of a strong story. Talking about the story, it borrows (and that is a very weak word...) elements from classic Hitchcock films, notably Rear Window. There is an abundance of clichés, which, although performed perfectly, are still, nevertheless clichés. To be honest, once you've seen psycho, this movie and its "sister feature" (no pun intended), Dressed to Kill, lose a lot of what appreciation they could have earned from the viewer. With that being said, "Sisters" is a very entertaining movie, mainly because of its visual style and tricks, which will satisfy fans of the director but disappoint viewers looking for an original story or plot.
I admit that I dread giving this only a 6/10 as this is by no means a bad movie, I actually quite enjoyed it. Obviously if you have seen Psycho or a movie using a similar theme you will be able to figure out the truth behind Danielle and her twin sister Dominique before the twist or mystery revelation. I figured it out early and for my liking way too soon. Still the movie remained interesting. The characters were certainly well played and thought out. I was impressed by the split-screen sequences, something you don't see that often mostly when people telephone but in this it was different actions and made more interesting. Also the flashbacks in black and white which looked like a documentary were done really well. Weak points for me were the really fake blood on the victims plus how the story itself was executed wasn't that interesting. However I don't know how else they should have done it. The role of the detective was in my opinion not really a plus to the movie. The real creep for me was the doctor.
