Reviews
good back-story, and good acting
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
Synopsis: A young man returns home from military school and finds his mother getting remarried to a new man, the young man suspects that there is something not right about this new man.Review: This is a watchable thriller remake. Great performances, and there is also some unique great camerawork here from time to time. The majority of this movie is a straight up thriller, there are a few elements of creepiness, example the scene where the stepfather murders the old lady (that scene was cold due to there being no film score at all for that scene) and frankly that scene was unwatchable, it is actually a very upsetting scene, i think because the lady was old and couldn't really defend herself or even be able to attempt to.The Stepfather is an unpredictable thriller that is never boring, what more can i say - if you like thrillers watch or re-watch this. I recommend skipping the original because that version is unwatchable, and watch this remake instead.
PROS: I liked the storyline a lot. For a movie like this you'd expect to see a lot of plot holes, but there weren't many. I enjoyed how seamless the story ran together. There wasn't any scene that didn't support the overall purpose of the film. To add on to that, the movie was filled with paranoia. I genuinely didn't expect to be as startled as I was when watching this. The director knew when to kick up the intensity and when to dial it down. That refined quality was nice to experience both as a watcher and as a critic.CONS: The movie falls flat when the movie becomes basic. It's hard to recognize something as a con if it isn't bad, but I also have to realize that it isn't a pro. Some things like that are acting. There were many scenes where the actors really were their character and were very realistic, but there were times where I felt that they were just saying their lines. I was so ticked off at this because every time I started to get into the film the actors just said a line that pulled me right back out. This is the same with the ending. Cliché indeed, but overall just not impactful. This is the ending you'd expect, but it wasn't the ending the film needed.www.chorror.com
Returning home from military school, a teen discovers his mom's new boyfriend will go to extreme lengths to keep a psychotic image of the perfect family together, and that he and his family are in big trouble when he fears that he's going on another rampage. This here turned out to be quite the bland and unimpressive thriller. Most of the problems here stem from the fact that this whole film is based on set-up rather than horror actions, which just drags this one out to ludicrous lengths in order to sell the overall storyline. Since there's a large portion of time spent on the family used to him while he not only has to adjust to life back home again but also to her new man as well, which takes forever to get going in the first half the film really seems quite bland and overall a struggle. Once it gets to the introduction of the alternate identity and his past there's a rather big stumbling block in how badly this stretches out his secret from them by making his instability so obvious with the different secrets and explosive outbursts attempting to hold everything back from getting out is a lot of work needed trying to build something that doesn't really need as much to accomplish this rather simplistic turn. There's nothing here that warrants stretching out the investigation to the point it gets to here where it has him coming up with something that legitimately should've exposed him only to have it shot down unnecessarily on the most utterly flimsy points possible which feels quite lame and clearly screams being there to pad out the running time here when this one should've just let it out with the actual realization of his attitude and truth for everything which is quite a big struggle to understand what's going on. This here really holds back the slasher elements down to the point where instead the thriller aspect here is kept up to such a dominant angle that there's very little of the film that holds it's interest at all which keeps this one so dragged-out holds this down quite readily. Capped off with a series of lame, utterly bloodless and unnaturally tame series of kills and a lack of sex-appeal despite plenty of opportunity featuring this intention which really lowers this one even further, these here keep this down to the point of not really making the positives mean anything. The few positives here really stem from the film's final half which is when this one gets going with the stalking and battling him off. There's some fun with the final clue needed to fully piece the puzzle together and leading into the big chase and stalking around the house up into the attic which is admittedly creepy and gets enough action and energy going that it comes off quite nicely even with the clichéd resolution. As well, though it takes way too long to unfold it features a strong outline of how he gets found out, as the different methods built up to get him out are quite good in principle that gives this a little extra. Still, the other flaws here hold this one back considerably.Rated PG-13: Violence, Language and themes of child violence.
I don't understand, as to why this movie has such low ratings! I read here that its a remake, well I haven't seen the original movie and now I'm starting to feel that maybe that is why I liked it a lot! The storyline is great, so is the acting, though Penn's character and his girlfriend's were both kind of used as show-pieces, as in, they were put in the movie to add some naked-spice. I mean, it was like the two of them could never be together and wear clothes at the same time! Other than that point-less skin-exposure, the movie was great and had quite a few grasping moments! In a nutshell, the movie is totally worth watching!
